General / Ns 3.0 Thoughts

- Combat: I love it. I usually go Damage 1 - Shotty - HMG - Armor 1 - Armor 2 - HA - Resupply, and I almost always end with the most kills. However, jetpacks in combat are horrifyingly unbalanced, as the marines just fly past you and blow the hell out of your hive. Die, repeat. Though all the reserved slot holders being able to vote maps means every game is combat, it's beginning to piss me off.

 - NS 3.0:

1) Skulks are way too weak. I went through a game with 6 deaths and about 40 kills because they're so easy to kill. Most of em couldn't even get close.

2) Electricity is WAY overpowered. I could put a TFac in Engine Room on Tanith and it'd launch a bolt of lightning across the map and up an onos' ass in Feedwater hive.

3) Stomp was "fixed" by making it only 1 second. However, Flayra actually managed to skate around the whole fact that the reason it's overpowered is that a stomp is longer then most hallways.

4) Hand grenades are neat, but overpowered. A lot. They're like handheld siege cannons. Just whip 'em at an OC and it gets blown halfway to hell.

5) I've almost never seen an alien win. In co_ or ns_.
Iv'e played combat quite a bit alright, but like yourself Bob I am absolutly sick of it. Every map all the time combat (not just on LM). Flayra has said that the NS team will be concentrating on NS classic much more the combat for the moment which i'm overjoyed to hear.
I eventually removed peoples right to execute votemap as it was CO, CO, CO, Ns for 1 min(votmap the  comes into play), CO, CO, CO. Fair nuff it's new, it's enjoyable for a change* and I play it but.. call me old fashioned i'm an NS classic man. Also Combat is MUCH more attractive to nubs as it's simpler to comprehend and has a much more straight forward goal. Thus as soon as the nubs discover votemap your going to be playing quite a lot.

1)I dissagree, Skulks are far from weak. Cloaking + Focus = V unhappy marines(or the famed xeno runs). IMO they are only really useful at the start of the game when marines are faily light armour.

2)Yeh elecy is way overpowered for skulks & Lerks. Not so much fades and Onos. I have many a time sat comfortably in between a wall and a tf and smashed it up without being shocked to death.

3)Stomp... I like and dislike the whole stomp thing. Idealy (in my mind) it should knock marines back or down rather then stun them. It IS the only thing that keeps Onos alive imo. How many times have we seen a 1 hive Onos attempt to take down 2 or 3 heavies, it doesn't happen tbh, Onos goes in without Stomp does sweet F.A and either is running away after 2 seconds

4)Yeh they are a bit powerful alright but I think they should have the power of a grenade from a gren launcher. Also Marines really need them to clear out OC's and such. Ideal with less power.

5)Iv'e seen Aliens win lots. Although I know what you mean about the JP rushes it's VERY annoying when you know they are going to lose, next thing JP's zip by and it's game over. Also in the earlier versions Gorges used to web EVERYTHING and game over for marines. Gorges were subsiquently removed from the game after this.

erm... mine came from my second name with a 'y' thrown in and a load of letters cut off the end. Iv'e had it for close enough 5 years of online gaming. I went through this transitional phase of calling myself just_Pete but reverted back to my old sig as no one knew who I was.

Nothing really interesting  ^^ I was born a LaYkE and i'll die a LaYkE.

Thats fair nuff.

However I find this the single most annoying thing in a game ::

Marines and Aliens start with say 6 v 6... half way through the game marines start to kick ass, Alien team begins to see players drop. Your left with 6 v 3 game is pretty much over (even though it's half way though). I personally would hate to have to switch to the alien team simply because people got annoyed that it wasn't going their way and dropped. It ruins my excellent (throughly enjoyable) teamplay game to join a team that doesn't . The way I see it is after a certain point in game there is no point in switching as it only means that the marines can finish there game rather then it ending prematurly.

On that point I respect the server rules and if asked to switch I will. I just think after a certain point in the game it's not worth your while.

yeh I think you have to define the amount of FPS you want to use.

e.g record test.dem 30. Just to note i'm not sure if thats the 100% correct command for getting the FPS up. When you go to record your demo to Bitmaps using viewdemo you need to specify the amount FPS. Most people use 30 and then get a batch converter to change them to Jpeg, stitch it together using adobe premier or MS movie maker and speed up the timeline (to get rid of any laggyness).

I see several comms lately using the 'bonsaibase' strategy, namely building a TF, electrifying it, and then building everything around that one TF to avoid skulks chewing the base up while the marines are out. I'm wondering what others think of this idea. I don't particularly mind it when it's used just to protect a few really important things. Say, the IPs. The problem I have with it is when everything gets crammed into one teeeeeeeny space and I end up having to duck jump over half the base just to get to the armory, only to get telefragged because the comm built another IP right next to said armory.

When I comm, I usually tend to build things far apart -- especially the armory away from the IPs -- because I know how aggravating it can be negotiating and defending a base that's designed to fit in a closet. I rely on a turret or two (mostly for the 'sentry firing' warning) and maybe a single base guard for base defense and don't mess with any tricky electrified TF defending everything strategy. What do others think? Good strategy or horrible annoyance?
I do this everytime I play as Comm.

You will have no choice but to build apart in NS3.0 as each structure now requires you to space em out (electrical range incresed though). I know what you mean about a cramped base I have seen some awful designed ones, however it's a LOT easyer to defend when it's compact. Having said that you will almost always need at least 1 siege there as too many a time have it witnessed a gorge running into base and dropping 5 ocs which is as we all know is not fun for spawning marines.

TBH i'd rather have an elecy protection then a Turret farm at the begining of the game. The key to a good base defense is knowing what time to start laying turrets down. Usually for me it's when I see my first Fade.

Personally I think it's a better defense then wasting res on turret farms... well works best for my style of comming.

Well lolfighter I have to say that NS:C is starting to grow on me. I did for a while find it a bit boring but I seem to be getting more into it. I'm still in favour for server segrigation as I don't believe NS & NS:C will work well together. Looking at the server stats more people are playing NS:C then NS atm so obviously people do like it.

Hehe I can't wait for public release, anything special planned LB? Like a reg server lockdown?

Official NS 2.0 Trailer (22MB DivX 5.01 req)

Get him to watch that... V nice.

[edit]

I've never actually made one myself but I think I remember how to do it manually.

You have to record the demo, play it back using viewdemo (not playdemo) then record while watching it. I think the command is something along the lines of record xxx.dem 30 (30 being the amount of FPS you want to capture).

This will convert each frame into a 2.5MB bitmap so it will take up oodles of megs on your pc. Use a batch converter to change them to jpg. Then you can use Adobe Permier (or at least MS movie maker) to import your pictures to edit and add a music tract to it.

Please note I haven't done this myself and my info may be a bit off there, but afaik this is how to do it manually.

If you suceed at it can you post on how you did it for future ref?

Well i'm using the Nokia 6610 Small, Nice easy interface, extremly lightweight GPRS... etc

I'm not a fan of Picture phones I believe if you want to take pictures use a camera. This does have the option to add a camera if you want one.

http://www.nokia.ie/nokia/0,,28557,00.html

There is a newer version of this in the process the 6620 coming out soon.

Th N-Gauge.. good idea personally I think it's far too chuncky to carry about in your pocket. Also i'd have no battery left if I had one of those.

Idealistically (and this is what i'm going for next) is the 6800 (or the better model at the time). This badboy looks like a normal phone but has a lurvly flipout keyboard built in. Very good design + nokia software so very easy to use.

Nothing personal LaYkE, but you haven't played NS:C for three years yet; you've played CS for three years by now, and you still keep coming back for more, yet you fear that NS:C gets boring? I'm sorry, but for your reasoning is confusing at best. Can you explain?
Thats what I said, CS for 3 years

Sorry for being unclear. It's like this ::

CS has become very same old same old however I keep coming back to it.... actually no I don't I keep going back to the one server where my old clan hang out and have a laff with them. I don't go to any other CS servers, it's really the people/community that keep me there, good laff.

NS:C on the other hand is new but at the same time very repetitive and does get boring.... it lacks an edge imo. CS had it's hiding in buildings sniping, buying a para for the laff). While the NS tech tree you follow is an original idea and (quite novel if I do say so myself) I still find the oh lets go straight down a hallway and shoot aliens, if were lucky we'll make it to the hive. There is very little strat involved just shooting skills. Then again the Alien side is a little better in this aspect.

I guess what I mean is that NS maps rather then CO maps will be the big cheese. NS:C is great if you want a quick game straight into action but I can't see any major pull towards it in all fairness. I have found (and judging) from playing most people play a round or two at most then drop.

It's all down to a preference and mine's NS only :) Who knows maybe Flayra will release an excellent V1.0 with all the bells and whistles, it is only beta atm.

Well LB, Iv'e voted for the separate boxes. It eliminates the whining that the admins will come up against tbh. My personal pref are NS maps, NS:C atm is fun but gets boring & repetative (much like CS has become to me). Don't get me wrong even after 3 years of playing CS I still go back to it, same as NS:C. Separate servers would be idealistic. We are (if we decide to run NS:C) going to run separate boxes, less hassle and easyer to manage (plugins etc).

General / Your Comming Style
« on: December 29, 2003, 04:53:56 AM »
After reading the topic..

Esuna i'm in the same boat as you with the temper. I'm used to clan comming, so when marines don't go where I want them or run off with that shiny new hmg(that I had to scrimp and save for) to battle 4 OC's by himself, I lose it.

No word of a lie, I will scream at the maines, type "GO TO THE FU**ING WAYPOINT" etc.. If they don't listen I punish em by no weapons for a while. Or when they ask for weapons ask them will they follow orders if I give them one.

It may seem a bit harsh but I think when people comm they tend to think of the game at hand as theirs. For exampe when i'm in that chair, your MY marines and youv'e got MY weapons.

How I comm:

3 basics first: IP, Tfac, and Armoury.

Tfac will be built close to the CC with the other 2 structures in close proximity for that electrical defense. I don't build turrets until fades start appearing, a waste of res imo at gamestart. If you do the job right you'll only see about 2 or 3 fades (and the od Onos) during the game and 6 marines kitted with HMG's no problem.

Now, all marines go cap me some res.. and gut me some towers. 2 marines head off towards where I think a Gorge has been the rest are cappers. Once I have 3-4 res towers I start to look at what chamers they have.

Now pending on what is put up I will drop an Obs or a Armslab.

MC :: well your best defense for movement imo is armour.Lv1 weapons will work if you can actually hit them (as an experienced skulk can use celerity with great effect).

DC :: ah the big bad boy. This has got to be the worst chamber for me. This warrents more research into Lv2/Lv3 weaps which costs teh .

SC :: Personally as an Alien I prefer these as my starter chamber. As Comm Armour + MT (MT priority)

I move fast and by Lv1 armour/weapons I expect to see a hive go down. Most games I comm we rarely make it to level 3 weapons or HA/JP(which kinda kills the fun tbh). PG's are a must, I usually have them ready to go by the time we make our first assault.

Best,
Pete

Ireland, pinging 170-225 with 512 DSL.

I have found low pings in NS to be less important as it is in DoD/CS (which I stick to my local servers for)

I haven't played on LM in a long time due to lack of NS2.0. I haven't installed it because I was waiting for 3.0 to be released. Playing 3.0 recently has made me realize that we could be waiting a while.... So back to 2.0 I go. Reinstall her tonigtht and hopefully i'll see you chaps later on. Then off I go trying to fix all the bugs.

I can ask a few of the krew to give you a hand with the design end of things if you want? IMO when it comes to websites simplicity is often the best

First off i'll need to know what exactly your aiming for? Are you going totally NS or branching other games? Pm me on IRC and i'll try to give as much help as I can.

Best,
Pete
