Off Topic / No Manual With Boxed Hl2
« on: November 04, 2004, 10:34:44 PM »
Roger that, I love inventive manuals too.  They really run the gamut, from the skimpy and brief (like the ones you find IN the CD case insert.  Stupid) to giant manuals for flight sims, or the lovely textbook that was MOO2.

I've saved every manual since the original X-Wing (where my gaming legacy begins).  For the most part they're stacked alongside my desk, and are basically desk height now.  I've saved all the boxes too, because usually they're pretty cool too.  So I want my HL2 box as well!

As far as Strategy guides go, that is a mixed bag.  I usually stay away, but does anyone remember the guides for X-Wing and (I think) TIE Fighter?  They were hundreds of pages, and had a freakin' story to go with the in-depth descriptions of every mission.  Now THAT was a strategy guide.  Downhill since then.

General / How To Skulk Better!
« on: November 04, 2004, 10:22:13 PM »
I've been trying to improve my skulk skills lately.  I used to treat skulks as expendable assets, and rushed like mad when I was one.  Now, some servers this works, but we all know LM is not one of those places.   :D

One thing I'll have to say works really well for me (and it's already on here) is the vertical movement!  Even a simple parabolic movement up and down a straight wall gets you to the rine much safer.

In regards to making Steam pay-to-play, doesn't the Steam subscription sound like a first step?  Sure you get lots of product in the beginning, but in the long term does it really retain its value?

Hey, has it been confirmed that if you buy the Gold package off of Steam, you actually get the game on disc in addition to all the other bonus stuff?  I've been looking around without much luck, and I'm trying to decide whether to buy it on Steam (having gotten my free Bronze pack makes it worthwhile) or just buy it at the store.  Because, like others, I want my CDs/DVD!

You probably want either

bm.social_life_percent == 0.2
or
bm.get_social_life_percent() == 0.2

Not good coding practice to name your accessors the same name as the data member itself.   B)  :help:

This looks like fun!  I'm downloading now.  Of course I agree with the rest that we should try and gather the LM folks together in one server.

I've noticed comms are starting to research hand grenades again on LM, at least on occasion (which is up from never).  I for one am quite happy about it, like I've said earlier I think they're underrated.

I mean incendiary grenades would be cool, but the regular ones are just more practical.

General / Disappearing Favorites List
« on: October 19, 2004, 10:48:56 PM »
I've found that the Favourites list for Steam (with your favourites for all your games) doesn't delete itself, but if I launch NS first and go use that favourites screen, it deletes them!

So I've taken to using the general Favourites list now.

Off Topic / Hl2 Really Gold This Time

Uh oh, now I'm really worried about finals in December.  Where will I find the time?  To study, that is.

They are handy for getting aliens out of vents without having to hand out GLs, and for destroying stuff around corners.  I think increasing quantity would definitely make sense, and hopefully bring them back into the game!  I miss having grenades, but I dare not ask the comm to research unless we're swimming in res.

Now there's something I never thought of Seth.  LOL, what a plan!

That'll learn them.  I chose Scipii too, so I got plenty of money.  I'll buy 'em all off.

Rome:  Total War
Dawn of War

Way to involved in the RTW campaign to wander into the older stuff right now.  Stupid Egyptians are causing a ruckus.

Off Topic / What Is In A Name?
« on: October 04, 2004, 09:59:37 PM »
Well, my name is what it is pretty much because I think penguins are the greatest birds/animals/things on the planet.  I used coolpenguin for old e-mail addys, and eventually when I got into games I wanted to think of something original, so I pulled Gonzo out of the air, and made it CPGonzo (CP for coolpenguin) and played CS with that.

Eventually I got tired of having a name pulled out of nowhere, so I chose EmperorPenguin because the Emperor Penguin is the biggest and most noble of all penguins.

I've played other non-HL shooters as SuperCheese, and RTS games as CommanderKor.

Given further consideration, if I was presented with HL:Source, I probably would go back and play it one more time.  And then wish there was OpFor:Source.

General / How Did You Find Ns?
« on: October 01, 2004, 10:35:34 PM »
I was just randomly cruising either the DoD website, or maybe it was cs.net, and there was a blurb in the news about a new mod called Natural Selection.  I went, read about it, downloaded, and never looked back.

There was a space of a few months directly after Steam came out that I stopped playing, but then 3.0 came out and I was right back on the train.

I'm partial to the collector's edition as well, for the DVD if nothing else.  But I don't know just how much having that is worth to me.  The T-shirt and book sampler (?) are hardly convincing besides.

I guess HL1: Source would be cool, but how many times have I replayed through that game already?  A whole lot.  I'm sure most of us can say that.

Not to mention that ATI voucher.  LOL, I had almost forgotten about that.

Off Topic / Hello
« on: September 27, 2004, 09:08:53 PM »
Whoa, I've been so focused on the NS forums that I never even ventured into the Off Topic section.  Figured there was way too much to catch up on.  But I suppose I should say hello.

I've been playing on LM exclusively for maybe 4 or 5 months now.  As you've no doubt been told many times, the quality of play there is the best I've run across.  It's no shame being killed over and over again by you guys.  I even get my own licks in every now and then...

Playing a little less, what with school and all, but I still try to make a showing on the forums, and I even decided to give IRC a try, not my usual thing.

So anyways, that's me.  See you on the server.

OH NOES

I was also present at the Mineshaft game.  While it didn't start out very seriously, Steve resisted all attempts to get a good game going second and third time through.  TD and TKs abounded.  Just some guy goofing off, really, but he did take it too far.

Yeah.  It was closer to the orginal concept I guess, but the new one seems to work better/is less buggy.
