Off Topic / Airsoft..

I've been into serious airsoft for several years now, and if you actually want to play around with friends in a field or something, you're better off getting an electric rifle.  Loads more expensive, but much more satisfying.  The spring rifle you picked out will feel lighter and cheaper, and shoot one piddly shot at a time just like a spring pistol would.  Of course, if you're just shooting around in the backyard, that may be exactly what you want.  You also don't have to buy a battery or charger that way.

We used Airsoft Atlanta for a long time here, until they stopped shipping to Canada.  It's still illegal to import airsoft (as a replica firearm) in Canada, so I suppose it was a sensible choice.  They always screwed up my friends' orders, but never mine, so I suppose I like 'em.

If you do decide to stick with a spring-powered weapon, I'd reccomend a TM pistol.  They're probably the most solid, and spring weapons in the sub $100 shoot with similar power and accuracy, pistol or rifle.  Look for something called hop-up, with puts a backspin on the BB that increases range.  Most products will have it.

See, I can't ever talk about airsoft without rambing on.  Terrible thing.

I agree some of it seems silly, but I just chalked it up to having its roots in a hundred-year old science fiction story.  It can be hard to stay true to original material while making allowances for how completely different things are today.  I think the original book bears another read, to see what was original and what was new.

I will admit I rolled my eyes when they tell you the tripods have been buried for thousands of years or whatever... but then I got over it.

I read a ton, but I've traditionally shunned fantasy books just because I'm notorious for getting sucked into large pulp collections (Star Wars, for instance).  Recently I picked up The Thousand Orcs by R.A. Salvatore, and actually enjoyed it.  I also finally know just what Guenhwyvar is.  Too bad my penguins have no sway on the astral plane :D

But I digress.  I'm also simultaneously reading through Winston Churchill's Second World War memoirs.  They're in-depth but quite dry at times, and are also rather long.

I second Anarki, this is pretty freakin' cool.  I mean, you can see so much!  Think back to 10 years ago, when the military was happy enough to have something half this good.  Now we get to play around with it for free.

The only one I actually remember getting all misty at was Saving Private Ryan.  It's a movie meant to generate emotions, that's for sure.  I own it and I think I've only watched it twice, once in theatres and once out.  Anyways, right at the end, when the flashback finally ends and we're back with James Ryan and his family and he starts crying and looks at his wife and says "Tell me I'm a good man, tell me I've led a good life."  I lost it there.

*edit* I've come close in a few more movies, but never to the point of crying.  Something about that male machismo thing, maybe.  Real men don't cry, they just eat steak and build stuff, right low?  :p

We can blame full-time work and WoW on my end.  I still try to play NS once or twice a week, but I guess with the rest of us busy/whatever, I run into empty servers more often, so I end up playing even less.  Too bad really.  But I still love you guys.

As awesome as that would be, he is only 11 and the language is not overly appreciated by my mother.  In fact, that puts a lot of multiplayer games out of the question  :)

Phew, wasn't quite so addicting once the initial newgame run burned off.  But it's still taking up a fair bit of time.  It also means my absence from NS will be short-lived.

My younger brother was looking for a game with no monthly fee, perhaps I'll reccomend Guild Wars to him.

I had to go and do it.  I had to borrow my friend's 10-day WoW pass.  Now I must play, and for once I sympathise with all you who got on board a long time ago.  I suspect I'll be totally absent from the server for at least a week or two before I calm down and feel like playing NS again.  But until then, I'm a goner.

I played CS when it was the only mod around that I really cared about.  It was good simple fun, but it quickly got swept away when DoD showed up.  I played in the first three Battle For Europe games, and got a healthy taste of organized co-operative play (not to mention a couple of 8-12 hour marathons).

But then NS showed up.  The perfect game, mixing FPS and RTS elements, and requiring true co-operation every time to win.  I think Necrosis said it best, deathmatch is dull.  In fact, I have more fun playing the single player elements of games, and usually don't explore their multiplay options (or when I do, they last about a week.)  Why is this?  Because when I do feel like a multiplayer game, I go play NS on LM!

Seriously, I've never bothered to hang at the same server before (stats=blah), but I finally found in LM the perfect kind of server.  Full of talented, respectful players, and with a strong community backing, its no wonder I can't find a good MP experience anywhere else!

You're Mini-EP's favourite slotter Low.  Then again, you're the only slotter he knows.  But hey, I'm sure he'll appreciate the gesture.

General / What would you want to see in Source version?

I know I know, but I did give the old disclaimer at the top, we've heard it all before (or at least we must have, I know I didn't make it up myself!)

But for some reason the picture of an onos nudging a fat green slug around the map makes me laugh.

This is way old, but I guess I have to bring it back up:  The mobile hive slug.

He doesn't exactly move on his own, but other aliens can push him.  He'd be great on those vast outdoor maps everyone blathered on about, because he could roll down hills.  Want to escape a hive rush?  Roll the hive slug into a toxic pit or deep pool of water!  Take that marines!

Also, hive slug>dune buggy, it just gets rolled over (like everything else).

If this doesn't get put in NS:Source, I will refuse to play.

Aye, I'm blown away!  Those are so much cooler than I pictured them.  Low has the skill.  The swing is pretty darn cool too, but don't go mailing that out!

<3 the penguins.  Especially because, unless I miss my guess, those are emperor penguins, which just adds to the cool factor.

General / Typical Day on LM
« on: April 14, 2005, 10:08:36 PM »
People were behaving earlier today, but I know it happens more often than we'd like.  I personally don't feel I have the skill to balance a team out one way or the other, but I often try to help the unstacked team.  I guess I am better than when I started playing here, but I'm no Holy Devil.

But even I, benevolent as I am, sometimes get tired of anti-stacking and losing.  Times like that I join the stacked team and enjoy an easy win.

But nothing is definite.  I've seen some hard-fought games against stacked games, and plenty of non-stacked ones too.

Aye, just call him Scythe like I do.  Because GD is right, there can be only one Dark.  You may have to fight him for it, unwilling or not.
