And according to ye olde damage calculator, it's more like 11.7 minutes :S

Well, I just went and messed around, FPS does not affect it as I assumed (not counting the quirks in the engine with FPS, just speaking of NS dependancies, remember the whole JP fuel and charge/leap damage fiasco in 1.0).

In 8 minutes of welding the hive I got it to exactly 20% health, which means it would have died at 10 minutes.
I also noticed with mp_drawdamage on that the damage was occuring faster than the hive pain sound/anim played.
The hive also heals itself at a rate of about 2 hp per second, and the welder was doing 4 damage at a rate somewhere between .5 and 1.0 seconds.

so the question arises, does the welder do more damage at higher weapon levels? Since we know it can be used as a weapon (a crappy one, but still so), its feasible to think that the higher the weapon level, the more damage the welder does.

Welders are not affected by weapon upgrades, interestingly, Hand Grenades are!

well whats wierd is on the fr31ns server we started at 10:00d kill the hive at 16:51 solo weld so whats going on here? hive was at full hp with no dcs around it,
also that ye old damage calculator seems to be outdated, being that its 2 skulks bite to kill a marine, when it isnt anymore :p
also according to the calculator welders are affected by weapon lvl i tested the hive at 0 lvl weapon and got
1750 hits, each doing 4 damage to hive has health of : 0, in 700 seconds, excluding reload times.
lvl 3 i got
1346 hits, each doing 5.2 damage to hive has health of : 1, in 538.4 seconds, excluding reload times.
so... i was using a  level 3 welder, honestly the calculator should be updated, but it does prove that the weapon upgrades affect welder damage by little but still thats almost a 400 hit difference

I miss the old sparkgun, it was a weapon of fear.

Tho even now I resort to the sparkgun in CC if I have one. A knife is ok, but sparkgun has more class.

Yeah, i remember the first game of NS I ever played back in 1.04. Joined on an eclipse game, was given HA, HMG and a Welder. The welder automatically came up to use so I assumed it was my weapon. Everyone yelled at me as I walked out of base alone to take on the fades with my welder out.

This game was SOOOOOOO confusing at first

Keep thinking that.  FPS still affects a majority of the functions in NS, just not as significantly as before.  To test, join a server (not a listenserver) and set fps_max to 70, then fire off a hmg while timing it.  Then set fps_max to 20 and fire off a magazine and see how long it takes.  I'll bet my paycheck there's a significant time difference.  There is no way to remove "FPS based things" in the halflife engine, despite the 1.1.0.0 HL patch netcode changes that everyone believes were a miracle.

Note the bold italics. I know all that crap about teeny tiny variances due to FPS because of the engine. I speak of when things in NS used to be directly calculated by framerate, such as leap and charge damage, and then they switched over to calculating per second.
