Off Topic / unGoogleable Music, very unusual
« on: July 14, 2006, 11:45:32 AM »
Never before have I found a song to which I can't find the lyrics, nor the name. Googling any of the lyrics in it turns up absolutely no search results - and trust me, I've tried a lot.

Can anyone please tell me what this song is?

Here it is

I will be very grateful if you do :)

Off Topic / Switching to... Linux!
« on: July 05, 2006, 08:57:41 AM »
Hey guys and gals,

I'm thinking of switching to Linux for my next comp install. I, however, have no experience with it. I'm a pretty tech-y person, but none of that knowledge is of Linux. So, this is why I've come to you people.

Here are the things I do on my computer now:
- essays/graphs/etc (OpenOffice is fine)
- music, lots of it - 100 gigs (WinAmp, and I'm not too keen on switching - is there a very similar alternative?)
- GTalk, MSN (Trillian, Jabber? Don't know. I only use these 2 networks, nothing else)
- photo editing (currently using Ulead PhotoImpact, but don't mind using anything else)
- BitTorrent (I love uTorrent, but apparently it's windows-only, so I'm looking for a good alternative)

That's pretty much all I need. So, guys, help me pick a distro, and tell me if I should go ahead with this or not. Thank yous :)

Off Topic / Please help me find a movie which...
« on: February 05, 2006, 06:39:20 PM »
I'm looking for a movie that contains as many different themes as possible; it could be a major picture, or a small-time production, or anything in between. Basically, I need a movie that encompasses as much variety as possible. The themes could be simple, like love/violence/family/etc, or highly complex, or anything at all. I just need lots of them, in one movie.

This is for a little personal project of mine.

Thank you kind sirs

Yeah. I'm slow with essays.

So Happy New Year's to all of you! Out with the old and in with the new. Let's hope life takes out the things that sucked and adds things that rocked (oh that was a good sentence was it not?)

A New Year's celebration needs a good quote, so here's one.

"Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right" - person

Yay!  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)

« on: April 14, 2005, 11:03:50 PM »
Ok, so here's a song that I wrote for an upcoming school concert. Right now, it's being synthesized by a small sound base - just a small step above midi quality... excuse me for that :) Just give me some comments on it, etc. It'd be especially nice if they were of a musical nature, for those of you with talents in music :)
Thanks!

And BTW, the melody part is supposed to be for vocals; right now, it's just an instrument, soon to be replaced by voice.

General / Why I love LunixMonster
« on: February 15, 2005, 09:03:55 PM »
I ended up playing on a random pub server today, after camping the LM join line for about 20 mins and not being able to get in. I went with Corvus to some server on ns_origin, not sure which server it was. Me and him went Marines (oh stacks), and he was comm. It was originally a 3vs3, but later grew to about 4vs4 (yay). The Aliens' first hive was Furnace. Our team (me, in other words) went to Comp Lab, Xenoform, Bio, capped all the left-side nodes. In the meanwhile, the Alien gorge kept building OCs right in my path - just starting them; not even trying to finish them. Each time I killed him while he was hiding behind his unbuilt OC he would complain a bit.

So, after about 10 minutes, I build a phase gate near Furnace (I can't use the word sneak up; I clearly made signs that I was there). 1 alien kept rushing me, and after I killed him about 5 times, he accused me of hacking and left. I built the phase successfully (meeting no other resistance), and Corvus dropped me and a teammate jetpacks and shotguns. My teammate and I went into the hive, started shooting it, but then he became incredibly attracted to an OC and started shooting it instead of the hive.

Despite it taking me well over 1 minute to kill the hive by myself, I met no alien resistance. I later went on to Ventilation and tried to build a phase gate there, but every possible area was filled with OCs. I died, and was given a jetpack and shotty again. I tried several times to build a phase gate, but died to a high-pinger who would never ever get hit by my pellets. He eventually died for some reason, and I finished the phase. This time, my teammate prioritized a bit better and decided to shoot the hive. Hive went down (Again with no resistance), and we went to Ventilation for the last hive. Unfortunately, the whole area was lamed up with OCs. I died, again, several more times. I could never find a safe spot to build a phase gate, and there was a skulk camping in there with cloak (sens second hive) who would always finish me off after OC fire.

At this point, the Aliens have 2 players, 1 gorge and 1 newb who always had 100 res and didn't spend it on anything except cloaking.

I couldn't convince my teammate to come with me to the hive to take it down; he was more intent on getting the DC down in Laser Drilling. Eventually, I came up with the genius idea to sit on top of the hive and shoot it down. Yay, it goes down after abotu a minute, and I die to OCs. After about 10 seconds, the hive goes up again, in ventilation. I go again, shoot the hive, get it down, die to OCs. Hive goes up again; this time, the Alien went skulk and started lagging insanely again, making it impossible to hit him.

Finally, Corvus decides to go with me to get the hive down, and instead we find the lone alien and kill him. Game over, after 30 minutes.

Summary:
- No coordination between Marines (except me and Corvus)
- No coordination between Aliens (I never saw more than 1 at a time)
- Completely unskilled Aliens (only died to lagged skulks or OCs)
- Completely unskilled Marines (couldn't kill skulks with JP and HMG)
- Res whoring aliens
- Equipment-demanding Marines (drop me a shottie! I don't care that I'm in a random vent near freaking Sewer hive on another map, drop me a damn shotty)

Sigh.
*goes back to LM*

I should never, ever leave this server again. Much better to play Minesweeper while the server is full instead of going elsewhere.

General / General Tips for NS
« on: February 12, 2005, 11:57:40 PM »
Here are a few tips, mainly teamplay-based, for NS, to make your (and others') gameplay experience more enjoyable.
Marine:
- When someone is welding the air, quickly tapping their welder, or turning their flashlight on and off, they might need a weld. Weld them!
- Heavies are not the only units relying on armour; weld light armours as well.
- If you see a node, don't pass by it unless you are trying to be sneaky. Take it down.
- Careful when knifing nodes along with other players... FF is on
- If you have a good weapon and are surely to be devoured by an Onos and have no chance of taking him down, drop your weapon. A teammate might come by and pick it up.
- Cover your teammates, especially those who are vulnerable (reload, GL, builders, welders)
- Spread out when moving, especially through corridors
- When defending a location, stay in a corner - it's safer
- Lure Fades/Onos into the base by making them think that there are no Marines in there; don't open fire until the lifeform is deep in your base. Then open fire, and they won't have time to flee.
- Block lifeforms from escaping by standing in their way, maybe shooting them, or knifing.
- Block lifeforms from escaping by using doors (nancy, origin, maybe others)
- Don't get ammo for a hive rush. Comm drops ammo on the way, if he's half-decent.
- Do not try to degrade your commander; advise him nicely or just follow his orders. Saying "you si nub" doesn't help him or the team.
- If your commander is bad, eject him. Don't try to badmouth.
- If your commander is ejected and you lose, don't complain.
- Don't jump in the chair just to drop IPs and armoury. Chances are, if there are any better comms on your team, they are already way out of base and wouldn't want to go back to jump in the chair. If you go in the chair, stay in it.
- Try not to use voice excessively; sounds are very important.
- Do not give up if you have even the slightest chance of winning.

Alien:
- When someone is making any sound (chuckle, etc) and you are gorge, heal them.
- When someone is making any sound (chuckle, etc) and you are not gorge, follow them, or look to see what they are doing. They are requesting your attention.
- If you see a res tower, don't pass it by unless you have a more important objective. Take it down.
- Careful when taking res nodes down along with other players... FF is on.
- At the beginning of the game, assign/volunteer for roles. There'll be people who drop a res node, who go fade, who drop the next hive and chambers. Organization is key.
- If you are about to rush anything with a teammate, and your teammate(s) go, follow them, even if you weren't planning to go just yet. Better to go together than 1 by 1.
- When rushing base, kill obs -> armoury (if it's upgraded/upgrading) -> phase gate -> arms lab/IP.
- Be very careful not to block Onos/Fade from escaping; chances are, if they are running away, they are low on health.
- Try not to use voice excessively; sounds are very important
- Sacrifice your life as skulk/gorge for a more important lerk/fade/onos egg that a Marine is shooting at; the finishing egg might have those few seconds needed to finish egging.
- Don't bunnyhop, it looks ridiculous!
- Do not give up if you have even the slightest chance of winning.

Contribute your own. Keep in mind that these are general guidelines, not teaching you personal skills, but more teamplay things.

Yup. Every game board has to have this thread.
So, what have you folks done that is ogm-so-nerdy and that seconds after you've done it you think "wow, I've been playing NS too much"? Share your experiences.
Me: I thought of wall-strafing in a room where I saw the walls were straight enough, without anything sticking out of them :D
In case some of you don't know, wallstrafing is walking/strafing against the walls to get more speed.

General / Detailed Map Strategies - ns_nothing
« on: January 03, 2005, 01:01:48 PM »
Last update: Sunday, January 9, 2005
Greetings to everyone.
Here is my guide for ns_nothing, for the Marine side. I have mainly shown structure placements. There are basically 3 categories for structure placement: relocate (whole base), lockdown (hive or important location), and siege (hive).
Turrets are coloured green and siege turrets are coloured blue.
Bases/Relocates

Viaduct Relocate
This is a very hard location to hold, as the high ceiling and high number of vents give Aliens roaming freedom, and non-jetpacking Marines have a very hard time tracking targets due to the Alien texturing all around. Not a recommended spot for a relocate; there are better hives to move to.

Ventilation Relocate
A somewhat rare relocation spot, yet it is quite useful.
First, you control at least 2, maybe 3, most likely 4 res nodes: Ventilation, Cargo (hive), Generator and Miasma Walkway. Also, there are only 2 exits out of this area, making it easy to guard.

Marine Start Base
Best layout is shown, in my opinion. Arms lab and Proto lab hidden far back in the base; hard to get to, hard to get out of. IP far from CC so that the Commander can hop out and kill any Skulks chomping on his IP. Notice the unobstructing placement of unusuable structures (TF, Obs), and easy access to useable structures (Phase Gate, Armoury). Marines shouldn't be jumping over hurdles just to get their share of ammo!

Marine Start Relocate
Quite a rare spot for a relocate; only meters from the main Marine Start base. I have only done this once, and I've seen other comms do it extremely rarely as well. Not much to comment on here.
One advantage: close to the Pit, so that comm and jump out and win morally in case the game is lost.

Cargo Bay Relocate
This is by far the most common hive lockdown+relocate on this map. One very important thing: make sure to place a high enough yet climbable structure near the vent (Armoury, TF, Arms Lab, Proto Lab. Preferably former or second), to allow Marines to get in the vent without the need to boost each other. A TF would be the best choice, since you can eletrify it.

South Viaduct (unnamed) Relocate
A very rare spot. Makes an interesting relocate, but there are better locations out there. The turret near the vent will make it possible to jump in the vent and guard it against incoming Aliens should your situation get dire.

Lockdowns

Viaduct Lockdown
Hard to hold. You are quite likely to lose this location if the Aliens will be in need of a hive location.

Power Silo Lockdown
Note the turret placement; hard to access for Aliens.

Generator Lockdown
Very important location to hold; quite possibly, the most important location on the map (aside from hives, of course). You have access to an abundance of res nodes: Generator, Miasma Walkway, Ventilation, Ominous Kismet, South Viaduct (unnamed). 5 in total. Then, you have Cargo Bay Hive a bit farther away, Marine Start (in case that's not your base), Viaduct, Red Room, etc. This is the spot you want to have. There will be a strong battle here. You might choose to place a few more turrets here, and some mines.

General / Detailed map strategies
« on: December 20, 2004, 07:52:11 PM »
I have an idea: create extremely detailed strategies for each official ns_ map available, or maybe just the most played ones. What do I mean by extremely detailed?
- List of rooms, hives, RTs
- Advantages and disadvantages of each room/hive/RT
- Relocation spots
- Usual order of RT capping/expansion/lockdowns
- Spots to place chambers
- Spots to gestate
- Sieging areas
- Ambush areas
- JP or HA friendliness (what's more effective)
- Onos/fade/lerk friendliness (what's more effective)
- Best/worst hive to start with
- Usual hive lockdowns
- General chokepoints
- More?
If we get enough people to do this, we could essentially create an instrumental guide for newbies, pubbers, and clanners. We would have a thread for each map, with discussions from each side, and the main person for each thread (or an admin) would be responsible for incorporating these changes to the first post (which would contain the whole strategy). What do you guys think about this?
Here's a map list. If you guys want to do this, put your name on for the map(s) you would best be responsible for (usually, the map you know the best).

General / Early fade counters?
« on: December 20, 2004, 10:44:10 AM »
Hello people!
I'm relatively new to the LM community; I just started playing on the server a week ago or so. I've commed a few games here, and many games on other servers, but if I lose, the reason is always the same: early fades. 4-5 minutes, these devils appear, and halt my progress completely. They take out my res flow, obliterate my base, and slowly kill my team, one by one.
Now, how can I stop this? Basically, what I'm asking for, is what do *you* do to counter these fades. Do you stop them from appearing, or take them down after they've used that 50 res?
Thanks.
[edit]
PS. This is about browsing the LM forums... for some reason, all the posts in a thread are now listed only by their title, and the body is not there. I have to separately click on each one to view it, or see the thread in lo-fi mode. I think it's an option in my controls, but I couldn't find it yet. Can somone help me?
