I'm rather shocked that nobody has mentioned the series A Song of Fire and Ice, by George R.R. Martin. It's fantastic so far, with hugely complex politics, engaging characters, and an author who's not afraid to kill off the person you thought was the most important. Three books are out now and I believe a fourth one is scheduled to hit before Christmas
