That is really nice. I'm almost ashamed to have to ask, but what part of Eclipse was that supposed to be?

Not all of us here at LM are bitter nay-sayers.  I still enjoy NS from time to time and am addicted to the newly (to me) 'up' forums, even if they are a little slow (activity-wise).

Hells yeah, I'll be the first guy in line the day it comes out... err, well, within the first couple thousand on the download queue.

I've been enjoying this game for, what, five years now, and paid nothing but voluntary donations to the guy behind the game and a handful of servers I've enjoyed. Hard for me to get upset because he took a year off from his free game mod and left us with a very decent build.

Only thing that's stopping me from playing more these days are maps and servers, to be honest. I can only play so many games on Eclipse and Veil. Only other server I found that I generally liked has a primetime admin that annoys the nuts outta me (i.e., being kicked off in mid-game when it's packed while I'm building the team-requested movements for not typing out a response to his voice comm requesting me on the other side of the map immediately). Plus you buy your reg slots, which... I dunno, fair, but turns me off a little.

I have a bunch of other friends that are waiting on NS:S to go back for graphics, mostly. And a lot of the preteen-teen-undergrad crowd that started playing back in the day will probably have the disposible income to spend on it now, especially at $20, so I think it'll do well. If it turns out to be good, I bet all but the most jaded naysayers end up buying.

I'm a Constie, where are they??

He sent something out to our super constie e-mail addresses. Between this and the starting of work on NS:S I actually got pumped for a few games this weekend and had some fun. Though I'm even worse than I was originally. Hopping between servers I was reimpressed by the total difference in marine gameplay between FF on and FF off.

Back on the original Everquest with the new progression server. -_-

Anyone tried the retail version of the Ship? Not that I'm planning on buying it, but just curious...

Also heard that TF2 was finally going to be released as an add-in with HL2 Episode 2.

It would have been so easy, too.

1st of April, 2006: It is with pleasure that we can announce that the forums are ready for re-opening and will be up later today.

I heard the next version of NS is going to be built on the DNF engine. Just rumor though. *shiftyeyes*

I never understood peoples fascination with WoW...it always struck me as a highly cliché, over-involved fantasy game. I just don’t understand how it became so damn popular. Kinda pisses me off sometimes cause I don’t play and I miss all those little “in” jokes as I cruise around the intarweb.

It's like most MMOs, carrot on a stick. Then you make friends in the game and, well, you're really stuck, hehe. I'd quit EQ2 but I think there are a couple people that might really upset.

Think I'm going to somehow force myself to limit time, though. Even playing other games and watching TV feels like a break from EQ2 now, which is sorta sad :p

Everquest 2 dominates my life.

Still miss NS, hope it makes a comeback someday.

With the site and forums down so long, can it even revive at this point? I think NS on HL1 is dead for sure, and NS:S seems too far off.

I was just thinking this myself. They need something big. Whether that be a release with some radical addition, or NS:S, it needs something. And not a website that keeps track of stats or whatever that BUS carrot-on-a-stick was supposed to be.

There's maybe ten viable NS servers I can play on now, meaning they play ns_ and they actually have players. Sometimes during off-hours the number sinks below five.

EQ2 > my life, grad school apps, and Natural Selection.

I log on for the occasional game but the server's always empty, just go to the highest player count non-llama server. It's frustrating me now, though, I can't even solo a gorge anymore D:

When I read these days it's mostly out of math journals, but I have to give props to my favorite book of all time, Small Gods. If you like Adams-style humor, witicisms about religion and philosophy, or Terry Pratchett, it might be the book that changes your life.

I'm only really waiting on A Song of Ice and Fire and the last book in Age of Unreason, the former of which is the best modern fantasy as far as I'm concerned, the latter of which is a neat little alternate history where Newton's alchemical experiments turn out to be fruitful. The last book in Unreason is actually out, but I haven't picked it up yet.

Two things, f

First can't you just put a plugin on that makes the aliens invulnerable for 2 seconds when they spawn.  Then you could allow mines?

Two, Mr. Pie, marines with nades can get the aliens behind rt's easy.

Meh, I don't really like solutions that involve invulnerability... aliens in their hive don't really need any more help, and being physically denied access to shoot them just feels cheap.

Better solutions would be (1) a built hive disables mines (either removes, or renders unable to act until it goes down -- does not blow them up, obviously, hehe) within spawn radius or (2) new skulks can't blow up mines for two seconds (different from invulnerability).

I recall a few people saying they played NWN, does anyone still do so? I've started getting into PWs and I'm wondering if I should be looking for familiar faces!!

I used to play on Exaria a lot, but my HotU CD is borked beyond belief and I wasn't really into it enough to get a replacement, hehe.

Beaconing is supposed to weak the Marine taem for those few seconds, and give the Aliens a chance to destroy the phase gate.

Quote
TBH, I would prefer that the rines be able to have the old phase ablility back.  It was way better that way.  I mean the rines still had to bacon and run to pg, which is a few seconds.  Now bacon is a death sentence.

>_> Actually, beacon's intended purpose is an emergency panic button when marine start is under attack. It was never meant to be an alternate means of uberfast wavespawning for rushes. <_<

Yeah, but it's a really neat strategy that shouldn't be screwed with, in my mind. The first time I saw it (with ye olde bant cornmando that shall not be named), I thought it was one of the coolest things I had ever seen.

If they systematically find ways to remove functionality beyond its intended use by the developers, the game ceases to become fun. It was one of the reasons I was sad to see structure blocking go, although I understand it's game breaking to lose an onos this way.

General / REQUIRED READING FOR PLAYERS
« on: December 04, 2004, 07:51:14 AM »
Hey. Just to let the copious amount of people who have no idea who I am know that I'm not talking out of me arse, I've been playing here since 2.0 release in various shapes and forms, had a res slot at one point, and donated money to both constellation and the server. So I do have somewhat of a stake in the future of LM (not insofar as my opinion should actually matter, just in that I don't want to see it collapse).

Suffice it to say, I really don't play here anymore. The reasons are more EQ2 and HL2 than anything else, plus the most intense semester of schoolwork I've ever had, but there are a couple things that tend to drive me away from NS.

The first is that as of late, the various rules have just been piling up, and the no-tolerance is wearing a little thin. As an example of such a rule, we're playing a game of combat and suddenly I hear that a dictate has been announced that there will be no more sporing of marine spawn anymore. I'm a lerk, the marines are being pressured in their base, and suddenly I'm castrated into ineffectiveness because I'm scared that I'm going to spore the wrong place and get the bant stick.

In addition, there are admins that, whenever I see them log on, be it in the middle of the game, I log off. I just don't enjoy the tense atmosphere they create. Most of the times, it's an admin that I've rarely seen log on, and when they do someone almost always catches the wrong end of the bant hammer for some sort of seemingly-frivolous reason (I'm not talking about when someone comes in for an !admin call, but then again, usually these people are not the ones that respond to the !admin call). Or every minute of every game that someone could possibly be doing something wrong, they get an instant /talk saying "OMG don't do that again or bant." Warnings are fine, but it gets annoying when the admin feels the need to micromanage every incident. As one example, TKs happen; it's why we have FF turned on, otherwise it wouldn't make sense. If a reg TKs someone and the TKee is not complaining, chances are there is no problem to manage.

I need to go now for an exam, but if I get the chance I'll sign back on to continue this list.

Well, we could make up some sort of arbitrary point scale and then just assign them to regs who tend to play... but that's just unnecessary and would lead to a lot of frustration.

General / Any Shotgun Replacement Ideas?
« on: November 06, 2004, 03:56:29 PM »
With two shots per reload, I think most mediocre players (myself at the head of the group) would never be able to kill a fade, even with a couple SGers. That would increase the domination of the single skilled fade.

I'm not sure how skilled players would fare, because I'm not one of them, hehe.

General / How Did You Find Ns?
« on: October 31, 2004, 11:46:05 PM »
I was just starting up my freshman year of college and this kid down the hall told me a new HL mod was coming out. I decided to give it a spin and was instantly hooked. The problem is, my college had some crap wireless line to feed the entire campus and it wasn't rare to spike to the max ping consistently.

I guess the first time I really got addicted was the following summer when we got a cable connection at home. I began playing on this pretty neat server Free SunnyD which culminated in an incredible series of games with Flayra, MonsE, LB, TommyD, etc, pretty much every mapper/dev/influential PT you can think of (I'm hesitant to name more names since it's been over a year, hehe). I think it was for the 2.01 release... but it's been a while, hehe.

Anyways, I got slotted up sometime the next couple days, and then unfortunately had to leave for evil college world where the pings were even worse than the previous year. Fortunately, the college wised up and got some new equipment for the next semester, so now I'm back in action and getting almost no res kicks, which is nice :D

And thus ends the Ballad of SydneyCarton (he's Sydney, Sydney Carton, greatest lil' hobbit of them all).

Off Topic / Star Wars Battlefield Or Something
« on: September 23, 2004, 08:18:21 PM »
Let me put it this way: if I bought it, and it wasn't a Star Wars game, I'd be... eh, about it. But since it is an SW game, I think it's absolutely fantastic.

It has pretty much all the battlefields you'd want from the movie, and some you probably won't recognize. The classes are all pretty unique, and there's all sorts of speeders and ships lying around if you want some fun with that (including AT-ATs, X-Wings, etc).

The downsides: everything you've heard about the AI is probably an understatement. It's absolute, horrible rubbish. They'll spend half their time running into corners, shooting at the ground, and doing other stupid things. But it's annoying, because the only mode they're really challenging on is Hard and that's only because they gain a crapload of accuracy on that setting.

Furthermore, they have this mode where two random NPC jedi (or maybe other influential figures) run around during battle. They're unkillable, and kill you pretty quickly if they catch up to you (which they rarely do if you run away). Besides being just plain silly (i.e. Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader running around in circles like idiots with their lightsabers out on the surface of Hoth), the horribleness of the AI makes it even worse. Thankfully, it can be shut off.

Despite what you've heard, AI really isn't necessary. The largest games are around 50-person, but a 32-person game should do fine in filling up a map. The big problem with that is that the netcode is horrible right now, meaning things skip back and forth with even a good connection. Hopefully, this'll be patched soon.

Until then, the servers use AI characters to fill the slots, and a lot of times this ends up with a bad stacking where 3/4 (or more!) of one team is NPC. To compound this, one of the four teams in the game is horribly out of whack. The CIS (droid army) fights the Republic, which has crazy firepower and a jetpack unit designed specifically with a weapon that one-hits most droids. The droids pretty much don't get anything. So usually everyone wants to be the Republic, and ends up stacking against the worst team. There's no admin control available ATM as far as I'm aware of, so there's nothing really to be done about it until the lag issues are fixed and the NPCs get the boot.

So, I'd say the two big problems are the lag and the big balance problem with the CIS. Other than that, the multiplayer is a whole lot of fun, and it's Star Wars. I mean, come on. Just don't buy it for the single player D:
