Well since the old one was locked due to a flamewar that I'm sure was enjoyable and worthwhile at the time, there's no reason not to have a new one.

For the very curious, here's a crappy hammer wireframe 2d overhead pic of what's going on. (It's all highlighted because hammer was drawing it in some weird colors that made it hard to see, that's why it's bright red)

http://bob.thezazi.net/mapmess.bmp

(Linked because apparently I can't post a bmp?   New forum software broken?? It's a crappy 256 color bmp, ffs)
Decimator undertook the task of piecing everything together. Compared to the layout, it's actually looking pretty close. Dubb is currently fixing some texture problems, and I'm starting on the south hive room which we'll stick in later. Progress is being made, never fear. But you wouldn't want to see the map right now. Trust me.  :p

They tend to have about 300 ft of range, depending on the walls around them. Experiment and find what works. You may even be able to share it with people on higher or lower floors.  ;)

Meh that's why I don't like the Tau, lf. Little buggers got off so easy. Let's examine shall we?

Humans - Live in just about the worst dictatorship ever invented, under the hand of a semi dead man kept alive on the sacrifices of his subjects. And he will NEVER DIE so they can't really hope for regime change. Mostly inhabit festering hive worlds swiss cheesed with tunnels and full of cities built on the ruins of cities over and over until they spear high into the deadly poisonous ruined atmosphere. Not to mention the fact that just about all the Chaos gods have it in for them and get the majority of their forces through corrupting humans and twisting them to do their dark bidding. And all their technology is many thousands of years old. Completely stagnant society. The only thing keeping it going is the momentum of 40,000 years.

Eldar - The last gasp of a race that by all rights died out 10,000 years ago when their own hedonistic lifestyle gave birth to their very own personal Chaos god. Stuck living on craftworlds floating aimlessly through the galaxy with no real home worlds to call their own. Death can't even release them from their fate, because when they die Slaanesh is waiting in the warp to consume their soul. Instead their souls get transferred to a tape backup and kept in stasis just hanging around for all eternity on the same old craftworld. But at least they've got style.

Orks - Are pretty well off, being too dumb to have any tragic history. But still... they're dumb. All they know is fighting and killing.

Chaos - Slaves to dark gods, need I say more?

Tyranids - I don't know, I actually like these guys. Sure, they descend on whole worlds and strip them of all natural resources until there's nothing left but dead and airless husks of rock... but at least they do that pretty well. There's something very pure about them. You know where you stand with them, eh?

Squats - AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH ... breathe ... HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA ... HAH!

The Necrontyr - Whoops, we made a deal with ancient beings that get off on consuming whole systems and find the terror and pain of their inhabitants makes a nice piquant seasoning. Now we're stuck in bodies of metal for all eternity fighting their battles for them.

AND THE TAU --- Happy, clean, nice. Their technology is new and it's advancing. Have no warp signature. When they die, there's no evil force of Chaos waiting to consume their soul. Don't even have the potential of birthing a Chaos god, because of the no warp signature thing. Would have been wiped out by the Imperium for their improper and unblessed technology millenia ago, but got saved by a convenient warp storm surrounding them for aeons. Instead of enslaving races, they go around befriending them. UGH!

We can only hope that the next invading Tyranid hive fleet happens to break into the galaxy right where the Tau worlds are and shows these little blue bastards what the 41st millenium is like.

Actually.. I always thought that Warhammer came BEFORE the 40k universe. In the games, you always see the Emperor dude. He was in the Warhammer game, Shadow of the Horned Rat, and you always hear the dudes in DoW saying "For the Emperor" and junk. I think a reference was made to him in an older 40k computer game too, where they said he lost his body to a disease or some junk. And since he's the immortal Emperor... *shrugs* It'd make more sense if the same Emperor who was in all the games went through the ages in the right order. The old medieval thing (archers, knights, junk like that... GYROCOPTERS) to the 40k universe.

No silly man, the emperor united the imperium and was given a fatal blow by horus during the horus heresy, then was inserted into the golden throne where he's lived (sorta) ever since.

Blah cable if you can get it. See how many people around you want to share it and then run a stealth wireless encrypted network. You could probably split the cost several ways and end up paying only a few bucks a month, and getting a much faster cable line.

Wow that's huge. I'll have to go download that and actually check it out. I'm assuming that goes all the way up to the edge of the elevator room. Hrmm... Well, let me just look at it before I start ranting again.  :p

Edit: Ok.... this may need trimming. This is ONE. HIVE. ROOM. It should not take up 1/4th of the available mapping space........

Edit Edit: Ok, I'm seeing the design more, it's not all hive, it's just confusing with all infestation textures. I see where it fits.

Ninja Edit: What you've got does look good geometry wise. The lava, I'm not so sure about. I'd like some more opinions on it. Big rooms with pits of lava always felt sort of goofy to me. Can you actually see someone using a bridge over a giant pool of lava? Wouldn't breathing in that room sort of vaporise your lungs? Also, the lava room looks like a good camping spot. Stand by the RT and you can cover anything coming out of the hive from that direction. So more cover may be needed. But again, I'm getting ahead of the current phase of development, so I'll TRY and shut up. I make no guarantees.

Psycho Edit: Bijiy's hive = looks nice. Too dark, too tiny, and there's some sort of weird hiccup where the edge of the RT platform meets the platform with the box right next to it. Walking over it a couple times I somehow got stuck and then took falling damage. Maybe scoot one of the platforms over a bit. And if you get inside the hive box thing area, it's kind of hard to get out without trick jumping. Might be a pain for gorges. And the door sort of needs to be on the other side of the room, where the hive is... >_<

Yeah, OU's on a major backbone, we're quite lucky compared to some places. I'd suggest just getting a good 56k modem and plugging into ye olde phone plug, swifty. Sounds like your university doesn't have any idea how to handle internet for a school. You might find out what they're charging you for it on your bursar statements. Then see if you can get a class action lawsuit against them.  :p

Yeah the Slann all died out a loooooooooooong time ago. They can hardly be counted as a real race, they're just fluff. Unless you want to go with some old old 40k data that had them as an actual part of the universe. The latest canonical interpretation is that they taught the Eldar about the warp and such, and then died out, over ten thousand years ago. But, they were lizard or frog men.

And the Tau still suck.  :p

Hallways under MS = hallways south of MS. 'Under' it on the 2d layout view.

Decimator - you can't squeeze the center stuff. That's a majorly large part of the map. And the center hive is going to be rather big as well. THIS IS WHY I DIDN'T WANT THIS MUCH WORK BEING DONE IN SEPERATE PIECES!!!!! Oh well, we'll make it work somehow. Just remember that the center areas of the map and the center hive are where most of the battle is going to take place.

Look at maps like hera, with processing and datacore. Or tanith with cargo and fusion. Or caged with shipping tunnels and ventilation. Or nothing with viaduct and the mostly unnamed area around viaduct. The center hive is almost always the biggest fight. You want it to be generally hard to hold for both teams, to lead to more epic battles.

Anyway, like I keep saying, let's get it all and piece it together and then see where we stand on questions of accessibility and balance.

Bob: What's the white circular area around the crossing next to the right hive (Lovingly dubbed by me as the "Power Regulation" Hive ^_^ )

GIANT VENTING SHAFT OF AWESOMEHUGE DOOOOOOOOOOOM! With the two catwalks crossing in the middle, the horizontal one is above the vertical. This means you have to take the long way to get to the hive, but you can take the short way out of it. I did put SOME thought into this, after all...  :p

Anyone mind me giving a hack at the hallways underneath the ms? Or should I wait for middle room to be done?

You can stake your claim on them, but I'd suggest not building them yet, as we don't know how much room you're going to have to work in. I'll try and leave ample space for them when I build out the middle areas.

At the moment it looks like the official passing around of the RMF is going to bijiy next, then I guess me again to do the middle areas, then probably we'll let decimator tack on his side. THEN Mr.Bill gets it to put on MS and those halls. At that point we should have the geometry work done, and can start on the make-it-pretty stages, and a whole new round of rmf passing about, and tweaking, and vent making, and texture work, and lighting, and so on and so on. Once we do have the map in a whole piece, there's nothing stopping us from working on multiple areas at once, as long as the designated points where they meet the next areas aren't changed at all. This could be tricky, but might work out OK.

You lucky git, living in england and all. You can actually go to real original GW stores. Even though we do have some over here, they're nowhere near me. And I don't doubt the their stores over there are much nicer.

Excellent. Just remember the elevation changes so we can make them nice gradual ramps or stairways, instead of lots of ladders. Being a dedicated Fade, I consider ladders my arch-nemeses.  ;)

Eh, we'd play with them unpainted all the time. When you're 14 and you just spent 30 dollars on a mini, you were damn well going to play with it. That 30 dollars may well represent your life savings. I actually found myself playing with a lot of half painted minis all the time. I'd get part way through one, and then get distracted by another one that looked even more super awesome.

Tyranids will hopefully be in the first expansion, they've always been pretty popular. I'd really love to see a FULL Chaos expansion. They just made a mish-mash of different Chaos bits and called it one army. I want my greater and lesser daemons of Slaanesh to meet my Eldar on the battlefield and have a hot steamy love fest of death. And come on, how can you go wrong with Nurgle? He's like the god of rest stop bathrooms that make you afraid to even breathe while you're inside them, and yet are the only bathroom for 300 miles. Plague and corruption for the win!

<rant>
And the Tau can get destroyed by a warp storm for all I care. Friendly, altruistic, advanced technology, working together, the little @#%$* don't belong in the WH40K universe at all. They just got put in to attract gibbering anime-mecha fanboys. (Not that anime or mecha are bad, but they fit WH40K like a house cat fits in the amazon jungle) At least the Necrons have a dark and tragic history. Even if the idea of metal skeletons seems sort of dumb.

Yeah, check out this layout which I posted a while back:

Just plaster in your stuff in the top right. The last room that you built, I added a corridor going out the lefthand side, with another corridor going south from it at a 90 degree angle, leading down to the large vent room (the white circle). So we're pretty close to remaining on track with this layout. Which is exactly what I wanted. The map shows basic directions, but to actually get from one point to another you have to walk around a lot more than just going in straight lines, and go through a couple rooms.

So from the large vent shaft room, I'll just make doors going out the east and south sides and let bijiy attach a hive to that. Then I'll start mapping out from the west side and towards the central rooms of dewm... maybe. This is where it starts to get tricky and where we may need to start duct taping everything together. I don't want to make a collection of  rooms too wide to fit inbetween bijiy's hive and deci's hive.

Anyway, since probably everyone else won't be sitting on the map for 3 months without doing anything, progress should be faster now.
