OK, so I'm up and running temporarily on a p3 700 with 192mb of SDRAM. NS chokes on it. I've still got my gf4 vid card, and that never had any big issues running NS before, so most likely it's the slow bus speed and ram that's giving me problems. But NS runs like crap right now. The closest I can come to decently playable framerates is by putting it in 640x480, and then it's just terrible. I feel like I can't see anything, and my crosshair takes up half the freaking screen.

So what are some things I could tweak so that I could run in at least 1024x768 without having my frames drop to 5 every time I try to go into battle?  :help:

Try watering it down as much as possible

Toss me your email or something and I can send you the lowpoly structure pack - alternatively search for that term in the ns.org custom forums, and you'll find it too. And of course gl_dither 0, gl_cull 1 and thats about it.

You could probably just search the customization forums for a good set of low-poly marines and aliens too. That will probably increase your FPS the most, as it takes major load off the CPU.

Set a very low limit on your FPS max, then it won't drop as far :D. I just remember having to set my limit at 30fps on my crapforce 2 for ns, even though technically it *could* hit 60-70, but then it would drop to like 10 after that hafaf, and it *was* steady at 40, but it would drop down to 15-20 in firefights olo. Also lower your rate(or was it cl_rate?), the less data that you let come in the less for your comp to process! Try tweaking it like your'e on a 56k, because a slow comp is still a slow comp on a phat pipe.

I didn't think lowering FPS max made a difference? I thought that it would still drop down to the same point regardless...

Also, does D3D mode run any faster than OGL? Guess I could just go test that out meself...

Not on a GF4, no. OpenGL should be best by far, if anything D3D will slow it down. Obviously your resolution needs to be 640*480 or 800*600, as that will take a huge amount of work off your CPU, but you knew that.

Lowering it made a difference for me hafaf, because it would be like "OMG TRY AND GET HIGHER!!!11" and then it would get some significant load and go "OMG LOAD OMG GET HIGHER BLARGLE!" and not only would it drop lower but major changes in fps make it impossible to play ns D:, 20 fps is *much* easier to play on than 40 to 60 to 10 to 30 to 40 to 20.

You can replace some unimportant sprites with transparents like med/ammo/cat packs, turret smoke, etc.

I run at about 50 with an integrated card..
Make sure your running in 16bit, and Options>Advanced, shut dynamic lights and high detail particle systems off
Disable high quality sounds too

my search for other low-poly packs have failed.  Everyone has leet boxes, so all they care about are high-poly packs.

oh god, they look ugly.  You can try them all first if your desperately looking for fps, but saltz and i reccomend only using the cc, pg, and ip replacements.

Oh and don't turn off high-quality sound.  it sounds absolutely HORRIBLE

Sad thing is its pretty much the prettiest lowpoly pack out there. Anyways, the Armslab, Armory, Turrets et cetera all look a bit stripped down - if you do nothing else don't replace the res nodes. You can probably live with some parts of the Arms Lab and Proto floating, and the armory lacking hump-panels.
