what happened that caused a need for the prosthetic, if you want to talk about it?

oh I'm down to talk about it, I have no problem with my issues as the many years of psychotherapy have left me firmly in control of them, and so having my mom have to have her leg amputated below the knee isn't really that big of an issue.

she was complaning of phantom pains in her foot about a year ago, had several misdiagnoses, and finally a lack of circulation in the foot was noticed, a bypass was attempted, failed, was put in again the it worked for three days then failed. they went in again, it failed again and amputation was the best decided action. She can walk around these days and has accepted the fact and decided to work on. ^_^

"Renegade" does seem like a weird name for a prosthesis, I guess  they want to be "hip"

man, I'm glad she can walk... I'm also glad it was something fixable... a friend of mine's mom is dying of cancer... I'm by no means trying to make your mom's situation seem smaller, just trying to say we should all look on the bright side of things...

my mom just lost her job, trying to look on the bright side of that too

conclusion: doctors suck, I can't believe they didn't figure out what was wrong in time to avoid resorting to amputation

No, doctors don't suck. In fact, WITHOUT that amputation, TAK's mom would have been even worse off. Since TAK says it's not that big of an issue to him, I feel I can say it openly: WITHOUT that amputation, she'd probably have snuffed it. Leg would have died and started spreading poison all throughout her bloodstream as it decayed. Again, no disrespect intended.
I myself would have bought the farm twice over if it weren't for modern medicine. Yes, doctors make errors and misdiagnoses from time to time, sometimes with disastrous outcomes. EVERYONE makes mistakes, but because of the area they work in, the mistakes that doctors make can have much direr consequences than those of, say, a farmer who accidentally spreads too much fertilizer on his field.
A doctor is not perfect, and we can't expect it from him. If we did, we wouldn't have any of 'em left: back to giving birth to your children at home and hoping that they are among the lucky 25% that reach adulthood. If they get REALLY lucky, they might even live to the ancient age of fity.

well, I don't need to be a doctor or a psychiatrist to see that the empathy gene was bred out of YOU...

let's say you were in a full body cast because you drove off a bridge that was out, and someone comes to visit you.  would you rather he say "oh my god, I can't believe they could be so negligent and not block off that broken bridge, I hate the frickin' government" -- or would you rather him say, "hey, the government rules, wth were you doing not watching where you were going?"

dunno why I need to explain this stuff to people...

of course modern medicine has like tripled our life expectancy in the last 150 or so years, but as TAK alluded to, if they had been more careful and thorough she might have been fixed up earlier.

I'd RATHER have him offer his condolences and go fetch me a bottle of water.
And heads would roll anyway if a broken bridge wasn't blocked off. I just can't take a sweeping statement like "doctor's suck", it's like saying that they do more harm than good. Do the californians say that electricity sucks? Maybe they do, but you don't see 'em saying no to it when it's available, do you?

It's always funny to see foreigners who know more about and have a better comprehension of America and the English language then those that live here...

if youd ever seen "My Fair Lady"...

youd know that the reason people who dont speak english as a primary language know the language better that those of us who are native speakers, is because we are TAUGHT the language, rather than copying the words and sounds from our parents, and not knowing the reason they are put to gether that way...

hence the reason my spanish sounds archaic and prim to most mexicans, spaniards...etc.  and why most of the students from Ghana who go to St. Gregorys University here in shawnee speek perfect Kings English
