hl2 this happens 100% with in single player only, haven't tried any of the other things for it, cept dm once, which it was fine in. hl1 this happens rarely, but restarting hl.exe fixes it;

my sound will play stupidly fast, like its on fast forward, idk why though :( i have latest sound drivers, tried it with winamp closed and it still happens. restarting hl.exe won't fix hl2 though, and its very hard to understand what the npcs are saying =( my frame rate is fine, it plays flawlessly, using 800x600 so idk :(

help pls!

edit;
indeed soundcard info is good.

Creative SB Live! Series, no old cards to test against =/ its a dell version if that matters at all.

what kind of sound hardware are you running?

Do you have problems with any other software?

Do you have an old soundcard you can test against?

found this out yesterday, its only when the hl2 engine is running itself, like, if i goto the options while its running, it will play sound normally. but if i go back to the game at all it screws up again instantly :(

Turn sound quality down to medium/low in the options?

What processor do you have?

I've heard that audigies run poorly with AMD systems, but I'm really kind of reaching at strings in the dark here as far as hardware problems go...

As near as I can tell your most likely looking at a software problem somehow related to steam, which means your best bet is probably the steampowered forums.

Does old, non-steam HL have the same problem?

Are mods effected?

If the answers are 1. yes and 2. no, then I have reached the limit to as to where I can help you in any way, then definitely look on the steampowered forums (I know its a grim fate, but make it as brief as possible and it may be bareable)
