I present to you all, a true gaming jewel. Published back in '99 by the now extinct branch of Eidos "Pumpkin Studios" is the greatest RTS game ever. Its true 3d engine is the first of its kind, and the only one executed well. You can pan, rotate, zoom, and manipulate the camera any way you want...

and the true innovation, you must design you own units. Yes thats right folks, you choose the propulsion, body, weapon, etc for maximum versatility... theres literally thousands of combinations, each of them serves its own purpose.

This lovely game is currently out of print, however, if you send me an email to jimmyfisher@gmail.com, we may be able to find a way. If youre interested just let me know, it wont cost you a dime.

and now the screenshots (note that these are all actual in-game screens...)

Those 'Design your own units' games hit the ^^ter because no one could stand how stupidly convoluted they were and how difficult and time-consuming it was.

There was a really bad game called Metal Fatigue (Or something) where you'd design units. You could give them hovercraft chassis, walking legs, treads, wheels, etc. Then you chose from about 2900 different frames, armed them with 87*10^54 redundant weapons and worthless features, and then watch the ugliest war machine ever made walk out and die instantly because you couldnt' afford to put armor on it

Besides, it doesn't look like Homeworld so I don't see how it can be better :).

My only experience with 'design your own' was Microsoft's Incredible Creatures, or Amazing Critters, or Wacky Beasties or whatever the hell it was called. I wasn't fond of it. Balancing a game where the units are made up of a wide number of variables requires a load of work that I seriously doubt they put into it. I played the demo and said 'meh'. Give me a game with limited units that fill specific roles any day. You know where your strategic planning stands with a game like that.

I remember trying to make MrBill play this game.  Don't remember if he ever did or not ^_^

Anywho, yeah it's a great game.  Had loads of hours trying to figure out what combinations are best.  Heavy tanks with a hover-commando dohickey is ftw.

Alpha Centauri had design your own units. But those were useful. ECM for advance detection etc. I used to love that game but my alien crossfire cd died   :(

Uranium, that isn't Metal Fatigue. Metal Fatigue was own though....yes you could costumize you units, but there weren't that many different ways to build them, and most modules can be used for different things. it only had 4 different types of parts. Torso, 2 arms and legs.

this is the .44 Wand, the most powerful wand in the world, so did I fire 5 or 6 fireballs? Now you got to ask yourself one question pal, do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?

Alpha Centauri is quite possibly the most complicated, time consuming, wonderful RTS game I've played.  I've spent probably 6 months of my life playing that game, it's a really good RTS.

Except for the fact that it's turn based, thereby precluding it from the Real-Time Strategy genre.  :p

LowCrawler:  dunno what version I have.  Lent it to my roomate and haven't seen it since.  I'll have to ask him for it sometime soon.

And Lego:  Sure, I'm up for some Generals whenever anyone else is.  Zero Hour or just regular?  Guess I'd better start hanging in the LM channel a bit more then :p

Regular, I didn't have enough appriciation for the game to go for the expansion.

Metal Fatigue was fun, but it really started sucking when your mechs wiped out everything on the surface, only to find that the enemy had tanks galore underground where your metals couldn't go. So you'd have to re-tool your whole army, get tanks, go down there and get crushed by their static defenses. Really sucked.
