well. i have moved into my dorm. i am liking it here so far. i hop on lunixmonster to try out the new patch, and check the connection i get. 270-300 constant ping.  :(

i am a spoiled american kid. i have never had to play with ping this high. i find myself dying to marines when i normally would have landed my 3 bites in time.

*weeps*

does anyone have any ideas at all? or am i screwed? i don't want to be ness or one of you crazy euros!

 :(

You're screwed. Our campus had a crappy wireless connection for a long time and every time it would rain or snow (constantly) my connection would shoot up into the 3000's. On lucky days, I got 300 continuously.

They upgraded and now I get around 100 standard with it shooting up to 300 on bad days. I'm at Penn State's main campus for this semester, so I'm getting crazy like 21 pings all the time. It's great.

Anyway, there's really no way around it unless there's an artificial bandwidth limitation or something being placed on it, and then you can complain to ITS, but it probably won't get anywhere.

what college, what kinda connection do they have, and what kind of proxy/firewall setup do they have?  if you find another techy kid who goes there and knows alot about the system he might be able to tweak something for you.  all i kno is at my college there wasnt enuf bandwidth to share for me to get nice pings =/

i go to university of minn - duluth campus. i think the connection is limited to 10mb/s or something. i am not too keen on computer tech, so here is a link:
http://www.d.umn.edu/itss/resnet/faq.html

already tried:

switch from autonegotiate to force 10mb/halfduplex on the ethernet adaptor

check ipconfig

Your campus has a dual 25 MBIT pipe to the internet, it seems. The local network is limited to 10 mbit, but that is still plenty. The network is slow because all your study buddies are downloading pron and the like.

Did you register to this "ResNet" that they have? It seems that 1/2 of the bandwidth is reserved to that, which might be faster if not everyone has it.

I say get your way NINJA style...

go find the fiber boxes for those peopel that you know are downloading way more than their share of the pipe and have an accident with a pair of scissors...

it will take at least a week to get them back online, and in the meantime, have fun! :D

(disclaimer - if you do anything I just suggested, you are a moron :) )
