Top-down 3rd person view sucks. Don't believe me? Ok, find the enemy in the following picture:

Can't find 'im? Hint: The barbarian is looking directly at 'im.

So yeah, you can't see him. And since you control the barbarian, the effect is that the barbarian can't see 'im either, even though he's directly in front of him, standing against a wall.

Conclusion: Diablo Top-down 3rd-person view sucks.

Technically, that isn't a "Top down" view; that's a "Three-quarters" view.

The barbarian could see him if it was true top down, unless the enemy went into a building with a roof, but then prosumably the game would cut off the roof (at least for the barbarians PoV)

Starcraft is another game with the "Three-quarters" view. Same with nearly all RTS games, as long as you leave the camera angle at its default position (some games, like Ground Control 2, allow a lot of camera control).

"Top down" games are exactly that: The camera is above the player looking down on him/her and the surroundings. Alien Swarm is an example of a "Top down" game.

I thought the "three quaters" view was know as Isometric: an attempt by the programmers to give a pseudo-3D environment without a complicated 3D engine.
