I never played the first one, but this one looks really cool, taking the 3d RTS to a new limit by the screenshots, I signed up for the beta, but i doubt i will get in lol,

MAJOR TOM!

What? You're telling me that wasn't the first thing you thought of when you saw 'ground control 2'? GAH you bunch of young ruffians!

Oh, and the game looks decent too. I've been waiting for a good RTS for a long time. Everything is just a rehash of the same old thing with no new tweaks. The same units with different graphics. Who cares!? The last really good RTS I played was Army Men RTS, and even that was the same thing, but had a good entertainment value.

I played the original Ground Control.  It did not have many of the distinctive features of an RTS, such as resource management, technology research, and unit creation, but I liked it for that very reason.  It was far more a game of tactics than of strategy, and it had immense tactical depth.  Unfortunately it was conspicuously not well balanced, and it remained that way even through its several patches.

I got the first game and the expansion pack, absolutely loved it. I tried to reinstall it for some old skool goodness, but the CD was too scratched, so I d/l the demo. When it gets released, this game will definitely be on my wish list

Very sweeet.

The original Ground Control was a revolutionary game, becuase you still had the goodness of an RTS mixed with squad-based combat.

and no reinforcements, which meant you cared about your men.

Well, one of the characters in the single player story was named Major Thomas, if I remember correctly.

For some reason I saw this thread and instantly thought of Star Control II.  Such an awesome game that I highly recommend.  It was recently made a public free download by the creators and can be found HERE.

That's definitely not a coincidence :D

Anyway, I tried for beta, but I doubt I'll get in. I never get in betas... and I don't know why. So I've taken to fabricating my 'beta test' history, telling them that I've tested about 8 other games :p

Space Oddity by David Bowie

(cue music)

Ground Control to Major Tom. Ground Control to Major Tom.
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on.
Ground Control to Major Tom, commencing countdown, engines on.
Check ignition and may God's love be with you.

This is Ground Control to Major Tom, you've really made the grade
and the papers want to know whose shirts you wear.
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare.

This is Major Tom to Ground Control, I'm stepping through the door.
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way and the stars look very different today.
For here am I sitting in a tin can, far above the world.
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do.

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles, I'm feeling very still.
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go. Tell my wife I love her very much.

She knows. Ground Control to Major Tom, your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom? Can you hear me, Major Tom?

Can you- Here am I floating round my tin can far above the Moon.
Planet Earth is blue and there's nothing I can do.

(fade music)
