It doesnt digest in your stomach, it just coats your throat with the rest of all the snot and boogers. Thats what its for, lubrication.

Umm, phlegm originates from your chest (lungs), thus why it is hard to breath when you're sick. When you swallow it, it does not go back into the lungs, and it doesn't stick to your esophagus because it's already coated. So it goes straight into your stomach.

Coughing the stuff up is more important than whether you spit it out or swallow it. Generally steaming up a bathroom with a hot shower will loosen the phlegm in your lungs.

If its important to cough up, Im sure it's as important to rid yourself of it, If anything Id suspect it's just junk cleaning your lungs and whatnot, excess crap you breath in all day

Technically phlegm is created in response to a virus or bacterial infection in the lungs, not exactly what you'd breathe in. I guess important is a relative term here. It's certainly more satisfying to spit out the crap that has been clogging you up, but it doesn't make difference to whether you get better or not.

Actually most of the time it'll just stay lurking in the throat. Its not as keen on sliding to the stomach as you'd think.
