Found it on the front of PC Gamer magazine around the 1.0 version days I think. Read up about it on the NS forums and started playing. I remember getting lost in maps for ages since there wasn`t really a good map unlike today. You had to learn them off by heart.

I started playing about March 2003. I hadn`t really gotten into online gaming before I had only played TFC really ( i only had a 56k modem) but this really hooked me. The atmosphere and the uniqueness of the aliens was great. Usually my attention span  (repeatablility) for a single game is low ( probably due to it only being single player) but NS really hooked me.

Played mainly on the TheHavenNet server (this is where my [THN] tag came from) in UK and was admin there till it closed down last year and I have been looking for another good teamplaying NS server ever since. Till I found Lunixmonster  :D.

personally I think the big thing that hooked me into NS was the accompanying story line, the manual was like a story in and of itself
MAC DRE: Cold Crest Creeper, a rapper that would dip-n-yoke quicker than he could pimp-n-smoke, flows  that hit your ears harder than Ike hit Tina. Forced to serve a Nickle but would never drop a Dime.
K.C watch out cause the Bay's down like four flats on a Cadilac.

I found it back when I first heard about a mod expo for Half-Life. I had been playing CS since beta 1, and since beta 7.1 I had begun to lose interest (I haven't even touched it since NS except two games on the LM CS server). I was really interested in the MOD's being showcased, namely NS and Polyfighter. Tried to follow Polyfighter as well, but it went the way of the dodo. Signed up immediately on the UBB boards at ns.org, began reading Humbaba's PT stories, talking about Bob's attack abilities, and commenting on concept art. Then, I basically followed it day by day (my homepage at work was the NS forums, actually surfed it so much they blocked it, but since I was in IT, I got it unblocked...) until release. PLayed it, loved it.

TBH, not to derail the thread, but since 2.0, it's been good, but not great. I think I'm finally starting to wane, but there aren't any games to replace NS...

I first became aware of NS in a promo read of it in PCgamer UK in december 2002. I was intregued about the "aliens" like reference it was said to share, and got onto the site. At the time it was 1.04, and in my opinion the best release, though it was very marine biased, it didn't have as many newbs claiming to be elite and spamming mic. From there i progressed onto the forums, and have become a regular on the customization boards, specialising in making concepts for weapons, players, maps, and other items. More recently (within the last month) i've started playing on LM more and more regularly

I found out through archi. At first I was uncertain because I was just starting to pwn in CS. But after I said that to him he relentlessly started calling me a nub and pretty much harrased the ^^ out of me.
So i downloaded beta3 and started playing. Been hooked ever since <3

Sancho did it. Back when I was active in an Action HL clan, he was in my clan's sister/arch-nemesis clan. So we played together all the time. We got a few folks together from the groups trying out random HL mods, and then we tried NS. I was basically hooked and Sancho taught me a good deal so that when I first started pubbing I didn't have to deal with a painful learning process in public. <3 Sancho. And now here I am about a year later so deeply involved in the game that I may never escape. Of course, the old mod club does yell at me every once in a while for not ever playing mods with them anymore.  :help:

Kekeke, we're still active ya know, except now its more random juarez games instead of mods.

Anyway, I can't remember where I heard about NS, but I posted on their forums for about 7 months before 1.0.

i used to always visit PHL, looking for the 'next big mod'. would dl all the silly and no so silly mods that came down the pipe. and more or less followed the path of NS being developed from teh time the first PR release came (summer of '02?).

so, basically salivated over it forever. er, then had mrs. owl download it while i was at work on halloween (i think she had the day off, or something). and the rest they say, is meeces.. i mean, history. no, wait, meeces.

My roommate, actually.  I used to play CS, then he got me into DoD - he then mentioned that this cool 'alien vs marines' mod had JUST come out (first public release ftw!), so I watched him play a bit and then got it myself.  I never learned the ins and outs and I wasn't much good at it so I didn't play it too much, then after a short hiatus got back into it... played a TON of 2.01, hours and hours at a time, then went AWOL again.

I don't remember quite when I got back into NS or became a part of the community (forums, #ns, etc) but anyway yeah, I blame my roommate :)

My buddy Backleft (an occasional visitor to the Lunixmonster now, due to my always being here) first found it at 1.something. It ran on his comp but crashed on mine, so I gave up, as I didn't feel like tracking down the issue for one game. At the time we were cal-o CS, so my group didn't really have time for another game anyway. When 2.0 came out, I tried again, but even after a full OS rebuild I was still unable to make NS work. So, more CS, DOD, and Firearms for me, but Backleft dropped from the clan at this point so he could play more NS. Steam came out, I tried again with 2.1. Still crashes all the time. NS3b1 comes out, and voila! It works! I dropped the clan to play more NS. Since then I've been playing NS as my game of choice and mostly here, except when the res-slot kicks get me so pissed off I go to *******.***, ***.**, or *****.*** for a while. I always seem to end up back here, pissed off or no, because the games are just plain better, as long as I get to finish them. I've been gone for a while some recently too 'cause I just graduated and am now an elementary school teacher, and between the full time job and the full time school (I'm going on for a Masters at the moment), I have less time than I used to.

Peace

PS- don't tell me to idle IRC to get a res-slot again, I won't. I made a promise to myself nearly 10 years ago that I wouldn't let myself get sucked back into IRC land again, as my addiction to it almost ruined my life....

I had the flu, and was extremely bored all alone in my apartment. Everybody I knew were out on parties, and I realised I needed a game to play.

So I randomly googled around for some free games, and accidentaly came upon NS .. on it's very release. Downloaded, searched for my old HL CD, and I've been fending off skulk rushes ever since.

 <3

Honestly, I miss those early 1.0 skulk rushes in ns_eclipse when we all couldn't aim and wished for a TF to save us.

except for the fact that in 1.0x a single skulk could remove a tf with fancy movement and come out unscathed

I basically just stumbled upon it on fileplanet while downloading DoD. (Needless to say, I didn't play DoD much after I found it  :D ) I remember one time when my brother had his friend over, and Officer Conspicuous (who some of u may know) was over and we convinced them to play this new mod. They were marines, and we were aliens. Now, they had never seen a skulk run up from the shadows and bite at them, nor had they seen a fade blink at them and rip them up. They were expecting aliens with guns or something... ...it was on Bast in atmospheric, and they were camping in the light under the big fan duct thingy. Officer lept out of the vent above the marine-side entrance and started biting... ...this naturally scared the crap out of them. After they had killed him, I blinked on in and made them wet their pants while I hacked 'em up.   >:D  , best introduction the NS evar!

I was walking around my area when my friend called my cell to help him get his drunken pal home. So I walked to this net cafe and grabbed the dude as I looked past his shoulder and saw a bunch of marines spawning and I thought it was pretty awesome so I asked the player what the game was...and here I am playing ns...every day... <3
