Okay fine.  There are no pirates.  But what I do bring to you is an excellent mod that was released scant few days ago called The Ship.  Just to avoid all the inevitable questions about what this newfangles 'ship' thang is, I'm posting this here and now.  To summarize exactly what it is, I'll show y'all the PHL quote:

Quote
Imagine a game in which you don't know who to trust, you don't know who may be about to kill you, in fact you don't even know who is human and who is artificial. Played online, your quarry is another human player but can you find them amongst the AI inhabitants of the Ship? Once you know who they are, find yourself a weapon but keep an eye out for security guards and cameras. If you're spotted trying to murder someone you'll be transported to the Brig and suffer a hefty fine. If you succeed in killing your quarry Mr. X will reward you with a cash prize, depending on how entertaining he found your murder. At the same time you must look after yourself, wash, sleep, eat and have fun and remember - always look over your shoulder because somewhere there's a player looking for you!

Anywho, the site is here: www.theshiponline.com

A direct download to the client can be found here, for those who like to whine that it doesn't work.  Keep in mind that this will apparently only work for americans - if you're a brit or European otherwise, just find the corresponding download link from the main page.

gameplay is quite interesting, the models are nice. it just BARELY gets over the "oh crap, this is thinly veiled HL" problem.

also, i suck terribly at it :(

It's pretty dang cool, and it looks pretty good for a first release.  When they finish fixing all the model issues, it will be GRRRREAT.

played a bit of it just now and i must admit it's pretty fun. Theres some issue with my binds so I can't run, but i guess it helps with the apearance that i'm probably an NPC. I love shooting my quarry in the back with my blunderbus when they go into a cabin to grab a weapon. I was even able to drop the satchel-purse thing right under a guy's feet and casually walk to the doorway. He turned and looked at me in a momentary pause as if to say 'why are you in here and what's this purse under me?'... And then i detonated it and took his wallet. ^___^

also... avoid the help menu like the plague. there's a bug where it wonr close once it's open, even if you disconnect. You gotta restart the game once it's up or you'll be playin practically blind.
This is going to be some kind of reunion, isn't it?

yea it was really fun, though it should be harder for you to find weapons, i mean comeon. i spawn in a room with a damn rifle and umbrella.

I love how u can change skins though, that pwns. and i like how the bots run, open doors, etc so u dont know whos real and who isnt!  too bad alot of people treat it like "HL DM" so they do nothing but hop around and all this crazy stupid stuff.

That's what I was afraid of. I dled it last night but didn't get a chance to play it. Unless they put in very good reasons not to run around and frag your targets like a madman, people are going to play it that way. Based on what you say, it seems like they're relying on the players to 'play the game properly' to which I say HAH!

People are always going to act like people, and that means finding the easiest way to win at a game. If your goal is 'kill person X' then they're going to get the biggest gun and kill that person as fast as possible, and they'll use any dirty trick the game allows to do it.

I'll have to really play it and see if it's that bad, but this was exactly what I was thinking would happen when I saw this game. A neat idea that may be ruined by short-sighted developers.

it's not as bad as it sounds bob. because you acutally have to identify your target (and therea re a ton of players/npcs to 'talk to') as welll as occasionally manage your needs, as WELL as make sure no one is stalking you, as WELL as waiting for a time to kill your quarry when NO one is watching, as WELL as finding a weapon. so yeah, there are restraints. this isn't just HLDM with new skins.

Well hopefully I can find a server to try it out on tonight. I'm really curious to see how it works. Sounds like the perfect game to enable something I've always wanted to see in a mod though: NO JUMPING AT ALL.

(I had an anti-jumping rant here, but it got so big that I'm moving it to off topic)

Even with the LM regs lots of people still play it deathmatch-like (most notable when I was crawling through a vent and some prick down at the other end just sniped people coming in). In the ship forums they said something about making it easier to identify whose who so you can boot them.

It's a pain in the ass to have people run around killing innocent people just for the hell of it. Although it doesn't happen too often, there still needs to be a greater punisment than just a cash fine. Sending someone to jail for killing an innocent would work well.

My big beef with the game is the "Quarry Changed" bit. Just when I'm about to stab my target with a needle, or shoot him with the blunderbus, somebody either leaves the server, joins the server, or kills their quarry/hunter, then all of a sudden my time going after my target has been a waste.
