It isn't actually HL2. To quote Gabe it is "textures, audio and other stuff that doesn't change."
As such I also wouldn't take the preload as a sign that its nearing the release date..

True, but it is a sign that we cab stop calling HL2 by "half-life forever".

You make it sound like they've been delaying Halflife 2 for the past 5 years.

They better not preload ^^ to my hard drive. 1 GB? That would take forever on my 56k. I just want to play NS without it downloading in the background (despite the fact that this could be good news otherwise if I didn't want to download it).

So, dev, the preload isn't required to run HL2? Is it just for people who are buying it on Steam or what?

If you've already got it preloaded, most likely all you'll need from your CD copy of HL is just a CD key. Otherwise you'll have to go through the normal install routine. That said, I'll be getting a CD copy, so that in 5 years or so when steam dies and I feel nostalgic for HL2, I can still play it.

Except that you probably won't be able to play HL2 without Steam, Bob.

Yea but you can probably install Steam even if its down, since i installed Steam and CZ on this computer (56k) i haven't had Steam running at all when im online. So it should work later if you run it in offline-mode.

I just want a hard copy of it - it kills me to think that I'm not even getting a cd, manual, and box for my fifty dollars.

I'll definitely be picking this up in the store.

Yea, otherwise CD's are pointless.
You'll still need to download stuff if you buy from steam.. engine, stuff like that

Why I do I think anarki is making stuff up :p

Well, i think you'll be able to register HL2 for steam, and then you can just use the files from the preload....so you can have it installed before actually having it :p

But yes, primarily it's for customers buying through steam.

this is the .44 Wand, the most powerful wand in the world, so did I fire 5 or 6 fireballs? Now you got to ask yourself one question pal, do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?

to heck with the preload since a hard copy of the game just makes me feel better about owning it and all

though i do believe the fact that you can preload it is promising none the less
