Could someone please help me make the area around the Q transparent. Also teaching me may help aswell.

if it were me id just crop the background off of it

download GIMP.  Open the image.  Add a transparent layer found under Layer -> Transparentcy -> Add Alpha channel.  Select by color whatever you want to make transparent, for jpegs, use enough threshold in selecting that all the colored area gets selected, not just small colored parts.  Clear current selection, leaving the entire selected area blank.  Save as gif or png or another image format the supports transparentcy.

Cool, but now I just get the little black dots out.

Use paint. Took me about 1 minute, then I saved it in the wrong format and it looked bad.
