If so... were Race X units in HL1 considerably... Combine Units?

(not literally their own units, but elite Xen forces combined with biotechnology and mechanics?)

Race X, I'm assuming you mean from Opposing Force, may or may not be considered an official part of the story. The was gearbox and not Valve, so they can pretty much choose to include it or completely ignore it. That said, I'd love to see an HL2 expansion with Corporal Shepard.  :D

maybe the g in g-man stands for gordon or something.

"G-man" is just the model name, a nickname that stuck. The real name of the character has never been divulged. And I've heard theories along the lines of 'OMGZ maybe G-man is Gordon from TEH FUTURE!!!' but I seriously doubt it. To me the G-man seems to be acting as a representative of a much greater force that is, for one reason or another, opposed to the Combine forces (maybe for domination of the whole universe, who knows?) and prefers to work from the shadows instead of come out and fight for themselves. Gordon is an example of this work. However, I seriously doubt that the G-man's people or 'employers' or whatever have humanity's best interests at heart. The liberation of Xen and of Earth from Combine control was likely just a nice side effect to them striking a blow at their Combine enemies. I get the feeling that if the G-man's side ever found their desires opposing those of humanity, they wouldn't hesitate to turn around and start attacking us. That could make for a very interesting game somewhere down the line...

well then.  Now I need to find something else to climb on Bob's back about.  Perhaps the south hive?
Climb on if you wish. I got too involved in too many things all at once (mapping, ns pt, zp pt, forum mod, cal practice, having a job, not ignoring woman all day, etc.) and then hl2 dropped on top and the whole pile crumbled. I've been pretty much out of everything for a while now. I'm trying to get involved in things again... slooooowly this time so I don't get overextended.

Many apologies for not mapping all the stuff I promised to map.  :(

Some misinformation there though. The combine aren't also known as the synth. The synth are another race that the combine has already absorbed. It was from them that they got the striders, the gunships, and the odd creatures you briefly see in your tour of the citadel. The only actual member of the combine race that you see is on the view screen at the end (or the very beginning during the teleport mishap). You can noclip out to where he sits in a little dark room and get a better look at the model. Little grub with stubby arms. If you hit him, he'll try and whack you back with his little arms.  :D

There is one also when you use the binoculars (sp?) in one of the houses the Combine are in during Highway 17.

And if you noclip across to where the binoculars are looking, you find that the person G-man is talking to is Col. Cubbage. Maybe telling him that Gordon was on the way?

Hrmm... map... vent shaft that I've been meaning to work on for a month now... hrmmmm.

Did I mention that aligning textures around pipes is probably the thing I hate most in the world about mapping? (And this vent shaft involves a lot of giant pipes that have to be textured outside and inside?) So yeah, every time I go to work on it I kind of... suddenly think of something else I've got to do.  :help:

General / How To Skulk Better!
« on: November 04, 2004, 03:33:15 PM »
If you absolutely must cross open ground to get to a marine, vary your path as much as possible.

Actually, before you do that, ask yourself "do I HAVE to run out in the open?" Too often I see people charging marines for no good reason whatsoever. If they're in an open room with nothing in it, why charge them? They're not presenting a threat there. Get inbetween them and the nearest important objective (hive, RT, empty res node, siege spot, whatever) and get into a good ambush spot. If at all possible, let them come to you. And a marine building a res node is not an immediate threat. Which is better, to let him build the node, then kill him when he rounds the corner, then go eat down the node before it even earns back its cost, or to rush at him, die, and let the node stay up unattacked for a few minutes?

Anyway, back to that open ground. Use any and all available cover, even the tiniest bit of pipe or whatever, to get as close as possible. Then if you have to charge, charge, but do it in a randomly zig-zagging pattern. Don't strafe in one direction too long. If you can bhop, do that, but don't even do that too long because it's predictable.

When you do manage to close that gap, stick to the floor. It's your best friend when actually attacking. The instinct (and I'm guilty of this too much myself) is to bounce around madly while biting. There are a few problems with this. One, it brings you right up in front of the marine's gun, taking away your vertical advantage. It's harder to aim down and track a target, so try and make him do that. Two, it can throw off your own aim when you bounce like crazy. And three, it's harder to adjust your attack angle. On the floor you remain in control, you can change direction instantly. If you're in midair and that marine jumps away from you, there's nothing you can do until you hit the ground again. You can't twist and immediately follow him in the air, you just have to finish your jump arc. This is often where skulks get killed, is in midair while bouncy-attacking.

Edit: A radiator reduces the damage of lava and natural gas pockets. That's why you're dying. With a better radiator, you'll survive the blasts.

And I'd almost enjoy that game if it weren't for the fact that even with $100,000 hull and radiator, a gas pocket still kills me in one friggin' hit.

The sociological ramifications of this site are enough to scare me into closing it before I start thinking too deeply about it. The silent moral commentary on society of the guy who keeps getting as far as "PUSS" and then has his letters fly away as he moves in the "Y" is both deep and disturbing on many levels. What does this tell us about the person trying to make the word? And what does it tell us about his or her anonymous moral judge? So many questions...

General / Pancaking, The Definitive Guide
« on: October 26, 2004, 08:48:35 AM »
Bear in mind that avoiding shots is the main way for aliens to survive. No one complains when skulks leap around or fades blink around in order to make themselves hard to hit. We have cut off the lerk's main mode of attack by classing everything under the heading of 'pancaking' which is rather unfair to the poor lerk.

Did you know that a basic lerk can be taken out by 10 pistol shots, or 20 lmg shots? A single shotgun blast will down a lerk as well. The lerk is barely better armored than a base skulk. So avoiding shots is about all he has going for him. I think it's better to err in the lerk's favor in this case. It's hard to do any avoidance on the server without getting some accusations of pancaking. And like Adj pointed out, actual pancaking is a lot more than just angling your flight up and down to avoid dying.

I havn't had any problems with my Favorites list in Steam, but one thing that has been bugging me recently is how my filter is automatically switched to Counterstrike: Source if I leave it on normal Counterstrike when I close the program. I'm sure they do this so people with CS:S don't think they got ripped off when they go to play 'CS', but I've yet to buy any of the deals yet. Nothing major, but annoying enough to mention.

I think it's just extremely subtle (yet persistent) marketing.

Hmm... I had the $100,000 and a gas pocket just took me to very low hull integrity. With the top hull, it takes 2 gas pockets to die. One takes you down to just below half. But when you are that far into the game, you generally have a bunch of items anyways, like hull repair nanobots.

That was the sad part. I was loaded down with extra fuel, hull repair nanites, dynamite, transporters to get back to the surface and all those bells and whistles. Drill down to about 5000ish feet somewhere and then BOOM. Dead. For no reason. If the game didn't require so much effort to GET to that freaking point, it wouldn't be so bad.

Yeah I do. And by the by, someone beat the game on guest/guest, so it's started over with basic equipment. No more fun to be had there.

And I'd almost enjoy that game if it weren't for the fact that even with $100,000 hull and radiator, a gas pocket still kills me in one friggin' hit. I swore last time I wouldn't waste my time on it again, and then here today I found myself doing it once again, and BAM, same stupid thing happens. This game could almost be great, but it has some idiotic flaws. One hit kills that are unavoidable... that's classy.

That motherload game is evil. I get down to 6000 feet or so and suddenly hit a random spot of dirt that makes me explode for NO REASON!!!

However, I did find a neat trick. You don't have to have an account to save off and build up a good game. Just enter the account guest/guest and it will load up a game with a lot of money and all the 2nd best equipment. You can dig down and start mining rubies, emeralds, and diamonds immediately and build your way up to the best equipment, and then dig down past 6000 feet for a surprise...

Are you applying hint brushes with much malice? Couldn't hurt. And as far as officialness, I know tyr has mentioned he'd like to get a copy of this for PTing, but that all depends on when PB decides it's done enough to be PTed (and when he wants to go through the pain of having the PTs rip it apart and jump the hoops that maps contending for official status have to jump through).

This latest version is very sexy. Such sharp and clean lines, such nice little details. I really can't wait til you get those last few FPS choking annoyances ironed out. This map only gets better with each build.  :D
