Off Topic / Hey Sancho
« on: February 20, 2004, 09:15:01 AM »
Hey Sancho! I saw you browsing the forums, and I realized that you need an avatar. So I took it upon myself to search for one for you. I went to google image search and searched for 'sancho'. And look at the first image! I think, quite clearly, that this must be your avatar. It's like fate has ordained it. All you need to do is copy the thumbnail and maybe resize it a wee bit, and you've got a winner. EH?

(no, I'm not bored with nothing to do at work, why do you ask?)

General / 3.0 Balance Ideas And Suggestions
« on: February 17, 2004, 02:25:02 PM »
This may be workable and it may be a mess, but it's worth trying.

The problem is easy to see. We all have ideas about how 3.0 should be balanced, and suggestions for improvements. Go to the public beta forum, however, and no one will hear your ideas except for a bunch of other players. The ideas & suggestion forums are even worse. A good idea will get lost in the mountains of silly 'awps for onos' ideas. Is there any way around this? Possibly.

We can use the might of the LM community. The devs, I believe, do want feedback. They just don't want to wade through the reams of whiny posts to find anything useful. So we make it easy on them. We have a community here with dozens of almost daily players, plus many more occasional players. Why don't we hash out all of our ideas about the balance issues in 3.0 and write them down clearly and concisely in one document? Then we get someone that the dev team wouldn't dismiss, like a PT, (cough LB cough) to email that document to them. It would surely have a lot more impact than posting in the forums, and it would be more useful feedback for the devs. If it's received well enough, we can keep it up with each successive beta until 3.0 goes final.

Thoughts, agreement, flames, offers to bear my children?

Off Topic / Happy Birthday Diablus
« on: February 09, 2004, 12:50:35 PM »
I saw people turning hoots's bday thread into Diablus's birthday thread, and we just can't have that. Everyone should get their own birthday thread!!! So, happy birthday DIABLUS! WooWOO!

Off Topic / Discuss Your Silly Keyboard Config Here
« on: January 28, 2004, 02:30:25 PM »
To keep from derailment in other threads, here you go.

I use edsf, for it is the key config of winners.
R reloads, because it should. Mouse5 and B are voice spam buttons. Mouse4 and A are lastinv buttons for killer fading and skulking. T is chat, Y is team chat. Q is the all important press-it-as-fast-as-you-can flashlight button. And Z is use. Z is always use in every fps I ever play. I'm not sure why.

Those are the only really important keys. Oh, and UIOP are bound to DC, SC, OC, and MC because sometimes you need a quick chamber, and because for some reason each of those keys reminds me of each chamber easily enough that I don't forget which is which.

Off Topic / The Inevitable Post Your Picture Thread
« on: January 27, 2004, 10:47:54 PM »
The first rule of the post-yer-pic thread is YOU DO NOT SPAM THE THREAD. (posting anything not including a picture of yourself will anger the gods)

Yep. What can I say? The topic that needs no introduction.

Off Topic / The Amazing 'post Your Desktop' Thread
« on: January 18, 2004, 01:08:10 AM »
Post your desktop. There's not much I can add to that. If it wasn't 2 AM and I was feeling more witty, I'm sure I could make this more interesting. But, such is life.

Here it is, linked instead of just posted because the image is quite huge and I didn't want to totally mess up the thread for everyone else reading it. I could have shrunk it, but I didn't want to lose the intricate details. ; )

Behold, mortals

Yes, everything on there does what it looks like it does. If anyone can beat that for ultimate coolness of desktop, I will be quite surprised. But I am ready for the challenge!

Off Topic / Explain Your Name
« on: January 14, 2004, 12:41:53 PM »
Why do you play under the name that you play under? Is it of any special significance or did you just pick at random while staring at the ceiling and drooling on yourself? Explain!

My name was chosen in an effort to be anti-l33t. It's supposed to be the opposite of names like Xx$il3nt$n|p3r666xX. Because none of us can stand those people, and I'm just doing my part for humanity. Otherwise, there's no real significance to it. My name's not Bob, and I've never held the position of sanitation engineer.

And the justifying your existence part is optional. Except for you, Lito. Why do you exist? (Grimm is exempt from this part, as he does not exist)

General / Your Gamma Settings?
« on: January 13, 2004, 04:59:21 PM »
I'm trying to find the perfect gamma setting and I thought I'd ask where everyone else had their own set. It seems like you can either set it lower, so that the maps look awesome and the game is more atmospheric, but you can't see what's going on in half the map, or set it high and bleach everything out -- effectively destroying the hard efforts that the game goes to in using alternating areas of darkness and light to create atmosphere.

That sentence was too long.

Anyway, at the moment I've got it set lower so that things look good. But places like MS on lost are too dark to even aim in at this setting. Putting it higher makes bright maps like tanith look pretty washed out. Where's the happy medium? What do YOU use?

Edited for proper preposition usage. : )

Off Topic / How Old Are You?
« on: January 05, 2004, 09:57:33 PM »
Idle curiosity has got me wondering if I'm spending all day playing games with a bunch of five year olds. So here's a pointless topic: How old are you?

I'm 24, which probably qualifies as ancient around here. (Although thankfully I believe niteowl is older, whew) I just want to know if these fierce grizzled marine comms that are screaming at me to rip apart that onos with one pistol clip and a pocket knife are actually chipper grade schoolers. So come on, quit hiding behind your anonymity. Speak!

General / Phase Madness
« on: January 05, 2004, 11:08:16 AM »
This is what happens when it's midmorning on a monday and no one's playing on LM... people get a little crazy and they start to phase farm:

My god, it's full of phases...

Note the marine phasing from the PG two feet away

Yeah it was stupid, but sometimes you just can't help it. The noise of all those phases humming at once was terrible. If it hadn't been for my girl sleeping in the same room, I would have had to take off the headphones and crank up the bass on the speakers to rattle that walls.

Now, marines, next time I say PHASE TO COMPUTER LAB NOW NOW NOW, maybe you'll get the point!

General / The Bonsaibase
« on: January 03, 2004, 08:54:12 PM »
I see several comms lately using the 'bonsaibase' strategy, namely building a TF, electrifying it, and then building everything around that one TF to avoid skulks chewing the base up while the marines are out. I'm wondering what others think of this idea. I don't particularly mind it when it's used just to protect a few really important things. Say, the IPs. The problem I have with it is when everything gets crammed into one teeeeeeeny space and I end up having to duck jump over half the base just to get to the armory, only to get telefragged because the comm built another IP right next to said armory.

When I comm, I usually tend to build things far apart -- especially the armory away from the IPs -- because I know how aggravating it can be negotiating and defending a base that's designed to fit in a closet. I rely on a turret or two (mostly for the 'sentry firing' warning) and maybe a single base guard for base defense and don't mess with any tricky electrified TF defending everything strategy. What do others think? Good strategy or horrible annoyance?

General / The Ultimate Gorge Rush
« on: December 31, 2003, 08:04:14 PM »
It's not exactly a rush per se, but the title fit. Just don't be too critical of terminology, is what I'm saying. So it was 3 on 3 in hera, then 3 on 4, then 2 on 4. The aliens were very quick about capping res and my foolish attempt to reloc to hera reception was quickly smashed. Then the WoL and BoD (balls of dewm?) started showing up in droves. We actually got as far as knifing the RT at hera reception once, and that was it. Then the gorges descended in a mad building rage and well... here you go:

The horrid towers of death going up

Note the gorge decling to use the lift and jumping off the top of his tower instead.

And a spec shot just after I was bilebombed out of my chair, webbed in place, and then loogied to death.

What can I say but gg gorge. The game was lost from about two minutes in but at least they made it amusing for us!

(and sorry if this is the wrong forum for this sort of thing and/or you don't abide this sort of screenshot spam here)

Edited for speeling
