you also forgot the other 8 months of Beta testing by vets who will complain if the game doesnt fit their "vision" of how a game should be played. And that "vision" being unatmospheric utter crap team competative DM that NS is currently.

Hit the nail on the head :-/

From what nemesis said their thinking of going back to the "soul" of NS but i doubt it'll go back to what it was when it was released, that is continuing to listen to all the vet players as far as gameplay goes.

I wonder if the science will ever evolve to a point where it will be exploited to torture people by shooting lasers and stuff into their brains to cause different responses.  Man what a nightmare that would be, can't even escape the pain when unconcious :o.

Come to think of it that reminds me of a part in a "anime matrix DVD" that i forgot what its called but it had a short on humans strapped to the power grid or whatever and a laser shooting into their brains making them laugh, then cry and writhe... it was kind of disturbing...

NS:Source will be their renewal... or could be, depends.

agreed, sounds like they want to release a stripped down version to play before adding more stuff incrementally... so maybe we'll see a version by the end of the year hopefully.

The day I stop using nocd cracks is the day publishers quit putting buggy, slow, and bureaucratic anti-piracy checks on software I have legally bought.

... can we FINALLY, PLEASE move beyond mindless killing and arcade-like HL mods coverted to source?

Okay, let me be more specific.

This game looks great, hdr is neat but nothing major though in this incarnation IMO, levels look awesome visually and look realistic.

BUT

I cannot play this game for more than maybe 15 minutes at a time... why?  Because its like counterstrike but with WWII weapons and more recoil.  Maybe its partly the small levels converted to source that were originally built with HL engine in mind, but people die WAY to often.  Even on a 24 player server i just get impatient with finding a far away sniper spot and manage to kill somebody then another sniper or MGer mowing you down from a distance.  It seems the average lifespan of a player is maybe 30-45 seconds if that.  Why do these games have to be SO DAMN FAST... why can't they slow it down with bigger levels and make it so that its actually slow paced house to house fighting like it would have been?

Although it looks like there is a small element of teamplay, there is still little if any really needed to take control of flag spots.  That's another thing, capturing flag spots is WAY to easy... you should at least have to hold that area for a while with a couple of teamates rather than one or two people just rushing the points and winning in 40 seconds!

I understand some of the problem is just pub play and in a clan scene playing with people you know and working together would probably be better, but i really don't think this game fosters teamplay in the average pub other than needing two people to capture a flag in an area.

I guess i'm just getting sick and tired of the ultra fast paced slaughter games and looking for something more involved than dying constantly.

Anybody else feel that way?

Valve's track record isn't that great...

Well as far as making their games "easier to pickup".  Like with the hints that popup on weapons and such and what things are in the level etc...

Yea nemesis said they'll go back to the "soul" of NS, i doubt it will ever be what it was but we'll hafta see.

This sums up my feelings pretty clearly about the whole situation on the readroom forums (a few days before the interview was released)

I know the reason, and trust me, it's perfectly benign and appropriate. Don't worry about it; when The Readyroom comes back you'll know too.

That's all the community ever hears is "something very exciting is coming!" or "we can't tell you what it is yet, but trust us it will be worth it". Just keep dangling the carrot then dragging it on for months and months and angering fans to leave the game.

It's pretty unprofessional for UWE to keep missing these dates when they promise them, seeing as how they have 2-3 permanent employees. What kind of confidence would that give a potential investor giving a large amount of money for people who can't even keep a simple deadline? Or is this just part of the "blue ocean" business paradise that charlie speaks so fondly of?

I joined as a constie about a week before the announcement of constie testing. The Forums go down. I didn't have time to add my Steam ID before they did and now I'm missing out on glorious Constie testing.

Did you all forget that you were in the middle of a public (constie) beta test? I know the consties arn't essential to the testing (and more of a privledge) but at least try to communicate a little to the community to have a place to talk about it. Maybe you could have created a thread here saying "constie 3.1 suggestions" or something small like that. Either give us a way to give suggestions\improvments or cancel the test entirely. Just don't leave us in the dark for nearing two months. And although you were nicer about it crispy you have the same complaint. So i'm not the only one who thinks the constie tests matter.

Now lets look at how the original vision\game for NS has changed almost COMPLETELY. What ever happened to the story of the game, the dark corridors, the much slower and appropriate gameplay? Whatever happened to listening to the "newbies" of the game, rather than the elite of the game that want it to turn it into their own CS mod. Make this hallway wider, these ridges slow my walking down so we need to make them flat and smooth etc etc... It seems like now whenever you try to play a game with skilled people its nothing but a clan match. What's the point of playing a game where a whole group of amazingly skilled marines just sit in the hive spawn camping until they can get the guns to finish it.

How is it that instead of fostering gameplay that rewards players for new strategies, you keep changing numbers here and there trying to find a true balance that will never be accomplished when it really comes down to which team has the better skill stack. That is a whole 'nother issue, one of the main reasons i havn't been playing ns... but maybe that is partly the community as a whole to blame.

This game should not be entirely based on skill and individual accomplishments, it should be based on one whole team against another whole team. The individual should not be able to keep an entire alien team at bay. I could go on forever but it really doesn't matter because the clanners say its all good.

Sometimes it seems flayra should have stuck with what he had going in the early versions and just fix the bugs and work from there. This game is nothing novel anymore, its become CS in space with buildings, and all the ***hole players that come with it. But don't worry, i'm sure that mirage called nexus will be appearing any time now and solve all of the games problems...

Stop complaining. You don't have a right to play NS.

Isn't it just typical this is the response you get when you have some well thought out issues and complaints?  Sometimes i wish UWE would take at least a few hints from valve and make things more accessible and centered around new people rather than listening to vets the whole time.

the dairy queen coffee lawsuit was valid, the location in question had been warned several times by health inspectors to lower their temperatures but the DQ ignored them. the lady only sued after DQ failed to assit her in paying for ambulance fees, hospital fees and reconstructive surgery. she had third degree burns covering 95% of her upper legs and most of the skin on her fore-upper legs had been burnt off. she had to be hospitalized for over two weeks and then had to go through rehab and reconstructive surgery because large chunks of her leg had to be removed due to the burns.
also, liquids at 195F-200F in a styrofoam cup tend to make the cup unstable

I thought it was McDonalds... or was there another incident?

Yea i hear people complain about suing for spilling coffee case a lot but don't know the whole story.  Although i agree there are plenty of frivolous lawsuits out there (not talking about bush's law that limits when you can call a class action lawsuit against a corporation for making you sick, or suing for millions... gg big business)

Gotta love censorship.  Don't want people to get ideas in their heads that don't fit well into your world view.  And seriously, these books wern't even that bad?  I was expecting bans on communist writings and the like (because learning about the rest of the world is bad).  Seriously, book burning is the highest form of ignorance.

Your best bet of playing NS is not playing LM sad.gif

Not enough of us here pub NS enough to propagate a good server with regulars, and with the current total stoppage of NS growth there is never any new players on the server to drag the old regs back in. A bunch of us have either moved on to other servers or compeditive play... A good bet would be trying the FR31 server, as I know a few LM regs have switched over to there. Also in the compeditive off season a few of us will have more time for pubbing.

Yea my NS time has dropped to around once a week instead of everyday :D.  Been playing dystopia.  A lot of regulars will probably be back again once 3.1 gets released... at least for a little while.  I hope theirs news on progess of the hl2 port.

Come to think of it... i really didn't mean that when i posted it (i must have been enthusiastic about ns then).  I honestly don't think 3.1 is going to do anything other than spur activity maybe for a few weeks then it will plummet again.

Yea that's exactly right fewl, their just adding glitter to an increasingly repetitive skill fest.  Honestly after playing 3.1 a few games it is still the same old game, same patterns, same things that have been done a million times before over and over.

I would really like to see the game slow down to what it used to be and bring back the theme of the game.

The game is continuously (sp) added to with new features almost every version... maybe balance or stuff like in 3.1... it all makes some fresh gameplay.

General / Why the SourceForts server quite honestly sucks
« on: August 29, 2005, 12:42:00 AM »
I'm really not liking sourceforts in its current state.

It's just the idea of building the most impenatrable fortress so its a very slim chance you'll ever get to the other persons flag, much less bring it back.  Not very fun at all IMO.

Now if there was something that encouraged teamwork like an much improved audio codec and high voice quality, along with better teamplay game mechanics... then that might be a different issue.

For instance, code in a system like NS 3.1 is using that has "follow me" or "over here" icons above their head and a audible alert so others know what to do.  Right now its just normal deathmatch with some laggy physboxs and low fps.

[edit] for the record, I think NS on the HL engine is pretty much dead... Sure we'll see a revival with 3.1 and the eventual my games move if that ever happens, but as it stands most of the players who made this game what it is have moved on and don't really want a revival. They are done playing with this game. I don't think NS will ever be quite what it once was again, but I'll still be sticking around, because this is the comunity that made me, and I have nothing better to do.

Even the month revival after 3.1 and my games its still going to be a dead mod.  IMO 3.1 really isn't to terribly great, its got some "gee whiz" neat features but nothing that really radically changes the mod and goes back to the same patterns that we play now.

I am just hoping the eventual move to source will be able to keep it basically the same at least initially.  But it still won't be the same as the HL NS, but i'm sure it will still be good.  I am really hoping that with the new engine the dev team can somehow get the story and atmosphere back into the game either through better gameplay mechanics or some sort of radical addition... like story mode or something.
