General / What Server Would You Like?

lol Diablus, you should have seen the FAMAS in pre-2.6 builds. You could get 4 headshots in 10 shots at a distance of 50 meters. Now that was a whoregun  :D . For some reason people always whined about the AUG with its 41 round clip and scope, but the funny thing was that you didn't need a scope for the famas.

I haven't played it recently, but I just remember the AK-47 was the definitive whoregun of 2.6. I believe the mod team changed that though.

If you are trying to be a realism stifler, you could make a more convincing argument ragging on the other 99% of gameplay that makes NS unrealistic.

Because gameplay > realism, and oftentimes jumping can add a whole new level to even a supposedly realistic game.

I used to be a hardcore FireArms clanner back in the day, until 2.6 ruined it.  :(

I'd still be willing to load it up and give it another go.

After visiting the average CS pub and the average NS pub, I can honestly say the CS pub was more entertaining. For one thing, the actions of your teammates in CS don't hurt your ability to play, so I can still have fun with a team full of idiots, something that I couldn't say about NS.

The smacktard ratio is also about the same I find, but you can easily mute them in both games. The only problem is that in NS they can cause gameplay damage, and in CS pretty much the only thing they can do is TK, which usually ends in them getting slayed by a plugin anyways.

And I hate the shield. Luckily it has been banned by CAL, so I don't have to put up with it in scrims. But there are still ways to exploit so a player is almost invincible. Even if it is fixes, I'm not sure they will allow it in CAL because the whole concept seems counter-intuitive.

General / What About The Marines?

rad4Christ,Jun 12 2004, 03:46 AM] I like what I'm reading, just love to see it sometimes ingame :p.

Seriously, good stuff, but also, what makes a good marine is someone who has fun with it too. I know there are some I stop giving ammo/meds to sometimes because their skills are kinda making it not-so-fun for others, or the ones cursing out the whole team. The same way there are some commanders I don't like, even though they win, and are good commanders, they don't make it fun.
There is a difference between "good" marines, and "fun" marines.

The shotgun.... well.... Its not anti tank weapon 1v1 like the HMG is (125 +10 pistol shots with lvl 3 (or mabye even 2) kills an onos. I think its pretty fair. It should be upped 2-5 resources for 1 since its at defualt armory. (to encourage the use of GL's)

I see more HA trains with all shotguns and a few HMGS then GL mixed with HMGs Current B4.
Actually the pellets have the exact same spread every shot. Try shooting a hive or a resource node and notice the blood spurts. Bullet decals do NOT represent where the pellets land.

If you do perform this test, you will notice that 3-4 pellets are grouped slightly to the right and above of your crosshair. I've managed to make a crosshair that shows where this pellet group is so I can snipe skulks from medium distance with the shotgun.

However, once I got used to knowing the location of the small group, I went back to normal crosshairs because that is where the general center of the circle of pellets lands (and sometimes it screwed up closerange fights), but I can still semi-snipe skulks unexpected ranges if I need to.

EDIT: However, the HMG is still the all purpose anti-alien weapon, as it should be. In pretty much any situation I would prefer a HMG over a shotgun in almost every situation.

On that note, 5 bucks says eR won the marine round on eclipse as well.

You owe me five bucks.

And although it doesn't involve turrets, technically that was a very low-pressure strat that just locked down very easy areas with good players until you were overteched out the wazoo.

But when you watch this demo, keep in mind of the 80 ping difference. This made it extremely hard to attack, and even harder to try to pressure their hive with no higher tech.

Quote
Oh yeah, all new comms should do a 2 Hive lockdown with leet marines...
How exactly is that a two hive lockdown? We only had a PG up to maintenance once, and they destroyed that pretty quickly. No kind of static defense whatsoever.

Quote
And why does a leet team like eR do vent DCs? Do they never learn?
Those DCs almost broke us twice.... What exactly are the disadvantages of putting your DCs there? Seeing as only in the end we came near their hive, it would have been pretty useless if they just stuck them up under the hive.

I know its a clan match, but I think this is a decent demo to teach the basics.

Many comms make the fatal mistake of not pressuring. This is a side effect of building turrets everywhere, turtling, etc.

Esuna, the problem is when a game that promises certain features doesn't deliver, and it cost $$$.

If I bought the game and I found that I couldn't play online, I'd be a little teed off too. Just like people would be in an uproar if CZ was nothing more than half-life singleplayer with replaced weapons and models.

That being said, I love Counter-Strike. Counter-Strike pubbing gives a degree of satisfaction that NS pubbing can't. I am in no way a CS hater, and I don't mindlessly generalize CS players and flame them wherever possible.

If I bought CZ, I would flame valve as well. You can't guarantee quality, but there are some features that are minimal, like working servers. Valve is only hurting themselves when they have crap release like this. All the drama that is created does server a purpose, and the angry mob that bought CZ first will brew up a storm and ultimately lessen whats left of Valve's reputation.

And deservedly so.

General / Spawncamping
« on: March 21, 2004, 04:34:34 PM »
The only argument I can think of AGAINST spawnkilling is that it is unfun. Yes, being killed as soon as you spawn sucks, but guess whos fault it is that the marines were able to get in that position. Just like its the marines fault if the aliens rush the IPs.

There are other aspects of the game that aren't fun either though. Getting devoured isn't fun, getting sieged isn't fun, but they're all part of the game.

We just need to accept NS how it is and we can't start making up arbitrary rules. Else we'll get something like TFC where you can get banned on some servers for things like "chasing" and playing certain classes.

Lito you forgot one.

2 marines are in the hive while the rest of the team caps RTs and such. If they shoot the hive with more than a few bullets, than the next spawner will easily kill the marine. Also eventually they will run out of ammo, and their team will have accomplished less than if they conserved their ammo for spawning skulks.

Spawncamping? Yes. Unjust spawncamping? No.

If I was a marine pressuring the hive, why would I want to accomplish less? Its definetly not frag whoring, because wile I keep the aliens contained, my teammates cap RTs and secure our way to victory.

In such a case where victory is already established, and the opportunity to kill the hive presents itself, then spawncamping becomes unjust.

I was implying vanilla marines, which I thought I made fairly obvious.

I even made the concession that devouring la-lmg marines is okay if a whole group is shooting you.

But devouring a lone vanilla marine when you have the opportunity to gore him makes no sense.

a public server can have varying degrees of skill. having a tactic like spawncamping allowed on a public server will make a team with one or two uber players, win the game for the rines. whereas if spawncamping ism't allowed, more strategy and teamplay will come into the formula. leading to a greater range of the player base having fun. as opposed to 2 elite clanners.

it's MORE likely that one team will have elite players than both, simple due to the scarcity of elite players (kind of part of the definition, really). now ina  scrim, ti's fine, there is enough organization, and, hopefully, fairly close skills levels for spawncamping to not have a negative effect.

the the fact remains that on a server that can have HUGE ranges in skill, using a tactic that MAGNIFIES skill over strategy will lead to a great number of the public players to become dissatisfied with the gameplay.
It doesn't take an elite player to combat spawncamping. It either requires a little forethought or quick thinking on the skulks side. Don't necessarily try to attack the marine, just run down his ammo for the next skulk to spawn. Its not that hard depending on how close or far you spawn from the marine.
