Okay, I guess it's my turn to air a little dirty laundry now.

As some of you may or may not know, I was banned four seperate times here, each for reasons which I thought were a bit laughable.

First time I got banned was for "hacking". I was smurfing and the entire alien team thought I was cheating so I got banned right away. No problem, I posted in the unban forums and got unbanned when they realized it was me.

Second time I got banned was for "lying". LB asked me if we had motion tracking, I said no (we didn't), 6-10 minutes later he joined our team and saw we did and I got banned. I think it was for a few days.

Third time I got banned was for "bad attitude". I remember when the admins llamaed a few players and proceeded to make fun of him. I said something to the extent of "just kick him, humiliating is bad form".  U235 said that scored a few negative points in the admins book. Other than that I wasn't really given any reason, but I guessed it was because I rarely chatted in game, and people thought I was anti-social or ignoring them or something. I also yelled at my marines when I commanded, but I thought that was generally accepted.

Final ban was for "spawncamping". If you watch the demo of me now, then yes, it is breaking the rules. But the funny thing was, the rules were updated right after my ban from "spawncamping" to "shooting anything in the hive" (technically, the skulks were out of the hive when they were rushing me anyways, but meh). At that time everyone was a little edgy about spawncamping so I made extra sure I wasn't, but mehx2.

I was banned for four totally seperate things on four seperate occasions, which is a bit curious. You'd think there would be some kind of pattern to my bad behaviour instead of violating each rule once.

Seemingly because that's one of the major issues. I can't see why, a good player is noticeably better when mp_bs is on, and there are plently of servers without BS.

It's not because it makes that one player better, but it makes many of the other players worse.

For instance, I can bunnyhop with +3jump script or mousewheel, favoring the +3jump script because it was more comfortable. Now, with bs_1, many people who only used +3jump scripts can't bhop at all, while I still can with mousewheel. This leaves me at a considerable advantage. I don't really consider either more unfair than the other, since everyone always has access to both (actually, 100% of people can use scripts, while probably slightly less don't have mouse wheels for one reason or another).

Same thing with a pistol script, which I find interfering and unnecessary. I tried a 2 fire script (shoots once on mouse press, second on release) and I end up shooting when I don't want to, and I like to keep the pistol manual because I can fire more accurately and almost hit the cap if the opportunity arises. I think pistol scripts are so cumbersome that they are really not worth learning, and ultimately you'll be benefited more than firing the pistol manually.

I guess personally blockscripts benefit me, but I still think they spread disinformation and rumours that hurt the community in general. Like someone said, the only reason to legitametly block scripts is to get rid of the scripts who exploit engine bugs, like the wiggle-walking scripts or infi-leap scripts (Bunnyhopping is a feature and not an engine bug now by the way).

Considering +3jumps and pistol scripts are the only scripts really being affected, I don't really see a reason to broaden the discussion to other scripts. Unless somebody else wants to bring one up :)

This forum is for HLDM2, if someone is going to rant, or rave about weapon(s) they have every right to. In forums you need to gain seniority and respect, joining the steam forums and making your first post about a rant on the Magnum would only cause the community to laugh at your ass and say "go get experience newb"

Now posting in here has 2 reasons.

1. You can vent and expect not to be flamed or crticized in a negative manner

2. Possibly someone who has some type of connection, or is active in the steam forums that can post this idea in which the community would look at it from a different point of view and will be up for the change.

Well, 1, you'll almost always be critisized because it is almost guaranteed there will be someone with a different opinion, and 2, you could just post it on the steam forums yourself.

The steamed forums have no sense of seniority because it is not a community based forums. There is no ranking system, and people there are just as likely to dismiss an admins post as a post by a person who registered yesterday. There are actually about 5 "rant threads" in the forums, all with support or opposition. Posting your opinion there might actually succeed in accomplishing something.

But the focus of my post was that it's not as bad as you think. Yeah it sucks being killed in one shot, but it can also be countered. And if someone is camping the magnum, then just stay away or be sneaky until he dies. It's annoying, but not game-breaking.

And no, even the magnum does not shoot through anything.

Like lolfigher said, you have to take it for what it is. No use whining about it here, just have to adapt until valve makes the nerf or whatever.

If you spend your time playing the game than you will know the best way to counter a magnum is to get a magnum, and generally thats not too hard.

It doesn't kill gameplay, it just focuses a certain aspect of the game.

Scoreboard+netgraph script. Innocent and convenient, no? It gives the user the ADVANTAGE of being able to get that info faster than one who does not have this script. Is the advantage trivial? hell yes. Is it still and advantage? yep.
A convenience is an advantage.

Where do you draw the line? Do you think it's unfair that people with Mx510s play against people with roller mouses? Do you think somebody's headphones gives them clearer audio than someone elses? Those are all much more significant advantages than the ones you mentioned.

I don't really care about scripting to the point where I would get into a flame war about it, because I can play fine either way. But people still haven't realized that this applies for everyone. My only problem with scripting is it divides the community needlessly. Blockscripts is the equivalent of allowing server admins to decide whether scripting is abusive, and it doesn't make sense.

« on: December 01, 2004, 01:05:44 AM »
I got it working (at first), and the game is extremely good. Perhaps one of the best deathmatches I have ever played.

Even though the server I played on had 200 ping, all my shots hit and I could even hit people with the slow moving crossbow. Gravity gun works unbelievably well even in a 200 ping environment. Magnum is a bit overpowered, and the shotgun is a bit underpowered. You can nail people left and right if you can aim with the magnum.

But now I try to start it up and it doesn't load. Oh well.

But this release really excites me. After playing this, you get a glimpse of some of the amazing possibilities in the future.

When I mention CAL, I don't say it to mean that all players should have the communication and teamwork that CAL players have, but thats generally what they should strive for. At the highest level of play, shotgun rushes are not problems, so that means with some added teamwork, you guys should be able to devastate shotgun rushes.

6 skulks rushing a base will always do enough damage to guarantee a win. Unless the marines have been dominating the whole game, it is extremely hard to come back from a skulk rush.

Holy_Devil, a smart alien team can delay marines from taking a hive down for a while, especially with a lerk. Again this comes with skill and teamwork.

Well, a level 0 lmg can solo a fade with a pistol. But you missed my point. Is that a realistic situation at all? No. Is four marines with level 0 shotguns getting a completely full blast into a fade a realistic situation? No. You need to give ingame situations that aren't "It takes X amount of bullets from Y gun to kill Z lifeform".

At least a few people should be checking their minimap constantly to check for weak areas of the map. This is where theres not much fighting but a straight walk from the marine base to a hive. Like lolfighter said, I find a few alert aliens will smack down a shotgun rush in its place. If worse comes to worse, just tell somebody to monitor a risky route to your hive while doing whatever it is he normally does (gorge, lerk, etc).

Did you know 6 skulks can rush the base with noone defending, and its game over. Does that mean we should nerf the skulk? You might not be able to kill the commchair, but 99% of the time you will cause enough damage to guarantee an alien victory if you do it right.

Hive 2 barely improves any lifeform? Uhh... hello? Hive 2 are the gamesavers for aliens. Leap, umbra, bile bomb? Maybe I misinterpreted your quote. If you get hive rushed with shotgunners at 2 hives, then something needs to be improved on the aliens teamplay.

Saying the marines can't win without shotguns is meaningless. Can the aliens win without fades or lerks or gorges?

A lerk and a smart team of skulks can take down any early game shotgun hive rush, as long as they have good scouting. Trust me, in CAL you never ever see a shotgun rush like the ones you talk about, you just need teamwork. In fact, with 5 marines in the hive with shotguns and lmgs, it can take more than 45 seconds to a minute to finish the hive off.

I'd hope a fade doesn't try to take on 4 shotgun marines. Again, this is where lerk gas and skulks can help significantly. It's not easy juggling between the harassing skulks and the fade while trying to dodge the gas, even with marines for backup. Try it sometimes, teamwork works.  :)

You know, an LMG can solo a fade. An HMG can solo an onos. Do you understand why these basic statistics shouldn't be used? There are so many other factors that need to be incorporated, and you ignoring them is not an accurate analysis.

Changing damage types vs certain armour typs is a horrible idea in a fps. You know why people play CS? They have a chance versus any player with any gun. At least that's why I enjoy CS. Right now, NS is built so it is impossible for certain types of classes to kill other classes one on one. While this hurts the fun level a little bit, introducing armour levels would be unbelievably frustrating and counter-productive. New players would quit because they don't understand why things don't die when they shoot them, and experienced players would get PO'd when they die to that skulk just because their gun isn't built specifically to kill it. In a RTS, it's understandable because it promotes diversity, but in an FPS it would be unbelievably frustrating and just plain bad.

I think the shotgun is slightly overpowered not because it can kill hives, but it can roam around the map early game and take down RTs without much resistance. This is my main beef with it, and I think their should be some sort of timer to prevent shotguns from coming out too early.

And Holy_Devil, could you try making your posts slightly more coherent? I read a few times where I understood what you meant but the word you used meant exactly the opposite.

HEY YEAH

you bring up a good point intensity, what WERE those lil slave type things? and and, there was that one part where they show a couple diff vehicles moving down assembly lines or something in the citadel? new weird vehicles...

guess we'll have to wait for hl3 to find that out  ^_^

Those were humans who applied for the soldier program of the combine but failed to meet the specifications or failed the tests, so they were genetically altered to become slave workers instead.

General / How To Skulk Better!
« on: November 04, 2004, 10:49:13 PM »
Don't wait until you see the marine when you're ambushing. Time it so as soon as the marine croshes your threshold, you'll be in his face. This prevents him from checking the ambushing spot and gunning you down before you have the chance to move.

Of course, the way to combat this as a marine is to make like you're going through a doorway, do a quick bunnyhop backwards and usually the skulk will show itself. Or, if he doesn't bait, and you are a marine with backup, try to speed (by strafejumping or bhopping on an available slope) through the doorway as soon as possible and get him to chase you a bit. Then have the backup shoot him.

And of course, the way as a skulk to counter this is when you see a marine speed through your threshold, run down (should already have had a jump start) but go through the doorway, and you'll usually get a kill on the dude's teammate. At this time you shouldn't have taken much damage and can hide easily since the remaining marine is on the other side of the doorway.

Like a game of rock paper scissors really.
