Off Topic / N64 vs GameCube
« on: December 23, 2004, 07:36:39 AM »
You forgot Pilotwings.

I can't believe that BH and SS:SV (also left off Dubb's list) were both by Rockstar. Rockstar are right up there as one of my favourite games producers. I got chatting to someone who worked for them last summer in Toronto airport and it seems like a decent company to work for.

I never finished either of those great games though. BH because it was huge and I refused to play it on Normal difficulty. The last thing I remember is being some where where it rained a lot and having to do some nifty plane flying. But it's all pretty much a blur. I think I still have it, I'll dig it out sometime.

As for SS:SV I whored it out one night I was supposed to be child minding a firend of mine's kid. She got him out a few games so I just banished him away to the Playstation so that I could gorge myself on the beauty of the amazingly well thought-out puzzle game that is Space Station: Silicon Valley. I need to buy that before I can't find it anymore.

Early on in when the PSX and N64 were competing I bought an N64 and my mate bought a PSX. Although there were games I thought were good I never once envied the fact that he had the PSX. From what I saw Metal Gear, FFVII, the GTs (but I'm sorry TOCA never did anything for me) and a few other titles that obviously weren't exciting enough for me to remember off the top of my head where the only ones I would have bought a PSX for.

Overall I think the N64 was geared towards a more multiplayer experience, the titles that were released and the shorter loading times show this. The best games on the N64 will be remembered as the MP games (with some exceptions that were too good not to be played). Examples include Super Smash Brothers, MarioKart 64, FZeroX, Mario Party (not my CoT but hey), Mario Tennis, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark and sadly not a lot more for me [apart from ISS 64 which is in a class of its own].

On the PSX the most popular titles were Single Player. The PSX could deliver more hours of gaming but the loading times just weren't suited to multiplayer. Time Splitters was decent but nothing more as regards multiplayer. The PSX pwned N64 on RPGs and on most SinglePlayer games (N64 SP titles were too short to be fully satisfying and not well designed enough for replayability, eg: StarFox, Staw Wars Racer, Rogue Squadron... with the only notable exceptions being Mario64 and Shadow Man with Zelda performing well but slightly under-par for me. {I never played Paper Mario, either of the Banjo Kazooies or Yoshi Story}

[Edit:] I'm sorry but, while at first MK.DD may seem far from the delights of MK64 you'll soon acknowledge that, while it has the inferior tracks, you can still have a hugely competitive game given the right people. Double Dash has a lot to do with the fact that I got a 2.2 this year.

1. I'm a language student, it's my job to care.

2. This thread never reached the second page. If you could read ultra-leet speek, you'd know that

3. If I can't have a girlfriend who either:
- regularly buys me pai or caek (preferably both)
- regularly cook my pai and caek (preferably both)

or preferably both, then I don't see what's so good about one.

4. Joking aside, what's to say that I don't have a girlfriend? (flamesuit: on)

P.S. 4.a) The fact that I say things like "flamesuit: on", also the fact that I didn't just say "Well I have a girlfriend actually, we share many a snuggle when I come back from a hard day pwnin teh nubbinses!". The main reason is that I have 0.66€ to my name, and everyone knows that -like your ride- your girl needs regular money spent on maintenance, be it the purchase of an occasional fuel top-up or image enhancing products.

In the UK there's a magazine called The Big Issue, sold by the homeless (with the person getting a reasonable percentage of the sale money). Anyway there used to be a section in the back of the mag devoted to funny death stories. Need I say more...

Mine was either Eclipse or Hera, and one of them got my vote bigtime.

If you're gonna redo the vote at least wait for people who browse a little less often to vote. My second vote would've gone to Lost or Nothing. I think for a map to get my vote they have to have an immersive atmosphere (that comment immediately gives away which map I voted for).

Anyway why isn't Richmond on there ;)

:D I shouldn't have any trouble then, I googled in "decaying organic matter" and came up with that site. I didn't realise that SwiftSpear had already been donned a knight of the round (flowery, happy and vibrant) table (old, revered and respected).

General / Early fade counters?
« on: December 20, 2004, 11:39:28 AM »
Well you're more likely to see Fades earlier on the average pub server because people won't be spending money on upgrades but more importantly because Aliens are more likely to drop nodes to get the res flowing early in the game.

Even if people didn't spend money on upgrades before the fact that there's no reason not to be upgraded means that Aliens will get more rfk. I think that one way is to have a small team or skilled individual taking down Alien RTs early on in the game to slow the res flow (this can also serve as a distraction to an uncoordinated team).

Depending on where it is remember that areas can still have strategic value if they serve as decent relocation points. If it's big enough and centrally located (or near to a good supply of res) then make it nice and flat and clear the ground and woohoo now it has strategic value.

Only thing is don't make it too cosy or it'll be a given Marine strat every time and that takes away from general playability imho.

Wow so after 46 views I get some replies!

Yes cell-shading is possible but you have to write your own shader or something... it's in the VERC Source Mod FAQs.

Yes there's very little information here, but I don't want to give to much away because I don't want my ideas being 'replicated' somewhere else. I'm only really giving more info to people who want to help. There are threads with more info on the help I need on the halflifesource.com and halflife2.net forums and there'll be one on NS.com as soon as it's up X(

[Edit: teh link] http://www.naturalselection.pexgames.com/n...1103489187.html

Couldn't be bothered to make a new thread so I'll post it here and ask a German to:

- Verify to the best of his ability that it is Nemesis Zero (I never knew he was German).

- Translate what has been said. I read a translation that only seemed to include one section of his post.

Thanx

[Edit #2:] His profile says he was born on the 29 May 1984, so I'm guessing it's not Ner0.

I would like to make clear that this thread is for the purpose of feedback on my Mod concept and not to advertise or recruit members for it's progress. If I get the go-ahead from the Forum Admins to do so then this would be a possibility, but for the moment I wish simply to see what you all think of the concept.

Citadel Utopia

Imprisoned within, your only escape is to try anything and everything.[/font]

You live in a world where your movement from zone to zone is restricted by a biochip housed somewhere in your brain. Implanted at birth by the law, to enforce the law, this controls where you can and cannot go, what you can and cannot do. Everything about your existence is controlled by others. With an inquisitive mind and the promise of freedom you can leave this place...
...you can leave this place

Citadel Utopia - A freeform RPG set in the confines of social imprisonment.

Addendum:

Basically I want the look to be comic-strip orientated with cell-shading to set it apart from other HL and HL2 Mods. Now I know this is possible in HL (see the toon SvenCoop level pack) so I'm sure it would work in HL2. What I want to know before making it definite is how workable it is, and also thoughts on whether it would fit the game.

For me it would give it a real-time Max Payne style of play, with characters' speech set in real-time speech bubbles. However, I wouldn't want it to have a Simpsons look, it should still incorporate a reasonable amount of detail as far as textures, models, skins and mapping is concerned. It is for this reason that I want it to be thought of as a comic-strip style and not a cartoon style.

The pro's for this idea are as follows:

- It fits with text-based speech, dialogue and information messages. It would be an incredible feat (not to mention how it would affect the data size) to find the various voice actors and go through the hours of editing required to get every line sounding as it should, whereas you can edit the impression a written sentence gives in a matter of seconds.

- It will help create a unique environment for Citadel Utopia, increasing immersion and setting it apart from other HL2 Mods. Not only will it be that SP RPG Mod for HL2, it will also be that cell-shaded comic-strip RPG for HL2. In my personal experience of gaming there is not enough to be said for most games that set them apart from the others. I begun gaming in a golden era where there was so much variety out there, things were branching off in different directions and setting new standards in both originality and performance. My main goal for this project is to create something the player can replay again and again, with the secondary goal being that it provokes enough interest and popularity for a sequel.
