Off Topic / WTF is going on here?
« on: January 07, 2005, 09:50:21 AM »
Well this thread went initially over my head until I realised how I could use it myself.

As some of you may already know, I'm making an RPG Source Mod. When I get the Website up I want to stick some of the storyline up (the less important stuff in the public arena and the more integral stuff in a private section for team references only). Since I never trust anyone, being able to post the text as an image and then go through a process similar to this would be able to hide some sort of "I made this first" message within the picture, so that if anyone was tempted to take it off to another Mod, I'd know I'd have an easy time proving it was my idea that they had totally ripped off.

1. Is this possible, and how failsafe could it be (nothing ever is 100% failsafe)

2. Could I also do something to the images to make them unreadable once off the website (ie somehow only properly readable by IE, so that when they were read by another image editing program, they would have something like a huge black square over everything, this would be incredibly useful).

If one of you script-daddies could find out I'd definitely stick your name in the credits...

What about Loke the Sleek Perv?

Anyway can an admin kill or merge my NS Forum thread with this or something. My motives for not looking anywhere else are fully explained in the thread.

I r now known as Crispy on the NS.com Forums and not -[Kobayashi]-

Yep, I'm happy!

I didn't have time to check the General or Off-Topic forums in my frenzy to tell you guys, and I thought that here'd be the best place to post it...

The NS Forums are back up! Ooh yay! Even if they're being a bit buggy I managed to get the namechange I wanted before wierd error messages. I'll have to contain my excitement until I can let it lose on the forums themselves, this is but a burst sprocket spewing out my crazed state of lunacy in comparison to what'll happen when I'm let lose on the NS Forums again! Ooh baybee!

Swiftspear, you forgot another key SC placement rule.

c) Never place them where they obstruct movement, they should be placed in areas of low traffic (this is another reason why putting them up high is worthwhile).

To add to this I'd have to say that some of the nooks and crannies R4d suggested shouldn't be used, because players like me (and also many other ex-CS players will use these places to reload in cover). Examples include the corridoors to West Acces and WA itself and also between the terminals in Reactor Room. When I bump into an SC I'll be making sure the rest of my team knows about it if I don't have time to take it down myself.

It doesn't take more than 5 minutes to put up a Christmas or New Year's message.

Considering how much time and effort we put into NS as part of our free-time, you'd think that just a Chrimbo or 2005 update, simply a greeting for those who care, wouldn't be too much trouble at all. It takes one team member to do it (two if you assume that the person writing it needs someone else to update the website for him) and overall it couldn't involve more than 15 minutes work.

Instead they've neglected to do this and even I, who during the first few months was checking the site (well no, all three: NS.org, NS.com and UW.com) everyday, frequently thrice daily, have stopped regularly checking and have found something else to get involved in (Citadel Utopia Mod). When the website does go back up I doubt I'll be contributing as much as I had been (I&S, Modelling, Mapping, FanFiction, Off-Topic) because I won't have time. You can't just make a club and then close it for two months, expecting everyone who used to take a few or more hours out of their week to frequent it to resume a routine that was "postphoned" for 60 days.

Personally I think it's very bad marketing judgement, very bad PR judgement and overall very bad judgement to neglect the most important part of a game, it's players.

Yeah but what connection and specs do you have, because the ROF is independant of the FPS-affected and clientside-dependant animations. You probably have too much of a good system to notice but low-end systems and connections are be able to distinguish between the two.

I know I used to have it on 56k when it got a bit laggy, so I guess that's kinda proof.

Adj there's some stuff in there that should be on NSLearn. Like I said in the blog, Theory of Commanding needs a sequel with some 'practical' advice.

Well it was going pretty badly. No money/job/place to live for the NY/-body left in the flat so I was on my own/-one's going to believe this but I got groped by a prostitute last night (I'm pretty sure I didn't ask for it)...

But in true Christmas style something turned everything around this morning when my uncle rang me up and told me he wanted me to be Godfather to his new baby girl, Amanda. Awww

You make a good point. 3 races would effectively maim, kill and bury the competitive scene as we know it, and NS was always designed to have that element in mind.

I mean't that it never got pushed of the first page of the off-topic forum (which for me would have meant that I never would have seen it). I wasn't trying to get this thread to two pages... <er, yeah>

Don't get how you made that assumption, maybe it has something to do with the fact that you were possessed when you wrote it (666th post ftw).

« on: December 23, 2004, 01:09:20 PM »
I didn't want to go overboard, just test out the effectiveness of putting it in certain places. As such I didn't merit it worthy of dispacing my NS-related Haiku. Adding it (or due to Gem's lashback, some other link) to a sig was going to be test #2 in my Googlewacking research.

Just checked the link you posted... well now I'll have to edit that post too. Admit it BM, you're just as interested in my little experiment as I am.

I may as well take this opportunity to apologise to Geminosity, it was never designed to be a personal attack and what's more a simple PM to me would have avoided this thread turning into what it has become.

Nevertheless I'm interested to gauge opinion on what we've seen, but taking Geminosity out of the equation so all complaints can be avoided. Do I have any ownership of my forum handle, and is so, to what extent? A name like Crispy could occur on many a board, so if someone does deliberately associate it with something (regardless of this something could be perceived by others), do I have a right to complain. Is there a difference if it was aimed at associating Crispy (John Doe from Idaho) with animal porn or associating "Crispy" (a product brandname) with happiness? Does Crispy045 on one forum have the same right as ::Crispy:: on another to complain? (if, indeed, either of them have that right).

Without evidence surely anyone could claim that they were associating a completely unrelated person, product or company with whatever they have been accused of associating the accusing person, product or company. Also although I only skim through the text that you have to acknowledge in your application before joining a forum, I can't say that I've noticed anywhere the statement referring to your acceptance or informing that your handle will become your legal property.

I'm not trying to deny that I did what I did, (I will say that there was no malicious intent), more to question what is right and what is wrong, what is legal or illegal in this area. I think it's raised an interesting discussion point.
