General / Shiva goes Official
« on: September 20, 2005, 10:56:09 PM »
Yes it's true. Moultano's map ns_shiva, much tested by CAL members and much commented on by the NS Mapping Forum has finally gone official.

Moultano was given the go-ahead to spread the good news to the people. Readyroom.org is where I got wind of it. I thought you guys might like to know.

Cue: happy!

Heart bleeds. Try 6 months w/o your PC.

The fact that I didn't have to add caps, exclamation marks and 1s to the statement is a testament to how damn harsh life is when you have to live life without your siamese twin.

I just played Chinese chess the other day which is similar to normal chess but with a few differences:

- It's Red vs Black
- It's Hans vs Huns
- There's a river down the middle of the board
- Some pieces can't cross the river
- THARS KANONS!

General / Getting altair out of rotation?
« on: February 20, 2005, 02:45:09 PM »
I think the hoo-har that Altair caused has given a lot for both the Dev team and KFDM to think about.

KFDM has spent untold hours improving it. If you check the announcements forum you'll see that the pit of death is already out, and many other improvements/alterations. Even since then there have been radical altairations to the map, so I'm looking forward to KFDM redeeming himself. I personally posted constructive criticism to KFDM a few weeks after the first release and I'm fairly sure he's taken on what people who bothered to try and help him have written.

The Dev team, I hope, will be giving maps a bit more scrutinizing before letting them into the Official mapcycle.

In eager anticipation,

Strange, because I've never seen that, so I don't know how the paintball saying that I remember from my friends would be one I somehow remember from a film I've never seen.

Ah, you meant this:

My plans are to release a Mod demo and then leave that out while the rest of the game is finalised. I'll try and release the demo so that you can play as many character-types as possible.

This, for me, is going to be one of the hardest parts to work on. It really needs to look fairly high-definition and also fit the CU universe. Visualising it and making sure we make the right choice will be a difficult decision to make, and will ultimately change the face of the game as screenshots and WIP shots are released on the site, which will be http://citadelutopia.hlgaming.com

Some more info for criticismo

I've only had time to type up the very start of the game, which will just leave you with more questions than answers. Sorry about that

============================================================

The POV is facing down, keeping pace with someone's legs that fill the
frame. All the while a subtle musical score is the only thing save the
echoing footsteps that fills this place, which observing the bottoms
of the doors that line the corridor you guess is an appartment block.
Through subliminal graduation the eerie footsteps become louder and
louder as they near their destination.

Finally they stop, shuffling to face their chosen door. The POV cuts
to show you the front of the door, head height. It opens and the music
climaxes, the screen filling with bright, white light.

The phrase: "Citadel Utopia" unearths itself from the white screen,
sharpening into focus, blurring, coming into focus again before
disappearing. The briefest of pauses later the text is there, clearly
legible and filling the width of the screen. The white fades to
black...

Fading into your (first person) view is a spartan room, small with a
viewscreen atop a desk and a recess of machinery, marked "SDU"
(Supplementary Dispensal Unit). Behind you are two windows, which upon
closer inspection turn out to be glorified light panels, complete with
blind fittings. Upon the wall, facing the foot of your bed, you see
the Citadel Utopia symbol (utankh) complete with a motto in a language
you are unable to decipher. Towards the corner of the room, the light
trim of the screen begins to pulse and it beeps, beseeching your
attention.

=====
Below: Some examples of the immersion I'll be hoping to incorporate into CU
=====

In your room you will find the clothing storage unit, its interior
complete with  one set of Citizen Alpha uniform. If you take it a new
one will slide into place from a recess in the wall. If you stay in
your bedclothes and attempt to leave you will see a message upon
pressing the button:

"Your attire is not suitable for outside use, Citizen. Please select a
uniform to change into from your storage unit."

In the corner of your room you will find a toilet and shower cubicle.
If you shower in your uniform and attempt to leave:

"You attire shows high humidity levels, Citizen. Utopian <H&S>
regulations state that this carries a <sickness> factor. Please select
a uniform to change into from your storage unit."

Your thoughts are most welcome, Citizens :p

Those true epic games, those two-hour-long Bast stalemates, are without a doubt my favorite.

Games like this have given my my best memories.

I was simply stating why I do like the Official NS Forums, nm. Anyway the site's being super-unreliable for me right now: most of the time not working, occasionally giving me strange SQRL messages and not working for 15 minuts or so. Not to worry, I got enough of it to make the backs of my eyes hurt so I'm happy for today.

Well I'm afraid as a mapper this community doesn't quite do it for me. 1 community map that seems dead, and Confusion's map that looks pretty good, but is nearing completion. Yesterday reminded me about the best bits of the mapping community, with ns_source, ns_hulk and ns_shiva all having released new betas. Also I like the "Creation" Forum to get some background knowledge about Modelling before I have a crack at it myself.
