Announcements / Update your profile!
« on: November 23, 2005, 09:22:36 AM »
Please make sure that the SteamID field in your profile is updated.  I will be creating access lists based on the forum database shortly, so if you don't update your SteamID, you will lose server access. As of today, there are 28 people with either admin or a reserved slot that do not have this field set correctly.

You can edit your steamid here

Also:
0:0:12345 is not a valid steamid.
0012345 is not valid either.
STEAM_0:0:12345 is valid.  Your steamid should look like what it looks like in a status.

That is all.

Well, I was there.  Then I was frozen.  Then I was there again.  Then frozen again.

FTW!

Apparently despite the fact that I can play CSS fine, NS doesn't like me.  It seems to be having problems with models, but who knows whats going on.

Anyway, randomly when I see any model, I apparently have a chance to freeze.

If you just wanna be a working schmuck like myself, a standard state school with a solid CompSci program and a good co-op program (co-op programs are a MUST if you be wanting a job or something craz like that after school).

Not exactly sure what the non-bolded part means, but the first part is very well said :p  Exactly where I went, and exactly what I became!

It means the college offers you a job in your field while you are going through college. The said job might not be paid, but you get experience. Since so many people are going into computer engineering/science, it helps to have experience to get a job. And a lot of times you can continue working where your co-op was.

Actually I heard it was the exact opposite.. the number of people going into computer science is declining, but the number of jobs is going up.

Can't help you much, I'm in about the same situation.  The only thing I've found, is the state schools are a hell of a lot cheaper then the other ones.

One of the schools I had looked at was 40k a year, can't remember if that included stuff like books, housing, etc or not.

I think I'm going to URI (Univeristy of Rhode Island)... but you really have to decide for yourself.

Check out collegeboard.com, they have this neat little web app that will let you get an idea of places.

Hell, if they had wanted to contiune the constie playtest, they could have set up private forums, protected by A) Apaches built in security, B) only user accounts for consties.  A) denies you access unless you have a valid user name/pass, and is not something that is easy (possibly impossible) to comprimise.

It's annoying, and its killed the mod.  That whole story about a corrupt database? Who doesn't backup the database on a major site before attempting to do a major upgrade.  I'm sure the documents telling how to convert from 1.x to 2.x tell you to back up multiple times.

Even if the database was corrupt, get the forums back up.. even if they are empty.   If you have empty forums and you still have people, they will fill back up.  Forums with lots of posts and no people are pointless.

the dairy queen coffee lawsuit was valid, the location in question had been warned several times by health inspectors to lower their temperatures but the DQ ignored them. the lady only sued after DQ failed to assit her in paying for ambulance fees, hospital fees and reconstructive surgery. she had third degree burns covering 95% of her upper legs and most of the skin on her fore-upper legs had been burnt off. she had to be hospitalized for over two weeks and then had to go through rehab and reconstructive surgery because large chunks of her leg had to be removed due to the burns.
also, liquids at 195F-200F in a styrofoam cup tend to make the cup unstable

If it was that hot, it would certainly make the outside of the cup at least hot to the touch.. and would you really put something that hot between your legs?  I haven't been in a car yet that doesn't have cup holders..

Well, think of it this way.  We (most of us) live in a nation where people can sue for spilling hot coffee on themselves, AND WIN.  banning these books is simply better then being sued for milllions of dollars.  While it may not be right, its a sad thing that it is present in todays socieity.

As far as firewall based stuff goes, I've heard really good things about m0n0wall: http://www.m0n0.ch/wall/ .. basically a livecd that configures your system as a firewall.. for this application, a livecd is probably a bit better then an actual distro installed to a HD.  This way, if by some chance you think the firewall got comprimised, all you need to do is reboot.

Managing multiple computers from one box is probably possible.  I only run linux on a few computers, all of which have unique configuarations, so I can't answer that.  However, rather the VNC, all you need to do is probably done at the shell, so SSH would be easier, because it would seem that you are actually sitting at the computer there.. its text only though.

OpenOffice is a good choice for office stuff.. past that, anything that does not have a linux port is probably supported under WINE (actually its called some really weird name now, but I don't know what it is).  Games will work, yes.. but the best preformance would still be under the native OS (Windows).

Running a firewall + server together may be a good choice, but combineing all 3 may not be the best idea.  On the plus side, m0n0wall is targeted at embedded applcations, so it doesn't require anything close to a good computer.

General / Why the SourceForts server quite honestly sucks
« on: August 29, 2005, 05:13:38 PM »
The server's maxrate is DOUBLE what the LM one is.  I have not heard of anyone other then you having problems with it, therefore.. its clientside.

As far as the gravity, valve decided to change the default on me, but again, you are the first one who has noticed, we had two developers playing for about a week, neither noticed.  And it made it by NO way hard to navigate the map, maybe different the normal, but there is no reason that any map would be hard to navigate.

Well, this is a bit late but:

We now have a sourceforts server!

lunixmonster.org:27020

All reserved slots have been carried over, if you don't have one PM me.  Admins who want access PM me too, because I don't feel like converting the access over for people who won't use it :)

The sourceforts client is avaiable at: ftp://lunixmonster.org/sourceforts/sourceforts-1.4.2.zip

Most of the maps on the server are in this zip: ftp://lunixmonster.org/sourceforts/lmmaps.rar

If the server is down, find someone on IRC :)

(edit) Fewl setup @sfdied to alert him, other admins who can reset it may follow in his footsteps! Abuse and get banned at the admins discretion.

(also edit) If you highlight lolfighter and he's paying attention, he'll gladly reset the server for you. If you highlight lolfighter and he doesn't respond, it's because he's absent from the computer or playing a game (his highlight is silent). Unless he doesn't like you, in which case it's because he doesn't like you.

Off Topic / NS Forums hacked

I don't know any names, but someone who knew who had hacked the NS servers and reported them told me about what happened.  Apparently someone hacked the main NS server (with icons and what not) as well as the forums and was playing around with pretty much everything.  Postcounts were changed, and icons were given to people.  One player was apparently smurfing as flayra with a dev icon.

I have no clue what needs to be done on the security end of things, but it was a pretty major hack in terms of how much access the hacker got.  Best of luck cagey

They just got access to the admin panel of invision..  I'm fairly certain the icon DB pulls from the forums DB, so adding icons doesnt seem too hard

General / Half-life\NS is VAC2 enabled now
« on: August 08, 2005, 06:55:32 PM »
I was just going to start a topic about this.

Honestly, I hope no.  I currently can't play any game that uses VAC2, because of some weird OS/firewall problem that is (hopefully) being worked on by valve now.  Their tech support has told me that it was forwarded to the developers and should be fixed soon.

I also know that there are vac2 proof cheats now, so I don't really know that there is a point to running vac2.  Is cheating that big of a deal on LM that this is a problem?  LM is going empty most of the day now, so is there a point in setting up vac2, and making sure that everything works on the server?

It's not like this is a CS server where most of the people seem to be cheating.. cheating in NS doesn't seem to be that big of a deal (Come on, we have a built in wallhack, ffs)

I believe that currently VAC2 is in a beta, where they are trying to get rid of connection problems, so its not actually detecting anything.. this is what my srcds displays on startup

Connection to Steam servers successful.
VAC beta secure mode is activated.

I don't know, I think that the problems dont even make up for what it will provide

General / NS 3.1 Changelog (Preliminary)
« on: August 07, 2005, 08:22:38 PM »
Right now, for each new player that connects, the server uses %3-5 more cpu.  When I connect by myself and hop around, I see it going from 2% to 14%.  So when the server's full, its using 50%+ of the cpu.  If this was just occuring on LM, NS server rentals wouldn't be 30% more expensive then CS ones. (nuclearfallout.net 10slot, CS: 28, NS: 42)

If a large hosting company cannot regulate the cpu ns uses, I don't really think we have a chance at doing it for each server.

This isn't even counting the random times when the cpu usage spikes to 100% and stays there, requiring HLDS to restarted.

I'm not sure how much I would trust the values past 11 players, because I haven't had the chance to get more data on them.
