Yeah, when you've had internet problems for months on end, you learn your way around the router.

If you don't get more ram upon purchase, you're going to buy some in the near future because you'll realize that 512 MB is really just taking your box, throwing it outside, smashing it with 2 by 4s while giving it a yuck coating, then urinating on it.

open up your browser and type in 192.168.1.1

a password prompt will come up.  Leave username blank, type in 'admin' (without the '') as the password.

After the screen loads, go to advanced

goto forwarding

Open up steam, goto play games, right click on whatever game you'll be playing, click on "Create Desktop Shortcut".

At the end of the target line add "+clientport [porthere]" replace [porthere] with the port. in the example i used 27006.

click okay.  goto start>run  type in cmd

in the prompt, type in "ipconfig" and take note of the ip address.  This isn't your real ip address, its the ip address assigned to you by the router.  take note of it.

go back to the port forwarding, and forward the port to that ip address.
the port I used was 27006 and my DHCP ip address assigned to me by the router was 192.168.1.100 so it would look something like this:

for your brothers computers use different +clientport [porthere], then forward that port to thier computers.  For example, my brother has the ip 192.168.1.101, and for him i set +clientport 27007.  So i would forward port 27007 to 192.168.1.101 via the port forwarding section of the router.

All PCI cards are from newer-smaller companies that you've never heard of.  They're also more expensive than thier AGP counterpart.  A 128 MB PCI card will cost you more than a 128 MB AGP card.

I'd just wait it out until you can get a new computer.

Lets face it, people.  Humans are naturally selfish.  They may not act like it, but once in a while they'll say "Screw everyone, I'm here for my own enjoyment".  Because they realize that we don't really know eachother, and we don't see eachother physically, so no harm can come to them.

We need the bind of pain back.  The only complaint about it was from admins that were spectating.  Oh no.  The bind of pain made you join a team, and it takes effort to press that f4 button and then the button that you binded for spectate.  BoP would solve 90% of  reg stacking right off the bat when an admin is there.

Its a router problem.  I had the exact same thing.

Basically what you do is put +clientport (porthere) and forward that port to the computer via the router.

ie, my brother and I both play on steam, so we had to use different ports: For him, I created a shortcut for the game, and put +clientport 27007 in the command line (any port will do, I just put a port that is most likely not used).  For me, I put +clientport 27008.  Then I forwarded these ports to the appropriate computers and bam:  No more random parse error disconnects.

General / How To Bite A Res Node

to avoid that, just bite in a different direction.  The 'neck' of the res node isn't the only place where it can be bitten.

So you're muching on that RT, helping the team out. A marine comes near on the other side of the hallway, but you don't worry, you're protected by being behind the resnode. Thats what you thought until he pistolwhips you from across the hall.

There is a safe way to bite the res node:

Step 1: Pick the best angle. The best angle is the angle that is 180 degrees from where the marine is most likely to come from.

Step 2: Get in the body of the res node. That is, the main big fat part, near the top. You'll know you're in it because you can then see right through the res node. Make sure you're in the correct position then start biting now.

Step 3: While you're biting, this is the important part, Move to the left or right EXTREMELY slightly ONCE.

What does this do?

->When you position yourself at a 180 degree angle from the marine, the res node's hitbox blocks the marine's fire. This forces the marine to come VERY close in order to register any hits on you, in which case it is to your advantage.

->Even though you can crawl into it, the body of the resnode does have a hitbox, and will block bullets. Once in it, you can also see through it, giving you a visual advantage as well.

->Once in position in the body of the res node, moving slighty to the left or right causes you to turn SIDEWAYS. This allows your body to be completely covered by the res node, yet makes no difference to what you see.

You'll find yourself a bit slow getting into position at first, but once you practice, you'll be able to take down res nodes without fear of being pistoled from miles away.

Okay.  Here we have the Horseshoe node on ns_eclipse.  There is the skulk trying to kill it incorrectly.

nodebiting1

This is an example of the '180-degree' angle bit.  The red box indicates the direction of the marine if he was coming from Maintenance Hive.  The red X indicates where you should be.  The blue box indicates the direction of the marine if he were coming from marine start.  The blue x indicates where you should be in this case.

nodebiting2

The skulk gets up into the body.  The 'body' i was talking about is outlined in red here.  He is turned sideways for maximum coverage.  If he didn't, chances are some parts might stick out from the top or bottom, which are exposed to fire.

nodebiting3

Heres a look at a different angle

nodebiting4

Now lets take a look as if I were the marine, walking up trying to save the node.  You cannot see the skulk.  He is completely hidden.  In the game you could hear him bitting.  Proof that he is still there is the map in the upper right, clearly showing a skulk on that node.  There is no way to harm him from this angle

nodebiting5

I moved closer and to the right a bit.  Now I can see him.  I try to pick him off.  The third picture is a picture from the skulks point of view.  See how he can see me very well as I try to pick him off.

nodebiting6

nodebiting7

nodebiting8

No blood.

nodebiting9

Lets try it when i'm this close at this angle.  Here a look from the skulk POV, too.  He is VERY close.  In fact, you could go out there right now and try to kill him, but he can't hurt you from there, so its better to wait.

nodebiting10

nodebiting11

Still no blood.

nodebiting12

Finally, If I shoot him from this angle, I see blood!  You can shoot him from here! But take a look at the map.  Look how close I am.  That is prime owning position for the skulk.

Thanks to Sonic for help with the screenshots.

General / A Problem With Regs.
« on: August 15, 2004, 05:59:15 AM »
Its not a matter of time, but a matter of ease.  Its hard to heavy train a hive with tight corradors because skulks are upsidedown, left, right and hard to shoot while onos's stomp can affect the whole team at a time.  JPs are obvious choices for some hives, they just need a bit more organization.

« on: August 14, 2004, 10:03:30 PM »
The jetpack is an excellent and powerful tool for assaulting hives.  In fact, it would be stupid not to get jetpacks on certain maps.  Hives like The Great Viaduct, Power Silo, Waste Handling (and many many more) are VERY jetpack friendly.  Don't think heavy trains can solve every problem.  Heavies do not do well in cramped spaces.  You're more likely to unload onto the back of your buddy than onto the skulks.

Think about it:  One jetpack != One heavy.  One heavy is useless.  It just makes you a big target and makes you easier to pick out.  One jetpack is different.  It gives large mobility and speed over your regular marine.

What many of you said is true, jetpacks are hard to handle, even with regs.  Some people are more experienced (read: can fly better) with jetpacks than others.  Large groups of jetpackers get seperated easily because some just zoom off, and others get stuck on the ceiling and get left behind.  The jetpack also feels very empowering to a marine.  Now not only can you get to places which were previously impossible, you can get there faster and more efficiently.  You're harder to kill, harder to hit, and its just all around more fun with jetpacks.

So what do we do with these rowdy marines who think they're invincible with a jetpack?  We need to baby them.  This means, you guessed it, commrage.  Waypoints and screaming into the mic directing everyone in the same direction.  Ground commanders help to by leading the group to the specified place.  If it doesn't work out, bacon them back again and again until they get it right.  15 res a bacon is better than losing 30 res a marine (jp + shotty + welder) + whatever RFK you gave to the aliens.

I was on that game with Quaunaut, and was one of the two marines that actually got into the vent in computer core.  The orders were "Go to compcore, but go through the vent".  one marine went through the left door, the others follow, while I went through the right door, through station access to subjuction III and into the vent.  Besides Asurada, no one else made it.  My guess is they went to maintenance (Which was heavily lamed) and died.  What you needed to do was set the waypoint, and yell at individual people.  Humans will follow the mass, because humans thirst for leadership.  If you get the leader to go where you need, then the rest will most likely follow.  When you saw they were headed to maint, beacon back, then try it again.
