Off Topic / Child Stupidity At Its Best
« on: April 08, 2004, 06:25:55 AM »
So i walk into a convinience store to cut through it to get to the bus station and i see two kid at the counter wit a coke and candy bar each.  Now that convinience store is a down-right ripoff.  It came out to something around 7 dollars something CAD.

So the kids stick thier hands in thier pockets, grab out any spare change.  They didn't have enough.

So one kids like "Oh, i've got a debit card"  So he reaches into his wallet, pulls out a red plastic card and gives it to the clerk.  The clerk swipes the card, and there isn't enough on it to get them the goods.

So, without a thought of actually leaving the stuff there and not buying it, the kids give the clerk ALL thier change AND asks her to take the rest off the debit card.

That means 7-some dollars  + 3-dollar debit card fee, making the grand total to atleast $10.  The kids walk outside with a candy bar and a coke each, pretty pleased with themselves with solving that financial problem.

Off Topic / Laptop Gaems!
« on: April 06, 2004, 08:37:44 PM »
The next few days are going to be pretty boring because my classes have nothing to do.  I bring my laptop around because i'm fed up with the crap they give us in the labs (the number of times they crashed without me saving...i don't even want to think about it).

I was thinking of sticking a couple multiplayer games on it that all players would play on the same computer (like worms or pocket tanks)

I have an Intel Celeron 300 mhz computer with a 'NeoMagic' 4 MB graphics card; 256 mb of ram.  Any suggestions?

General / Commanding 101
« on: April 03, 2004, 07:11:34 PM »
A few rules to follow to unsuck yourself as a commander:

#1.  Don't touch those friggin turrets until mid-game.

I know it may look tempting (OMFG, THEY SHOOT BY THEMSELVES!), but turrets are horrible beginning static defence unless you really put alot down, which you don't want to do, as it cripples your res so you can't do anything.

#2.  I don't want to see a friggin turret factory in marine base

If you want electrification, then build a turretfactory next to a res node (preferably an important one).  then electrify either the tf or res node.  The electrify will protect both, and if the res node is an important one (temperature control, mess hall, south loop, etc.) Then you have the option of electing both, or putting turrets down to lock down the choke.  let the tf rot in ms isn't going to get you anywhere.

#3,  Mines, mines, mines.

Without those turrets, mines are great at killing skulks.  When placed effectively, they do a much better job than turrets.  1 pack won't cover a base, though, you'll need minimum 2.  And ffs, replace them if they explode.  Mines also are useful around small outposts to keep the pesky skulks off while you're rushing that hive.

#4.  Warning: May or May not screw the game for you.

Electrify is a very powerful defensive measure, however it'll blow a hole in your wallet the size of my penis (In reality, that would be a small hole, but on the internet, anything is possible!).  30 res can get you: w2,a2, mt + 5res, 2 pg, upgraded armory, etc.  Many of those things are much mnore useful than an electrified rt.  But i'm not saying don't electrify.  Use in moderation.

#5.  Rush crucial upgrades.

Your marines arn't going to kill Holy_Devil out there with your puny level 1 lmg, and lvl 0 armor.  w1 and a1 is a MUST in the beginning, some comms like mt in the beginning too.  All three of these upgrades can mean the difference between "OMG GUYS YOU SUCK, IT WAS JUST 1 SKULK" and "NSPlayer (LMG) Holy_Devil".  And if you can't make a decision on where to spend res, always spend on upgrades.  Electrifying that node is no where near as useful as w2.  Also, keep the upgrades coming, even if you're a bit short on res.  If you don't keep up with the times, your upgrades will not be able to catch up with what the marines are going up against, and sooner or later, you're going to have two fades on your marines and you only have a1.  You should have atleast a1-w2 by the time you see a fade, then shotguns will shread them to peices.

#6.  Don't be arrogant.

You're the comm, not king of the map.  Don't ignore your marines they offer good suggestions.  If you respect your marines your marines will respect you.  But then, don't let the marines push you around.  You're not king of the map, but you're still the comm, and you're running this joint.  Ignore Isamil screaming for a shotgun, and get a phasegate to devicenull in Sewer instead.  Find the balance between the two, and you won't lose.

#7. Use that res!

Unless you're saving for a mass equipment suit-up for your marines, you should never have more than 40 res (the most expensive would be w3, a3, or protolab).  If its sitting there, its not res, its garbage.  Res ins't truely res until you use it.

#8.  PHASE DAMNIT PHASE!

Phase gates are extremely crucial to winning.  If you can't get there and reenfrorce your marines, then you've already lost.

#9 The observatory

This is one of the more useful tools that you'll be using the most.  Ping areas where you hear some action going, gather intelligence, and that way you can make the best move.  Marines getting slaughtered? bacon them back to base..no sense letting them die.

#10 WTF are you doing comm?!

Keep your marines informed!  Don't just sit there quietly twiddling your thumbs.  They have a hive going up in Eclipse? Tell them!  Getting armor 2? Report it!  You want them to get to that res node? Don't jsut give them a waypoint!  Tell them exactly what you want, and exactly what you're doing, and exactly what you're planning to do.  This will get thier priorities straight.  This can mean the difference between "God damnit, don't knife that res node, i want a phase gate there...crap here comes the onos." and "Phase up, heavy train away!"

#11 "Okay, someone else comm now"

Never EVER get in the commchair unless you're planning to weld it shut with you inside.  There are many people who think they're good marines when no one wants to comm by jumping in the chair, putting down two ips, an armory and a tf.  THEN they get out, and say those terrifying words "Okay, who wants to comm?".  Not every comm will go for your basic load out base.  Heck i don't ever get a tf until later in the game.  Some maps just scream "relocate!", and if you put even one building down, relocation is already dead:  You've wasted res, you've wasted time, you've wasted the time of the marines who are currently buliding the structure.  You get in the chair, you stay there.

#12 "Holy crap! i need a medpack!....comm?"

a VERY common mistake that happens often is that you have a skulk in base chomping down on your armory.  Comm jumps out, gets killed, and now the skulk is free to camp the ips.  NEVER jump out of the chair to kill something as a light marine.  If you've got the res, drop yourself some equipment: heavy armor, hmg, or jetpack (if you get into the chair with a jetpack, the fuel tank starts empty when you jump out, so this isn't reccomended).  As bad as it might look, if your team does not have someone in the chair, they can do absolutely nothing.  Stay put in the chair, scream for someone to get to base, anything but get out of the chair unless you're toting some heavy-duty equipment.

#13 Commander: NSPlayer

NOTHING scares a marine more than NSPlayer in the chair.  the LEAST you can do is change your name.

[Edit2] added #11 - #13 [/edit2]

General / Co_spawncamp
« on: March 28, 2004, 06:39:55 AM »
even though this thread won't be put into action, i'm just voicing my thoughts.

Since co_spawncamp's respawn system allows you to keep your lifeform, i believe that even if you "protect" your friend eating the commchair, you are still waiting for someone to spawn, and hence get in the first bite before he or she realises what the hell is happening, it is spawncamping.

"STFU NOOB, its combat, you're SUPPOST to spawncamp"

oh, well then, i'll just sit here, shining up my shotgun while pistoling the hive a few times every now and then, then splattering your guts on the floor when you spawn.  Sure, its viable, its combat!

"Dude, i was protecting my friend"

Your "friend" doesn't need to be protected in a friggin 4 vs 4 game when you spawn one at a time. Any bigger and it might be viable.

"Haha, noob, you just can't kill us, thats why you call it spawncamping"

Hey buddy, how about you go marines for once, and you see how hard it is to kill a spawncamper, alien whore.

I really hope Flayra's taking alot of thought about his new little game mode in beta 4

General / To Electrify Or Not To Electrify~
« on: March 25, 2004, 07:32:30 PM »
you can basically divide ye olde cornmandores into two groups:

Electrification whores.
non-electrification whores.

Both have thier advantages, and both have thier disadvantages.

Many people say that experienced commanders do not use electrification to hold thier resnodes because they pressure the aliens so much, that they don't have time to chew them down, and they reccomend that newer, or inexperienced commanders that electrification is a must.

« on: March 24, 2004, 08:35:53 PM »
If you haven't heard Zero7's voice on lunixmonster, you have to listen atleast once before you die.

Zero7's voice has been featured in such situations as:

The mysterious phone call to the police stations stating ransom, kidnappings, or demands.

The mysterious phone calls to victims in the Scream series.

Masked voices in anonymus interviews on TV.

He strikes fear into the hearts of anyone who hears them!

General / Lag...
« on: March 18, 2004, 01:48:52 PM »
When i first came to Lunixmonster, my lag was mid 80s to high 90s.  That lag has constantly risen to the point of 150...where playability is hindered now.

150 ping means that circle straifing is now extremely deadly.  Before you could track which way a marine circlestraifed you, but now, i jump at one, and he disappears after i give him a bite.

this kind of high ping also means that, due to HL's lag compensation, skulks are biting me from some 45 centimetres away.  I always thought that this was due to its bite radius, but it has become clear to me that lag compensation is screwing me over royally, not to mention that i can't follow skulks around anymore, and i end up shooting exactly behind them, but never hit them.

This kind of lag prevents me from comming, as when one comms, the lag shoots up even more at times.

Several calls to my ISP (Bell Sympatico) have come up with no answer.

Any suggestions on how to tweak?

Off Topic / The Truth
« on: March 08, 2004, 08:33:01 AM »
Everyone always wants the "truth", which is assuming that there is only one.  But the truth is so manipulable, that there can be several truths at one time.

For example, on a rainy day you feel gloomy, and on a sunny day you feel happy.  This is a truth, not the truth.  All the children are being
brainwashed by children television shows that Sun = good, rain = bad, ie Teletubbies, Barney, etc.  That is how we were taught to think, this is how we think.

However, it doesn't always have to be this way.  For some people, rain is happy, rain is great, and sun is bad.  The desert ecosystem, for example, looks devoid of life because the animals are hiding from the heat, and trying to keep cool.  Once the rains come in, they come out, cactus flowers bloom, and the "devoid" desert is now bustling full of life.

The Truth is so easily changed, and thus humans are just as easily swayed.  Humans are controlled by thier perspective of the truth, because that is human.

Just my two cents

I for one am thankful that the lag issue was resolved, and fsd will not be combat only.  I'll be looking forward to less commrage.

God damnit.

I don't feel like playing ns anymore.  Combat blows after the 100th time the god damn players stack holy_Devil or cwag.  It also doesn't freaking help that fsd is co-only until the lag is fixed, and 3.0 isn't fun if you don't play with regs you know and trust.

The only alternative is 2.01, and lunixmonster is the only server in the whole god damn ns community.  what does that mean? Noobs. Utter, horrible, noobs.  I've gotten commrage after commrage after commrage after commrage on lm.  Why?

"COMMS A NOOB," says the stupid idiot that got in the chair because i had to get out to build my own crap when no one did and drops a single turret while getting out, and shooting my chair as if to shoot me.

"I need ammo"  ammo? What the HELL do you need ammo for? the skulks are freaking circle straifing you to death before you can empty your god damn clip.  why do you need 250 ammo? you're going to DIE before you can even reload,  you can't shoot for crap.  Period.

"Omg, stop skulk rushing us, its instant win for you"  No it isn't. shut the hell up.  maybe if you'd stop building when you hear the skulks you'd live 5 seconds more and maybe actually take a couple hp off that lone skulk so it'll be easier for me to kill it when i get out of my chair for the 5th freaking time.

"Theres no point of a commander if you don't follow my orders"
"Well maybe if you'd stick to your orders, we'd follow them" HELLO? HEEEELLLOOO? THIS IS A FREAKING WAR.  ORDERS CHANGE WITH THE SITUATION.  YOU CAN'T TAKE OUT THAT WALL OF LAME WITH NO UPGRADES GOD DAMNIT GET TO SLEEPING QUATERS.

"Onos, drop shotguns" shotguns. WHY in the hell do you "need" shotguns? you have freaking level 3 weapons! ITS A ONE HIVE ONOS FFS! IT DOESN"T EVEN HAVE STOMP. SHOOT HIM DAMNIT STOP HUMPING THE ARMORY

"Comm, attack the hive" yep, lets attack the hive WHILE YOUR FREAKING TRYING TO TAKE OUT LAME AT DOUBLE RES.  NO, GO AND DIE, YOU'RE NOT GETTING THAT MEDPACK.  GET TO YOUR WAYPOINT YOU MORON.

"COMM I NEED AMMO, I CAN'T SHOOT WITHOUT AMMO" ffs, you just spawned, and you haven't fired a shot. why in the HELL would you need ammo?  You don't do anything.  you just occasionally shoot MY COMMCHAIR because YOU don't like losing.  and why did we lose? BECAUSE YOU DIDN'T GOTO YOUR :DING WAYPOINT THATS WHY.

Goto you waypoint.  No not that way, THIS way.  why the hell are you over there? i said get HERE.  is there something wrong with you? you passed the waypoint 10 seconds ago.  no, don't go into that hive, its lamed up.  god damnit you have a freaking grenade launcher! GET BACK OVER HERE. /quit

i think i'll take a break from ns, until some regs get out of "OLO COMBAT SI TEH LEET" and get back in lm

General / Just A Nice Little Reminder
« on: February 04, 2004, 02:00:58 PM »
DO NOT GET IN THE CHAIR IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO COMM.  IF YOU GET IN THE CHAIR, JUST COMM IT OUT, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A GREAT COMM.

Why? Well, lets see:

1.  Every comm has a starting base config.  Once you set the first building down, no other comm can command because it just makes things more complicated.  Once you put that first building down, you are the comm.

2.  So what if you're not a good comm? everyone has to start somewhere.  Why not just play it out, and atleast get some experience.

for the love of GOD listen to your team, do NOT ignore them.  They will give you advice on how to comm.

NS is an ***************** team game.  If you don't want to listen to your commander, get the hell out.

Yes, we know about the turret farm:  everyone's used it, everyone dispises it.

On lm, we like to think a little different.
Heres what happens when comms go mad with res...

I don't think you'd want to try and take down that phase

Skulk repellant? Heck, this could beat back an onos

If you can't beat them...Instagib them!

Off Topic / Midori No Hibi
« on: January 27, 2004, 05:36:22 PM »
Some of the better moments of Midori no Hibi; a japanese manga.  For those who don't know the story, yet:

Quote
Because of his personality, Sawamura Seijihas earned quite a reputation as a deliquent.  However, because of that very same reputation, he can't get a girlfriend, and has spent most of his youth miserable.  The one person who has always admired him was Midori.  Because she's so shy, she never told him her feelings, but because of her strong feelings for him, her wish to be with him has been granted(?).  Now, while her real body sleeps at home, a smaller version has appeared on Seiji's right hand.  Until Midori returns to normal, she and Seiji must now live thier lives without revealing thier secret.  Sawamura, who now has a right hand girlfriend, is gradually beginning to change...

Doesn't this seem familiar...

(Context=Takako, a girl who also has feelings for Sawamura [developed in earlier chapters, before she really hated him], has accidentally given him sleeping pills, and is taking full advantage...)
