I think its funny that the one weapon SwiftSpear complains about is the only one thats nearly entirely useless. The Minigun is a glorified shotgun - maybe if you run a sound suppressor its workable, but otherwise you might as well just use the fatman fist.

Minigunners are insanely comftorable to go up against, like civ said. They can't chase, they can barely round a corner to finish a kill and they can't shoot at any range. At best they might hope for you to run into them, which gets them a kill. But "really unaware people" aren't a high priority target to be quite honest.

The next most hilarious thing about the minigun is of course that it stops firing if you aren't touching the ground - so even just getting shot and knocked off the ground a bit can stop your firing.

Whatever, Minigunners are a great source for Leg Booster kills.

Not to overly victimize competitive players - but this perception stems mostly from a sore losers mindset, usually trying to find and point out fault. If you play a very average game, nobody will bust out a magnifying glass and analyse all the things you say and do with a gigantic negative predisposition. However, dominate a few rounds - and you can be saying nothing at all, you'll be perceived as insufferably arrogant.

But polemic arguments like these and sweeping generalizations based on under-analysed perceptions are after all what keeps that healthy friction between communitys going, so who am I to complain about it?

The worst thing you could maybe say about every competitive player without being incorrect is that playing above an average skill-level would be impolite. But thats hard to change - not like playing Chess with your little brother, where you can just lose to make him feel better ;)

Guys, if you cant hit the skulks check your configs. By default, your rates have been reset. Fix them.  For my freaking sanity. Please.

Its a server problem. I've got different demos of B6 just going live and of servers that have been running a few hours - on one you'll see clean hit registry (well as clean as it was in Beta5), on the other you can merrily observe every single kill being about ~2 seconds late and all sorts of weirdness, with the precise same rate settings.

As far as 3.0 Final is concerned, alot of the changes are just silly. Most marine wins we see stem from really, really bad alien teamplay lacking in the essentials. Sure its nice for the ole ego to take credit for those wins, but the build itself is still unbalanced.

Most of n44bs stuff only really works with guns dropped, or precise minimal loadout (no extra ammo). Kind of limits usefulness. But damn if I ever need to impress the chicks in NS, thats what I'll do.

That Chess game in mortal kombat deception is pretty cool since you get to fight over the square and have your mage do a special move like revive or kill a enemy "grunt" or "sorcerer" and you can set up 1 "boobey trap" which when any player lands on it. BEWM say goodbye :D.. but it can be quite annoying when the other sorcerrer teleports your grunt right onto their boobey trap

but its chess with a twist. Though I prefer regular chess

Thats an understatement along the lines of "a hermaphrodite is just a girl with a twist". Its a chick with manparts son - and that chess you're talking about is just as weird and disgusting.

When I first read the topic title I'm like, "has Iconoclast lost it?  no one doesn't play chess"  Then I realized you meant online  :p

I don't play chess.  Never have.  Don't know how.  Never had any interest to lean.  Ok, well maybe I'm kinda curious, but it just seems like there are so many rules, I have a hard enough time with checkers.

Steam checkers anyone??  I haven't won.... in like... ever, but I'm up for a good clean loss!

The rules of chess are the surprisingly similiar to checkers, its about simple movement patterns to remove pieces. But instead of only having one type of movement with possible combos, chess has different movement abilitys for each type of piece but no funky stuff like combos (a few special moves are the exception). And one move constitutes your entire turn.

So for example, the little dudes (pawns), are able to move 1 space forward at any time or 2 spaces if that particular pawn hasn't moved yet this game. Pawns can only attack 1 unit diagonally and towards the enemy players side of the board (no backwards diagonal attack - in fact they can never move back) and hence make slightly clumsy pieces - but due to their number (8) and alignment are some of the most powerful players on the board.

In contrast, the queen is only given once to each player, but is able to move in any linear direction (can't change directions during the move, duh) without limit (except the 8 square limit of the field, duh) - so she can move diagonally, horizontally or vertically across the field. However all figures need a clear path of movement over enemy and friendly pieces, unless they intend to take said enemy piece.

All pieces are taken by simply being able to move a figure of yours onto them. So if you have a line from your queen to a target piece, you're able to take it. Or if your opponent moves a piece within 1 unit forward-diagonally (its simpler than it sounds :p ) of a pawn of yours. Theres 3 more pieces (4 with the King), but I'm just trying to get the idea across here.

Chess is really worth learning, not because it proves wether you're smart or anything (high level chessplay is merely good pattern recognition), but because learning chess is a great mental exercise. The beauty of the game will slowly become evident as you begin to see the inter-dependencies all 16 pieces (of 5 different types) on the board develope - each one covering an area, a line, a square - threatening or defending a piece, being threatened or defended by another piece, until its one big chain reaction. Thats when you can call chess complicated for a moment. But the rules themselves are easier to learn than those of most card games :)

Get IRC, join #nspickup on gamesurge for organized low-level games, or try #obs-ns if for some reason you want to get recruited right off the bat. I don't recommend it though, you probably want at least some real experience under your belt first. Unless you get off on SaltzBad making you feel inadequate and worthless, of course.

Oh, and TAK - how are those FPS ? A few tweaks I thought of since we last chatted :
userconfig.cfg

gl_clear 1
gl_cull 1
gl_dither 0
gl_keeptjunctions 0
gl_max_size 256 (You can lower this number further, but text gets blurry)
r_decals 0
mp_decals 0

r_mmx 1 or r_3dnow 1 depending on your CPU type.

RivaTuner (running Detonator 29.42 - 40.92 WHQL drivers, OR if you have WinXP you can try the StarThingy-Drivers. They're hard to find, but they're better than even Omegas [on which I never saw much improvement anyway] ). Also once you get good FPS make sure your mouse is running via USB, or if you have XP via PS2 tweaked to 100Hz or higher.

RivaTuner LOD Bias to +3.0 (you could crank it higher outside of RT, but its plenty ugly at 3.0)

Most of all, experiment with a clean windows install. Make sure your AGP aperture in your BIOS isn't too large, turn off all unneeded peripherals (onboard MIDI ports, soundcards, parallel ports, blablablabla). Maybe also run MBM to make sure your CPU isn't running hot due to a clogged fan, and check that its clocked correctly (mine resets itself to 12.5 * 100 instead of 133 every so often).

Yeah, thats about it for now.

Ayumi is an extremely marine biased map due to how its a long :Ding set of hallways and stuckspots. My Lerking sucks and I can't do crap without a high ceiling. It is however one of the few maps where i'd encourage use of OCS. We (my clan) developed a "strategy" which involved an OC gorge for it and we just OC'ed up the key junction outside of cold turn and cold turn itself and it worked against nubs that don't TF-block in scrims.

Edit : Hey everyone, look forward to OC gorging being standard fare in B6. Woopiieeee.

THC is a hallucinogen

Actually, it doesn't really fit in to any category.

Sorry for being simplistic about the matter, however a fair sum of substances don't smoothly fit a single of the 3 basic categorys. Thats why they're called basic categorys. The borders are just as wishy-washy with MDMA (ecstasy), which is also either described as hallucinogen/stimulant or more fittingly as "something entirely else".

Its my understanding we were discussing the effects of the commonly consumed varietys. Either way though, you're completely right :)

Edit : Even alcohol is funny. The biggest, most common party drug around, yet its a depressant ;)

THC is a hallucinogen, nicotine is a stimulant. I doubt people would be getting their soft stimulant fix from tobacco, its just not quite as interesting as marijuana. Or can you imagine someone saying "Hey, you've got to try it - you'll feel slightly energized and fidgety, like having a coffee" ? :p

Not that I personally care a whole lot, if we were going to devolve down the legalisation road I'd have to agree that adverse health effects aren't strong enough in marijuana to warrant disallowing consumation and posession.

@scooter:
Welcome to the "I don't need an argument if I have controversy" argumentation style ;)

And just because I never replied to it, the "15% of all people viewing pornography develope sexual disorders" statistic took the cake. I'd like to see how that survey was done with a correct control group - fine 2 similiar numbers of people who do and don't view any porn at all, prove that none of them currently have any sexual disorders, then go on and study them over 30 years. When you're done be quoted by a fluff site that conveniently emits any information about what definitions for SDs were used (DSM-IV? ), and what methods were used for the survey, and what rate of disorder developement was found amongst real "non porners". Phew. Suffice to say that site does not appear credible in the slightest.

Dignity still IS an issue to be considered.  The vast magority of women simply don't want to be thought of in any way that might be synonomous with porn stars.

The vast majority of men don't want to be the one-dimensional character of a romance novel, the tired stereotype of a soap-operate antagonist or for that matter, most poignantly, a well-toned, tanned meathead fresh out of any commercial. That does not mean I, as a guy, find it wrong that some females entertain these fantasies - and I'm certain not every female that has once bought into one of these things would be capable of only this kind of thought.

In the same way, we all know not all women are large breasted bleached blondes ready to :D the nearest stranger, but sometimes we just want to relax and pretend. Simplified and rather demeaning stereotypes are the lifebread of all sorts of entertainment anyways - literature, video, film, books - and not exclusive to porno.

So excuse me if I still don't see the compelling reason behind this anti-pornography thing. Of course you are right, its not doing a whole lot of harm either - but I got the feeling you wanted to discuss the benefits here, not make the statement that repressive attitudes towards sexuality are "still better than a poke in the eye". :p

Addendum :
You're correct that the human psyche, and not just sexuality, as a whole is a largely vague field - however that disorders are often created by repression or the creation of subconscious and conscious conflicts is no secret.

Oh well, 7 AM and I'm not being very coherent. If anything above seems unclear, just ask.

I like how we just equated "wanting to hump" to "objectification". If you're unable to have sex without demeaning your partner into an object, I feel a tad sorry for you.

Quote
I can't help but disagree compleatly here. Perhaps if no one had been told such things the world would be a different place, but that is essentially the same argument that the nazis made as they eliminated the jews: if the jews never existed the world would be a better place

Wow, I hope to god you're just trolling for kicks. Otherwise that is not just the tiredest, most klicheed analogy, its also worthlessly inaccurate in this case. Saying "If we didn't believe it to be bad, we wouldn't have this problem" does not equate to saying "If these people didn't exist, we wouldn't have this problem". One deals with a simple mindset and social stigmata, the other with human beings that have done nothing except be at the receiving end of negative prejudice.

If anything, the corresponding argument would be : The Nazis would have had a much easier life if they'd just believed Jews, gays, tramps, the poor and crippled are cool, since it wouldn't have hurt them one bit. Unsurprisingly enough, that rings fairly true - without that whole psychopathic genocide bit Hitler might have been a reasonable chap. But I wouldn't advocate going along with this any further, I have no intent of equating your reasons for disliking pornography with racial hatred.

Now, back on topic. The whole issue of demeaning and mistreatment is a simple one - if you care, fight the real issue and not pornography. Yes, mistreatment at the workplace is a social malady - it happens in many, many places though, and not just when a penis and a vagina are involved. I'm all for more humane working conditions across the board - but porn isn't the right scapegoat.

Definitely the most opportune though, as you've so cleverly demonstrated several times - our own phantasys make it very easy to imagine pornography as universally demeaning and unfair, and with the good old socially fueled repression going on, finding a good reason to point at porn and say "Hey, I'm against this" is perfect.

If you really care about the issue of personal and sexual abuse, then go do something about it, and not obscure your goal with a crusade against porn. And if you just want to crusade against porn - well, go meditate or something. You're too tense.
