General / Box Wars
« on: August 08, 2004, 01:26:58 PM »
Ah, this reminds me of my time when I played Quake 2 over the net. There were many fun things to do, including making a model and skin of a regular box (which would be downloaded onto their computer automatically). I can still hear it now... "OMFG THE WALL JUST RAILED ME!" Now that made for some very fun games.

But as to this mod, I can see it growing very old, very quickly. I also see why it died, beacause after playing NS for so long, I have memorized just about every inch of the maps, and once you do that in Box wars, its just a matter of shooting the box that doesn't belong. It is too bad that it does not work, because it would have at least been fun for a bit.

Oh, I don't know. Who defines what 'counts' exactly? They get from the first spawn point in the game all the way through to defeating the final boss in 45 minutes, and they do it using only things that are coded in to the game. How does that not count?
Come now, most of them use every trick in the book. I'm pretty sure that making a tripmine ladder so you can get into the skybox and 'swim' to the next level was not an intended game feature. All things considered, the people who make the speed runs don't really play the same game.

TAK, that would be incorrect.

When you used the 'stopcommandermode' exploit of pre-1.04, you remained on the alien team. The game was tricked into thinking you had just gotten out of the command chair, and so it gave you the marine skin/model/hitbox and weapons. You would remain on the alien team, but would have no class label.  Also, when you pistol whipped a marine (Best way!  :D ) your kill message would show your name in yellow using a marine gun.

What I really want to know, is could you wallwalk? Would that not make for an interesting ambush!?

General / Reducing Rambo Effectivness
« on: July 15, 2004, 01:23:57 PM »
This is a unique idea, to be sure, and needs to be fully understood before the advantages become clear.

As much fun as ninja phase gates and the surprise shotty rush are, they should not remain. With this idea, the rambo can perhaps get a TF/turrets up, awaiting the necessary backup to build the sieges and PG.

In game theory, this also makes sense. Marines are not supposed to survive when found solo. The truth to that currently is debatable, but at least this way the rambos cannot do too much for the team.

I voted Firearms, as I used to play it quite avidly. The incredible amount of bullets needed to kill someone, and the illogical gains provided by armor made me reconsider. I'd be willing to try it, TFC, or HLDM (which I've never played!). The Quake1 remake would be wonderful too.

General / New Cs Source Footage
« on: July 13, 2004, 06:18:18 PM »
Okay, I managed to find a few links to the 5-min CS:Source footage that was High Res. It is 64MB now, and the quality is definitly improved. Unfortunately for us, it is still in German.
So first, the Hi-res CS:Source footage: LINK!
I used the 8BallClan link, worked like a charm

Oh, and for those of you who wanted to know what the people said before being dubbed into German, look here.

Also, I found a link to the E3 video, without all the HL2 parts. Just in case anyone wants it. It appears to be of the same quality.
E3 CS:Source video:LINK!
The link is the third yellow peice of text from the top.

After ravaging the net looking for a WORKING link that I could get those from without registering... well, I just went back to CSnation and registered as "bananaball" Its too bad the videos are not of top quality, but a good fix for any CS fan.

After showing them to my helplessly addicted CS comrade, coupled with the E3 end footage, he was on the verge of hysteria. I think he almost was ready to hurt me, because I did not have any more for him.  :D

Wow, those are really cool. The detail on some of them is amazing. Those are just awesome.

Oh, and TAK, don't you remember Blaq's brief time making NS comic scenes with plastic green men? (BLAQ, GO MAKE MORE)  Here is the topic if you want a laugh, good stuff.

Nice, some well done basics for commanding. Didn't seem all that long as I was reading it though, but looking back... yikes.  :D

I should just start giving shotguns to those people that stay and help build base.  :p
It's always nice to know the commander cares about his base-monkeys, but because of my incredible aim, I usually feel he's wasting his res on me.  :D Base guard is my favorite job anyway. Only with a huge ranged and turf advantage do I ever get any kills, even on 3.0s skulks. :p

Off Topic / Help: New Video Card Needed!
« on: June 15, 2004, 08:40:34 PM »
Wow, thanks Uranium. That more or less confirmed my decision, as I have had my eyes on the 128MB. I appreciate your advice, and warning  ^_^.

And Jefe, I really don't want to have to save up to buy a video card, because as Uranium said, not too much ever works up to use it. I am content to have a moderate card that  can function in all the games available. Worked for me last time, after all  :D.

Off Topic / Help: New Video Card Needed!
« on: June 15, 2004, 12:29:06 PM »
Yes, its that time of year again... upgrade time!

The thing I am looking at so far is videocards, but if this goes like upgrades always do, I'll end up with far more than I bargained for.  ^_^  But, lets just do videocards for now.

First off, I was looking at the ATI Radeon 9800 card, either the 128MB memory, or the 256MB. The 9800 128MB is about $163, which looks pretty good at the moment. The 9800 256MB is about a hundred more, at $251. First question, do I shell out the extra and get the 256, or just go with the 128?

Also, my computer is not as uber as it could be, and while those cards are both AGP 8x, my motherboard only has AGP 4x. As far as I can tell, this makes no real difference, other than the fact that the card performs slower. All I have turned up suggests that they will still run, only at a lower speed. With that in mind, should I abandon the 9800s right off, and either look for a different and cheaper AGP 4x card, go digging for a PCI card, or even something else entirely?

I'm not particularly in any hurry, because while I can run Painkiller on my 64MB GF2 (that I bought years ago for Morrowind), it's not a happy arrangement. I feel it is time to upgrade, and at least before HL2 gets here. (No discussion on the HL2 point!  :D )
