I like that attitude, its too bad thats so hard to do with someone pwning you with the magnum left and right and spawncamping over and over.  I'd actually like to see the magnum disabled in fact.

My HL2 started working again lastnight.

And yeah, the magnum is ridiculous.

Well I'm not that far into the game, only about 1 hour, so hopefully the story will get better.  The NPC dialogue is great, but the part that annoyed me were barney/alex/scientist.

Firstly, barney greets you like "OMG GORDON, REMEMBER ME, WE WERE BEST FRIENDS AND WENT HUNTING AND FISHING TOGETHER AND FROLLICKED IN THE FIELDS", and I just want to think, "no, there were 100 of you that all looked the same and sometimes I threw a grenade at you when you got stuck behind something."  The whole idea of taking characters from HL that there were used MULTIPLE times and then make them into one character just doesn't work for me, especially when that one character acts like your best bud when they acted like a complete stranger in the first.

Then, there's the first encounter with alex.  No spoilers here, but if you played it you know what happens.  That scene reminded me of a bad james bond film and made me laugh (in a bad way).

Like I said, I'm not that far into the game, so chances are it will get better, but I will always be haunted by those first scenes.  :(

Haven't had any real big problems with the physics instagibbing me, but I have had weird effects.  Like if you pick up an object and move it into something, it will flop all over the place like a dying fish.

Yes indeed. Too bad the game's atmosphere makes you feel like you should be running top speed all the time, because there were places I wanted to explore.

I did notice that in the initial "RUN AWAY REAL FAST" scene.  I was immediately upset when I wasn't able to fully explore the areas, which I compulsively do.  I hoped it was only because I didn't have a weapon and that it would slow down later on. <_<

I'll try turning the subtitles on, but I really do think they're too quiet.  In the beginning when there is that guy talking on the TVs everywhere, I'd turn my volume up to try to hear what the soldiers are saying, but they're easily drowned out by the blaring loud TV.  Later on, I still have the same problems, with all the sounds being SUPER LOUD except the soldiers.

Well I'll give my first impressions of the game.

The graphics are gorgeous, and the light maps didn't turn out nearly as bad as the early screenshots.  I do have a stutter every time I walk into a new room, which gets REALLY annoying.

The collision code is a little bit weird, especially when you strafe into an object, you don't slide across like in HL.  Although this seems more "realistic", it makes navigating levels a bit more annoying.  Jumping makes you leap forward at SUPER FAST speeds, making it a nice strategy for getting away from enemies (I thought valve wanted to eliminate retarded hopping..haven't tried the sprint key yet though, so it might be just as fast).

The dialogue and story so far are awful.

Not sure how they managed to mess up the Havok engine, but I've noticed several objects being able to pass through each other.  Perhaps this was done to save on performance, which is understandable.

The "throw" function is really weak, and makes gordon look like a pansy.

Little bells and whistles shine everywhere, and really make the game interesting to explore.

The combine soldiers are really hard to understand.  They almost sounds as if valve accidentally went

Code: [Select]
combineVolume = 0.5;
So yeah, there's my non-fanboyish first impressions.  More to come soon...

Ya know, every forum I go to has one of these posts, but yet no one has been able to say WHY HL2 rules.  Not that I don't believe you, I just get sick of hearing it redundantly without any reason.

General / How To Skulk Better!
« on: November 04, 2004, 07:04:19 PM »
Yeah, what bob said.  Skulks don't attack, they ambush.

Also, use your teammates.  If you see that one of them is camping a corner waiting for a marine to come by, try to lead the unsuspecting marines to him using parasite.  Marines can't resist the becone of an easy skulk kill.

Quote
-use walk often

When it comes to seamingly godlike marines that can't be killed, walk is really your best weapon next to ambushing.  These marines usually like to knife RTs by themselves to lure skulks to their doom.  Walk almost always catches them off-guard (because no one ever does it) and can save your RT.

When you walk, make sure you don't use strafe.  The moment your speed exceeds the normal walk speed, the marine can hear a click or two from your feet, and since some of these guys use headphones, thats all they need.

I like the manuals.  They sometimes provide interesting backstories to characters/weapons/ect, and usually have some cool concept art.  The fact that there's no manual won't bug me in the least, but you gotta laugh at how valve tries to save every penny they can.

I really, really want to get into this beta, mainly because I refuse to pay monthly fees for MMORPGs and so this will be my only chance to try it for free.  If I like it, I'll definitely subscribe.

General / Favorite Map?
« on: October 07, 2004, 01:00:18 PM »
Yeah, what bob said...ayumi would have gotten my vote if it had been there.  I don't care that it kills the super overpowered fades or the jetpackers that can get on top of every hive...and even build on one.  It has PLENTY of res nodes near MS, marines easily have a chance even with the vast spread of the map.

I haven't played the new lost, but the old lost was EXTREMELY unbalanced.  Marines have 2 nodes near MS, and no others without a very long jog.  Even with the best comms, they could never win without a relocation...which usually ended in a long and drug out game.  I did love relocating on that map though...especially to the siege room, but now that the glass is breakable...meh.

I'd like to review every map, but I'm not going to.

General / How Did You Find Ns?
« on: October 06, 2004, 08:28:06 PM »

Sancho did it. Back when I was active in an Action HL clan, he was in my clan's sister/arch-nemesis clan. So we played together all the time. We got a few folks together from the groups trying out random HL mods, and then we tried NS. I was basically hooked and Sancho taught me a good deal so that when I first started pubbing I didn't have to deal with a painful learning process in public. <3 Sancho. And now here I am about a year later so deeply involved in the game that I may never escape. Of course, the old mod club does yell at me every once in a while for not ever playing mods with them anymore.  :help:

Kekeke, we're still active ya know, except now its more random juarez games instead of mods.

Anyway, I can't remember where I heard about NS, but I posted on their forums for about 7 months before 1.0.

General / Ns.org Comments On Structure Blocks..
« on: September 22, 2004, 12:28:06 AM »
Flayra commented a LONG time ago on structure blocking and I believe he said it was a perfectly viable strat, so this "official dev announcement" doesn't mean jack diddly to LM.

I like that ghost idea, has it been suggested to them or did you just come up with that bob?  They need to hear that.
