Off Topic / NS and ID

Well, "Quake" is quite a weird name too.  Anyway, I don't hold anything against it apart from what I already associate with the name: The quasi-scientific claims of ID (not the game), which gives me the shivers.

Zunni resigned by his own decision from the dev team loooooong before any blog of his was made or any forums were hacked. Any claims of him being fired is wrong.

But who are you talking to, if this is constructive criticism? I sure ain't a part of UWE, and I doublt Flayra visits this forum often.

There are some things I agree with in this thread, and some things that are very far off from the reality. I'm not going to attempt to defend it, as it serves no real purpose.

I will instead attempt to shed some light on what the reality UWE and the NS Team has to live with.

TheAdj is very correct when he speaks of the issues of starting your own thing. I've been there myself, and I know it's demanding and takes a lot of work seemingly for nothing.

The main issue with UWE is that it has to make money to live. And that's totally legit. If that means paying less attention to the current NS, so be it. They don't earn money on it, and any potential earnings from loyal customers is way too far ahead to consider.

Investors don't pay attention to missed deadlines, they pay attention to its ability to earn money, and maintaining a free game is not something an investor will benefit from. Investors are there for one thing only, to get more money back than they put in.

So what does UWE have to do? They have to take contract work, form their buisness plan, possibly make a prototype of the game (see Charlie's blog), get contacts and talents, and form something they can actually get investors to look at and get interested in.

Of course, all your gripes aren't with UWE, some are with the NS Team itself, which consist of volunteers (me including). So, what is our pay in this? What's our interest? To have fun -- if we can't have fun maintaining the game, we have nothing here to do. You might claim we have a responsibility to the community or the game, but we actually do not. We have a responsibility to ourselves to have fun with what we do.

However, UWE is tied to NS in such a way that we can't do anything unless UWE backs us up. For example the website, which is handled by UWE alone. In that way, we actually become indirectly tied to UWEs day-by-day financial situation. UWE also controls the direction NS takes, and have an absolute veto to any proposal or change.

I hope this was helpful.

(Btw, I know some will complain to me about it, but I don't run anything here and I am not going to attempt to defend the situation as it is not something I have decided. This is purely informational.)

Nice. If you can keep on to that and keep sampling, it would be of tremendous help when we next time do some optimizations.

I agree. But the ball is in Valve's park now. We've done our part, and it's up to the legal department and such to decide. So, let's cross our fingers :)

We have control over the executed code per frame. The number of frames executed is for the HL code to decide. Even if every frame took one nanosecond, we would not be in control of the number of frames and could end up with 100% cpu.

Anyway, tried to tweak sys_tickrate?

Well then you're in a completely different domain.

HL attempts to squeeze as much as possible FPS from the CPU it can get. We can't reduce the CPU usage, but we can increase the FPS you get from the allowed CPU time with optimizations. I guess it's up to the OS or HL itself to reduce the allowed CPU usage, we can't controll it at all.

But if you find a way of restricting the allowed CPU usage, you should be able to restrict it down a bit and still have the same FPS as you had pre 3.0.5.

Awesome. You might want to measure server FPS at the same time, as the are related, but different metrics and more relevant to the entire issue with hitreg.

Edit: You may have 100% CPU usage in two cases, but 10 server FPS in one, and 100 in another, and the one with 100 will play smoothly.

How is this going to fix NS? I don't see anything about serverside performance!

^^

Touche indeed

*Tak glances at tanke momentarily
*Tak ponders asking on NSF

NS has always been not so hot on the serverside optimization, but still it would be nice to know whats going on, LB makes a good point

I find it strange that most other server operators have said differently after 3.0.5, and even provided us with specific numbers. Best case so far has been Surftown, which had an average of 250% FPS increase for 24 players ... I don't really see the touché in LBs statement unless I get some numbers.

I'd love to get a hand on any performance statistics you got for LM, as well as the server configuration, list of mods etc., to see where the problem is.

Impulse 7 is your friend. It both chuckles as an alien, and says "follow me" as a marine. It's win-win!

The impulses have been moved around a bit, so the follow me for marines actually means follow me for aliens too

i think the order shows means that the hud will indicate you have been issued a waypoint.

"you have been issued a waypoint: please weld confused(by the cc)"

Something like that, yes. It's a small waypoint or order icon with directional arrows. You also get it when a player looks at you and issues a "weld me", "heal me" or "follow me".

As mentioned in the other thread, I'd love to see some performance logs to continue working on the performance.

It is strange that LM doesn't get anything, when servers like Surftown has gotten well over 100% server FPS boost during heavy load times.

I have to say that these are some pretty sweet changes.  The skulk wallwalking and hand grenade changes are especially cool.

Oh they are. The grenades feel totally like a new weapon now.

That sounds weird, because both NSA and Surftown reported huge server FPS gains on both Linux and Windows.

Do you have any post/pre statistics with cpu usage/server fps according to the number of players? I'd be very interested to have a look at it, to identify where the bottlenecks are.

No, the shotgun still has its old range (700 units), but the falloff between 500 and 700 has been removed.
