General / Ns Identity Consistency

i think NS, more than the other games i've played, kinda demand you to have a name that's pronouncable (yes, i know, i know [OldF]Niteowl-TSA is a mouthful), but the zillioins of variations of leet speak names and gobbly gook that make it HELL on a commander to give orders, really is painful. Likewise it makes it hard to ask so and so to get to double, or please drop another DC, or just go fade already.

in short, his restrictions make names that are usually easier to see at first sight.

but, uh, i'm not sure why he's setting that restrictions for the site.
[snapback]33685[/snapback]
I think your name would become "OldFNiteowl TSA" or maybe "Niteowl TSA" or "NiteowlTSA" or something.

But Flayra said he'd definitely allow people to change their name after the corrections are made, so you'd be able to change it to "Niteowl". Or "Niteowl TSA" since spaces are allowed.

Many of us are unaffected though. Like "Guspaz". Nothing changes. Cheez loses his !, but I don't think his forum name had that either.

And yeah, somehow I suspect this ties into the BUS, and somehow these names will be used in-game.

I listened to that interview the other day (the one from the 15th), at this point 3.0b6 is expected to have phase one of the BUS implemented in code (But disabled and hidden), and at that point Flayra said they'd let slip a bit more info since the BUS will be closer to completion.

Flayra was also saying pretty grand things about the game though, saying that no other game has done it before, and it will change the way that ALL games are played. He said it may not be as unique or different as the FPS/RTS hybrid genre he helped define, but still pretty big.

I don't use Random... because I go Alien 2/3 of the time. It's always been this way for 2 years, which is why I'm better at Alien than Marine.

Or if you get picked up against your will you can just hit your USE key and you will drop. If you do that and run away from the lerk, while telling him off on voicechat, he will get the idea. So it's not a big issue.

As an onos, using your tusk ONCE to get the knockback to move an ally seems OK to me. Onos tusk sends skulks and gorges flying through the air, so once should be enough.

DooM 3 will be moddable, it's not like Id just abandons a game post-release. They have many patches for years, and always release the mod source for much mod making. In fact, they release MORE source than VALVe does, you can actually do more with a Quake 3 mod than you can with a Half-Life mod.

Also, John Carmack said way back when that when DooM 3 comes out, he's going to release the ENTIRE source to Quake 3 under the GPL, as he did with Quake 2, Quake, DooM, and Wolfenstein.

Meh, if a firearms server goes up, I'll probably try it once to try the mod, and then never ever enter the server again.

I hate all realism mods. I managed to become decent at Reaction Quake 3, but I never liked it much. Played it mostly to play with a friend.

Somebody earlier said that we'd never get many people for a TFC server... Well, considering how the CS server was always LOCKED and only RS could play on it, I don't think the community size really matters :p

Off Topic / If You Use Internet Explorer

Another little beef with firefox - it doesn't figure out the size of images first (like IE does) and move all the crap around on the screen before it's loaded - The result is that viewing an image-heavy page causes the text to fly and scroll all over the place, so you have to wait for every image to load before you can read anything.
If that's the only reason you're not using Firefox, it's a fairly minor one.

This is not the exact thing you're talking about, but you can have Firefox display images as they load instead of placeholders like it normally does.

There are various ways to set an advanced preference... I prefer this method:

1) In the address bar, type "about:config"
2) Find the setting"browser.display.show_image_placeholders", or if it doesn't exist, add it, type boolean
3) Set it to false.

Now then, keep in mind that the thing you describe is caused by image tags that don't have widths and heights pre-set... This affects BOTH browsers equally. Are you sure you're not just viewing different websites in IE and in Firefox?

EDIT: The fix I posted above will HELP the issue, as as soon as images start loading the browser will know how big they are.

DoD == Haet
TFC == FTW

Seriously though, I really do strongly dislike DoD... I'm an admin over at Kustom Kettles which started as a DoD community and then added NS due to a merger. I tried hopping on the DoD server, to try to have a bit of a presence there, but I really disliked the whole experience.

On the other hand, the mod I was playing before NS was TFC, and various TF based mods such as Q3F. I still like TFC to this day, and would LOVE for this to be the new server.

I missed out on the TFC RS night, as I miss out on many RS nights, because I can never remember them, and that was too bad... If we don't get a TFC server, we should have some more TFC RS nights, and this time I'll join in.

General / What Resolution Do You Play In?

1280x1024... But that's with 6xAA and 16xAF, so it's running a bit slow even on my Radoen 9700 Pro. I'd like to see if I reduce AA to 2x and AF to 8x performance, how 1600x1200 performs.

The issue here is not my videocard, but my tired old CPU.

I had planned to upgrade the whole bloody machine in time for DooM 3, but now the Radeon X800 XT PE, which SHOULD have been available in MAY, now might not show up in large quantities until OCTOBER, and forget about the PCI-Express version, which means I can't go for that new Shuttle XPC because it has a PCI-Express slot. So now I'm thinking it'll have to be some other Shuttle XPC with an AGP slot... and that will have to wait on the X800 XT PE. Blast.

General / I'm Fed Up With This

I particularly like the way AMX voting is done. I think it would work extremely well on Lunixmonster, perhaps there's an Adminmod plugin for it (or perhaps AMX could be run just for the one AMX plugin).

The way it works is, 20 seconds or so before the mapchange, a menu pops up with a few random maps (5-6?). People then vote on the one they want the next map to be. The currently winning map is displayed, reducing the everybody-voted-for-different-maps-so-no-map-won syndrome.

This works in this situation because it ONLY occures at the END of the round, therefore no rapid map changes. The maps presented for vote are also RANDOM, so while there's lots of choice (due to the number of random maps selected for voting), you CANNOT play the same map over and over.

It does have a downside though. Because the winning map is displayed, people have a tendency to vote for the winning map. So usually whatever the first person votes for ends up winning. This would easily be solved by displaying either the top TWO maps, or displaying the votes EACH map has.

Anyhow, it's a great system and has worked wonders for us over at Kustom Kettles. Keeps the server nice and fresh, and lets people switch to Combat when they want some.

General / Spawncamping
« on: March 31, 2004, 06:43:02 PM »
By some of the definitions I've heard here, any kind of offensive action against the alien or marine base is spawncamping. Should we then never attack the hive/marine start, and allow games to go on forever?

Not sure who the "you" is, but no, that's not at all what I'm saying. I'm saying that you MUST kill enemies as they spawn if you are attacking a target in their spawn. It's the way the game is designed. In DoD there is no excuse, there aren't game-critical structures placed IN the spawns. In NS (alien side used as example), you have RTs, OCs, DCs, and let's not forget the hive, all right in the middle of the team spawns. You can't hit those structures without firing at the enemy.

Back on topic, IMO it's not spawncamping to shoot/kill players while you're attacking something.

For example, if you're attacking the hive, killing skulks as they spawn isn't spawn camping, it's neccessary (Otherwise, they kind of kill you...). Or if you're attacking the CC in combat, you need to kill the marines as they spawn, otherwise you can never chomp on the CC.

Spawncamping is (IMO) when a player is JUST killing spawning players without the goal of attacking something else.
