Off Topic / I need beta testers
« on: May 05, 2005, 11:00:22 PM »
I've written a sort of file-upload service that is designed to be like http://www.putfile.com, but for text files (HTML/JS/CSS/TXT/etc).

I've even contacted the guy who runs PutFile, since we've communicated in the past via the ServerMatrix forums. The guy is interested in cross-promotion (He directs people to me as the text solution, I direct people to him as the media solution.

The problem is, before he'll start this up, I need to beta test! I need to make sure my site is relatively stable before hundreds of thousands of people start banging on it.

So please, take a look at the site (URL follows), bang on it, TRY to break it, use it, whatever! Just try to find things wrong so I can fix them :)

Here's the link: http://tekfile.net/

Yeah, too bad they never removed the limits on HL. TOO BAD BACORN!

What kind of limits?

Weapon restriction for one.

Texture resolution for another. It probably would have taken them a few minutes to allow 24-bit textures with a reso of 512x512 instead of the current (8-bit textures at 240x240).

Heck, they added support for highres textures for the detaile textures. I was even able to use that to trick the game into displaying highres regular textures.

General / What would you want to see in Source version?
« on: May 05, 2005, 10:39:27 PM »
I want a flat out exact direct port with no enhancements.

Let me explain. This type of port is the fastest to get out the door, and immediately gives us access to many of Source's features. For example, you'd suddenly have surroundsound, which is an enormous improvement in audio. There are also way too many little things that are just "better" to even think of all at once.

Once that initial port is out, then they could start working on updating maps, models, textures, etc.

That said, Flayra made some comments that are along the same line as the above, which I've been saying since before Source-based games even came out.

I'm terribly surprise that Swift didn't make a White Marine comic out of one of these yet :p

Personally I can't connect to GameSurge at all right now. Not a single one of their servers.

Actually I'm finding myself unable to connect to any IRC server. Very odd.

Actually, check this out, and give feedback: http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index....showtopic=92484

Won't help us currently, but what if we could get it in a future version?

It should be fairly simple to make a plugin that forces FF on for GLs even if FF is off. As in, the only weapon that would do FF would be the GL.

That would solve the main problem we have FF on to fix.

I didn't get the Tetris part at first, but I rewatched it.

The Zelda part was hilarious. I love the way he walked  XD

Yes, but the sword swing was off, in the game it just appears in front of him, then dissappears when you let go. So essentially it goes straight out, it doesn't swing.

But the Zelda boomerange had me laughing :p

EDIT: Oh, and my dream is to have a group where each person does an instrument best matched to their voice. So whoever can sound most like the instrument (Pitch too) does that instrument with their voice. Said group would then perform videogame music. Including lots and lots by Nobuo Uematsu.

The difference between this and a cappella being that we would actually try to sound like the instruments instead of just making pitched noises

I don't really get how you're all coming up with such low prices. I looked up the items and compiled a list.  These are the lowest preowned prices I could find.. These could drop even more depending on the condition of the items.

XBOX preowned - $140.00
Halo 2 preowned - $24.50
Halo preowned - $13.50
Wolfenstein preowned - $8.80
StarWars/Tetris preowned - $9.00
DVD Remote & Receiver preowned - $13.50 (can be gotten for around $20.00 factory sealed)
The Simpsons Hit and Run preowned - $12.34
Controller used - $18.00

That adds up to a lot more than $150.00

You're forgetting two things:

1) "pre-owned" prices are jacked WAY up from what they are actually worth used. Stores sell pre-owned stuff to make a big profit, people sell used stuff to make some cash from something they already have.

2) All the extras don't mean much. All people see is either "Xbox", or "Xbox and some stuff".

Keep in mind that the XBox 360 is going to be unveiled May 13th, and will probably be on sale by christmas. And it has more processing and graphics power than ANY desktop computer money can buy.

FF is a part of The Lunixmonster. Wether or not you love or hate it is a different matter. You'd be talking about getting rid of something that's been there a long time. LM is all about the things that make a game a game. Not quitting, not laming, keeping your shots and bites to the enemy, it's all about skill, not spraying everything. I say it stays

Umm, no. In Lunixmonster's history, FF has not been on for very long, and it was OFF much longer than it was on. It is most certainly NOT a "part" of Lunixmonster, just a holdover from a previous beta with unbalanced grenades that people got used to.

No offence to newer players, but somehow I feel like the only people voting in this poll should be those who have played on Lunixmonster long enough to have both played with it on, AND remember what it was like when it was off. People who joined the server just a few months ago have only seen one side of the issue, so they're not exactly objective.

EDIT: BTW, my definition of "been around long enough" would mean people who have played on Lunixmonster, by one name or another, since before 2004 or 2005. Maybe include people from the first half of 2004, but I can't honestly remember when FF was turned on.

Let me put it this way, if you played on the server when it was Evolutionarily Challenged's Nano Gridlock, you've been around long enough :p

last two parts were just something you can do. if you spin around enough while holding use, you can build any # of structures at once. fastbuild was on for those, btw, figured it would make the vid smaller anyway.

That is not a bug, it's exactly how it should work. As you spin around, the target you are building switches between the buildings. You are not building multiple structures at once, but instead are rapidly switching between which one you build.

You had fastbuild on, so they all finished rather quickly.

Think of it this way; you're dividing your build time among the structures.

OK, since none of you wusses replied, here's another.

I present to you, The Doctor Man!

These would suck less if I were drawing them with a mouse. I'm using a trackpad in MS PAINT, not the bet combo :p

EDIT: BTW, I swithed over from GIF to PNG. That is because you can save right to PNG from MSPAINT without destroying your colours. If you try to save as GIF, MSPAINT will mangle those colours. The forums seem to be happy with PNG.

One would hope that this is because they are preparing for a co-ordinated assault from multiple vectors with strategic choices of classes for maximum effect (Groups of one onos, one or two lerks, and a gorge, for example).

Of course that's never the case :(
