Title: Broken Motherboard
Post by: BobTheJanitor on April 19, 2004, 11:10:02 PM
Yeah I was playing on the CS server tonight and in what I believe was probably a message straight from the lord almighty, my computer died. I applied my massive technical knowledge and finally came up from the innards of my computer gasping for air and holding aloft a broken motherboard. Le sigh.

So I've got an RMA request in with MSI now, but I know how MB manufacturers work and I probably won't be able to get back up and running for at least two weeks. If I panic I might try and install NS on my girlfriend's computer here, but I kind of doubt it'll work. (does NS even run in software mode?) So I'll spam up the forums whenever I can, but otherwise I'm out of the game for a little while.

In conclusion:  :(

Why don't we just let you "borrow" one from work until yours comes back from RMA?  I think we've got an A7N266 in the back or an A7V8X-MX just lying around.  Five finga discount yall  ^_^

He should remember our friend John playing on this Voodoo 3, and he played software..  if moving 2 steps then locking up is playing then the answer is YES!

Confused: would have to have athlon XP and ddr266 support, uhm... onboard sound and an AGP slot. That's about it.

Sancho: Yes. It is the devil's handiwork.

lf: How can you survive? It hasn't even been 24 hours and my head's about to pop!

Radeon: The board that I just borrowed from work doesn't freaking work either. AAAAAARGH. I got it to boot, started the overlay of XP, it locked up, I rebooted, and it was doing the SAME DAMN THING. Methinks my power supply may be doing bad things, or something. If so, I bought that from work too, and I want a NEW ONE!!!! (and I don't think we have any 550's in stock, either)

Fewpid: I may have to try it in software mode. Or I could put my card in her machine. But then she might go crazy as I would be playing on her computer and she wouldn't even have anything to do while I'm ignoring her... I foresee no good coming from that.

Everyone: WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!

i'm in the SAME wagon! i lost TWO motherboards! both within weeks of eachother! one credited to my stupid 250W power supply finally burning out and taking the mobo with it, and the other was due to my... um... noobiness with hardware? (okay, i broke it while i was trying to put the WRONG ram in it... EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES!! EVERYONE!!!)

cost me 400+ dolla to fix AND whiped the HD. however, i'm STILL chuggin away at steam with my beautiful worn out 56k modem! i should be playin soon again...

so yeah, sorry about the mobo loss. it sucks, i know

Ive had my MSI board for over a year now,  havent had any issues at all.  But the onboard sound is a real bitch sometimes,  especially if its enabled with a soundblaster installed.  (happened to me by accident)

i say to you, bob: i think one of the guys i know across town has it. (prof chaos)

The reason i got rid of it is that the onboard sound failed. (makes a lovely low end buzz now)

its an ecs k7s5a. version 3.1 i belive
specs and stuff

i bought my "new" one used on ebay for about half market price, you could always try that.

and then i broke out!

also note that i even tried to spell good for you guys.

well.. no.. it wasn't entirely all my fault... because.. um.. *the guy* who put my mobo in didn't put a support in that corner of the mobo. so while putting the ram in i bent the board a bit.

Got yet another board that I'll be trying out tonight, probably with a new power supply, as I think my PS may be what's eating motherboards. I just tested the board here at work, and it does boot. So we'll see what happens. I did get to play a wee bit of NS on my girlfriend's computer last night. After much tweakage I got NS to run in D3D mode in 640x480 and with NO special nice effects at ALL. I totally sucked with that hideous frame rate and with her generic unresponsive two button mouse. But I did at least get half of a game in before she came home and started screaming at me for using her computer!  :(

So we'll see what happens tonight...

Edit: Okay, I tried the second board from work. It ALSO is screwed up. There's probably a reason these boards are sitting in a pile in the back instead of being used in computers. However a friend of mine whom you might have seen as 'Admojostrator' on the forums here lent me a working P3 board and chip, and the SDRAM to go with it. So then all I had to do was load up XP on another hard drive (it refused to read my 160 GB drive correctly) and now I'm finally up and running... With just a ton of drivers to update, steam and half life and a million games to reinstall, a good web browser, IRC... I'm in for a long night.

BUT! It's working for the moment!  :D
