Title: Help me!
Post by: devicenull on March 30, 2005, 08:58:51 PM
Finally got the hardware working on my new system.
I put in the XP cd, setup looks normal, but freezes, every time on "setup is starting windows", from what google says its something to do with the PCI bus.  But nothings plugged into the pci bus.

I'm annoyed.  I need help.

The system is going to run memtest overnight, to ensure it isnt memory.

Mind describing what exactly it has hooked up, generic in terms of type, or even specific if you'd like.

One of the ram sticks had a couple sectors fail during the memory test, but only after like 20 retests, so I'm not too worried.  I've been told a bios flash might help.

My suggestions: First and foremost, update the bios for the love of god! Chances are that will fix it. If nott, take the stick that caused issues, even minor, out. No reason not to, as you can run fine without it and just stick it in later, if the problem is something else. Next, I would try an older video card in place of the 9600. If that all fails, I'd be suspicious of the mobo itself. Just my thoughts.

Also, there are plenty of things in your system that use the PCI bus, even if they're not in the slots. Go through the bios and disable USB, onboard audio, ethernet, and any hard drive controllers you're not using. That'll clear the bus up, and you can re-enable that stuff when you've got the OS installed.
