Title: The longest you've gone without sleep
Post by: CForrester on January 01, 2005, 11:52:04 PM
The longest I've ever gone without sleep was about three days. They were terrible days and I felt awful by the end of it. Right now, though, I've been awake for about 34 hours.  I'll probably be going to bed soon. I feel like a zombie.

What's the longest you've ever gone without sleep? Why?

Less than 30... on sleep-overs. But that's it.

I've done roughly 30 hours before...  I could go for more, but honestly the older I get the more I like sleeping, and the novelty of being able to say "I once stayed awake for X hours" really starts to seem unimportant after 24 hours of wakefulness...

How do you manage that in a 24 hour day?

Even if you nap, you must have skipped your nap at least once in your life...

3, 3-4 days?

Can't remember why, but I know I wouldn't do it again. The old paranoia starts to kick in around day 2.

6 Days (Or if you wanna be exact, about 135 hours)

Was travelling and doing LANs and testing out the drug "enhancing" properties of grapefruit juice. Mostly the LANs and grapefruit juice thing though. I slept a good day and a half after that. Ahhh... I love thee summer.

I can do 24 no problem, I run into trouble around 48, A friend of mine who is an enginering major stayed up for 4 days, slept for four hours and stayed up for another 4 days during finals, but he was taking massive amounts of amphetamines so it doesn't really count.

Show me someone who can stand a week with less then an hour of sleep each night, and Ill be impressed. :-D

Other wise you can stay up as long as you dont fall unconcious :) (by mentally forcing yourself that is)

not true, you will die from sleep deprivation before you die of starvation [if you were staying up and not eating]

Approximately 60 hours, but I did that a few times over the course of a week.

How do they know that?  its not like anyone has ever acctually died from sleep deprivation...  The best efforts of man to not sleep indefinitely have all ended in either insanity or just outright failure.

I've always wondered that myself... how the heck can you die from sleep deprivation?  after a certain amount of days your brain just stops functioning and you go to sleep, you don't die =P

Heck do you think I wanted to risk drowning in a cereal bowl?  One minute I'm eating breakfast on a glorious 5th day of non-sleep, next thing I know my parents are pulling my face out of a pool of milk and cheerios =3

Actually there's a mental disorder which kills you by sleep deprivation. You sleep less and less, then you snuff it.

On a related note, lack of sleep leads to severe chemical changes in the brain, ususally triggering psychosis.

Sleep deprivation also aggravates any EXISTING mental problems, ie ADHD, schizophrenia, etc. It messes with your genetic structure (bits stop working), all your systems slow down (immune system for example), and it slashes your life expectancy. Nearly all experiments end up with the rapid death of the test subject. As far as I can find, the longest amount of time a person stayed awake was ELEVEN DAYS, and that was a Stanford experiment. He slept for over 14 hours afterward. He suffered a few hallucinations but nothing else.

I would however caution that he's probably the exception rather than the rule.

Edit - NATURALLY, every test subject would finally collapse due to the increasing strain on the body, however lab test subjects have a gene altered so that they are physically incapable of sleep.

Three and a half days straight. I figured it was high time to get some sleep after developing a tic and seeing shadows dancing in my peripheral vision.

This thread also reminded me of a passage from a book called Winterdance, a true story about a man named Gary Paulsen in his first Iditarod race. (A 1,000 mile sled-dog race through Alaska, from Anchorage to Nome)

He starts to hallucinate about 1/4 of the way into the race (this is days into it, already) in an area called Dalzell Gorge A.K.A. "The Burn" a barren Alasken hellhole with very little snow to cover the  trees and rocks. Trails are nearly non-existent, and for an amatuer like Gary, it was absolute madness.

It started simply enough. I was hacking through a tree to loosen the sled when a thin man wearing a corduroy suit jacket, glasses, and a tie stepped up to my right and smiled.

"It's about time somebody showed up to help me," I said. "This ^^ is getting rediculous."

And he helped. He did not speak but he helped hold the tree while I chopped and grabbed at the handlebar when the sled blew forward, jumping on at the last second to ride to the next fallen tree.

On the way we passed a woman, quite lovely and completely nude, sitting on a grassy hummock. She beckoned to me to come but I shook my head. "I've got to keep moving." I said. "It's the race..."

She nodded and ran up to us, light and lovely on her feet, and jumped on the sled. "I'll ride with you."

The other man was still there and I worried that there would be a mess because he seemed overly interested in her and I was intersted as well, and getting damn jealous and wondering how I could have some time alone with this beautiful creature and I blinked and they were gone and I was looking out over the dog team at the west coast of California just north of Santa Maria. There were surfers working ten-foot curls, men and women both, and I was pleased to see the female checker who had told me to to watch out for the down part of Rainy Basin wearing a string bikini hanging ten on a short board, and I blinked and there was a herd of wildebeest being chased by wild dogs led by Cookie (his lead dog) and I blinked and there was my wife beckoning for me to release the team and rest.

"Let go," she said. "I'll catch them. Don't worry..."

I nearly did, started to let go with one hand, but I blinked and she was gone and the dogs had stopped and Cookie was looking up at a Moose.

I blinked. I was learning faster now and while I couldn't make the hallucinations go away, it seemed I could change them by blinking, much like changing television channels.

The Moose however, did not go away.

Sleep is good, oh yes, sleep is good. :)
