HL2 AI Movie (http://mirrors-av.club-internet.fr/pub/games/nofrag/halflife2/videos/hl2_nofrag_us.avi)

This 5 minute film shows some flaws that 1 person encountered, I haven't encountered this before but it's for you to watch. I should try that out myself

OMFG!!! COMPUTER SIMULATED AI DOESN'T ACT HUMAN!!!

I have yet to see a game that does AI half as good as HL2.  I did the exactly the same thing in farcry, I crouched in a bush and threw rocks (you can throw rocks to make sound and destract opponents if you haven't played the game yet...) at a snipers head for almost a full 15 minutes (I was reacearching weather rocks acctually did damage when thrown at opponents, they don't)  Most 3D games have areas where the AI's detection is horribly weak, the only way to mask the overlooked areas is to make the game simple enough that there is nothing to hide behind and exploit it.  Most 3D games would simply rather risk AI irregularities being exploited then build the game in such a way they that they can't.  HL AI has always worked based on point detection, the enemies don't shoot at you unless thier ocular unit has a clear line of sight at some predetermined point on your body (in HL2's case it seems to be the orgin where your crosshair meets your model, which is sensical considering that most of the time that means if you can shoot them they can shoot you)...  This is why you can hide behind walls and put full clips of LMG into offence chambers if you sneak up just right; offence chambers won't attack you unless they can see the center of your body.

If you can find a game that those conditions aren't true for I will give you a cookie and then some.

I don't know anything about the way the hitboxes are managed in HL2, but if you can improve an onos hitbox to the point you can put shots between its legs, you can do the same, then you can improve the combine hitboxes too.  Better valve be lazy on one condition like hitboxes then practically every game model the way ID did with doom 3.

Newsflash: HL2 doesn't use pixle hit detection!  or did you miss that info when it came out long long ago.

[edit] sorry, I didn't mean to sound offense tooky, I just get frustrated with the level of realistic simulation that people expect out of the HL2 engine.  I mean, for God sakes, it's a game engine!  If you want real life get off your damn computer!

It's also interesting to note that some of these are likely to be fixed.

The 'Blocking Doors' section is sily too - that is simple scripting.  Obviously in the e3 section the blocking of the door was scripted.  In the garage section it was not.

But truly - Half-Life 2 did not promise to give us intense AI.  More often than not the combine soldiers will refuse to move or take cover when under fire.

SwiftSpear, I'm not the one who criticized the HL2 AI, I myself find it very realistic, it's just something I saw and wanted to see what you guys thought of it.

HL2 AI is probaly the best AI in game right now. If you ever actually give the AI a chance to react. Usually we would just kill the ai when we see them. But if you take the time, The AI will show you alot of stuff they are capable of.

HL2 AI is better than any other game's out there for sure (but playing HL:S makes me think that it is just a little improved over the original HL). The point is that they did say the AI would be much better than it is. They claimed over and over again that the Combine figured out how to do it themselves without scripting. They said that the whole game would be like this, but it isn't.

Intensity: They may be capable of doing more things, but Valve should of thought of making them do it quicker.

Played Halo or Halo 2?  Halo 2 is, without a single doubt, the greatest example of incredible AI.  It amazes me how realistically smart the enemies can be.  HL2 really does pale by comparison.

i thought halo 1 ai was better than halo 2 ai...

i was totally unimpressed with the ai in halo 2... the elites just seemed to sit there and stuff... once in a while i'd see something sweet like an elite try to sneak up behind a bud, but was negated when the stupid thing didn't realize that i was running top speed behind him and laid my rifle butt upon his neck....

i only played it on the setting under legendary (hard?) tho... so maybe that was my problem

as for half life 2 ai, it's good. i liked it. however, after beating half life 2 on normal and then going back and playing half life source on normal, i must say, i had a harder time fighting the grunts than i did combine soldiers. just seemed like the grunts worked together and ran for cover more often than the combine. the combine seemed to just stand there...

Halo 2's legendary AI is flawless.

halo 2 legendary AI is nothing spectacular, the only reason its "legendary" mode is becuase they do more damage then you with weapons to make it seem harder. i played it and i see elite's climb on boxes for no reason, or run behind cover and just stand there while i kill them etc. or they just run around in the open doing nothing

They only seem like minor flaws to me... Perhaps a mod could improve the AI a bit? (Having it aim for anywhere on the entire model, with appropriate damage for hitting different sections)

Like I said, you can throw rocks at a guys head in farcry, and if they can't see you they just sit there aiming off into oblivion.  If you can't be seen they don't not shoot at you, they don't even look for you unless they have seen or heard you once.

there isn't a "better" ai becuase they are all the same. I don't know of any good AI to be honest. But Halo 2's AI isn't the best.

I say we quit bashing AI's because there wil always be flaws, and until that day comes in the future when the AI actually start to think like real humans and have 0 flaws,  then machines obviously would control the world by then.

gg judgement day

Jefe, I think you're forgetting this little game called Black and White....(which is going to pale in comparision to Black and White 2)

I've yet to see any AI impress me, including HL2. To be honest, i don't really expect much in the way of AI when it comes to games, when it all comes down to it, it's all hide behind rock or open door. Now, when it comes to locking a door on an enemy, only to have an enemy run off, phone a hire company, rent a bulldozer, wait for delivery, get in said bulldozer and knock down the building you're in, THEN i'll be impressed.

Half-Life 2, Farcry, Halo 2, Doom 3, infact, anything with any shred of AI, i've not been impressed by a single one, but then again, if you're just playing games to bitch about the AI, maybe you should stop playing games. :)

But as an exception to the above statement, if it's something really retarded, as my teammate in Halo 2 who spent 5 minutes driving around in circles because he obviously didn't know how to stop the warthog, sometimes the AS (Actual Stupidity) stands out a little more than the AI.

I have to concede on this point.  The driver AI is atrocious.

I like pinball AI, how all those twirly thingies and such keep flinging the ball around, always managing to get it in the bottom hole! Pure genius.
