Title: Half-life 2
Post by: Nuketheplace on October 20, 2004, 03:46:14 PM
So I booted up my computer today and started up steam.  Getting ready to play ns I was greeted with something different.  There was that little "Unlocking Game Files" thing that you saw when you first got Counterstirke:Source.  Then I look below the little status bar and see it says now unlocking Half-Life 2.  Will someone please tell me whats going on?

They unlocked.. certain parts. Not quite sure why
Though I'm now able to browse the GCF files with gcfscape, which I can't remember doing before.

Edit: Congrats on 200 posts.. unless your postcount got edited previously.. in which case uh.. something.

I read on some thread on the steam forums that it is like half of the key you need to unlock the files and when the game is released they send you the other part.

I didn't preload HL2 either, but it doesn't make any of us weirdos. I just didn't quite care to have the files sitting there, taking up space without having any immediate purpose.

I didn't preload it either. I like to have a copy in my hands.

Aye. Why waste precious bandwidth on preloading unless you plan on buying it online? If you buy the retail version, you don't need the preloaded files.

well, apparently most are preloading it even IF they buy it from the store.  they just simply want to have it already residing on their hard-drives, ready to be installed as soon as they can get a cd-key (freeing themselves from the cd-install hassle)

lazy, eh?

Ultra-lazy. And these are the people that will complain about bandwidth as soon as you post a few pictures in a thread or place custom user icons on your game server.

I'll be buying it online, so eventually I'll be downloading it anyway. I just didn't see much point in downloading it two months in advance. Plus I may or may not be wiping my harddrive and reformatting it before the release, so it'd have been a waste to get it twice.

Grimm, you just need to backup the GCFs on CD.  They also compress really well, you can do all the source ones in 3-4 CDs.

How can you make a shrine without the cdcase/box? HOW?!

Gold version gets a box anyway, along with all the other stuff (although all I really want it for is the soundtrack CD).

My preload seems to be stuck at 69%. I don't know why. It just sits there. I don't want to have another 31% to download when I finally buy it.

Maybe Valve likes that number. My preload is stuck at zero for some reason. :p

Hey, has it been confirmed that if you buy the Gold package off of Steam, you actually get the game on disc in addition to all the other bonus stuff?  I've been looking around without much luck, and I'm trying to decide whether to buy it on Steam (having gotten my free Bronze pack makes it worthwhile) or just buy it at the store.  Because, like others, I want my CDs/DVD!

Isn't gold twice the price of bronze? Although you get a HAT! Come on guys, free hat!

Gold comes with the soundtrack CD of Half Life 2. If there was no soundtrack CD, I'd pick up silver along with everyone else, but since it's there, and since I'm a music freak, I gotta go for it.

I'm going to guess the "Unlocking" of HL2 files was for hammer/teh sdk... since I'm seeing a fair number of "c17" textures in the texture window.
