Title: Garrr The Pain!
Post by: Asal on August 12, 2004, 09:44:33 AM
Alright, I don't know what happened, and neither do Johnjacob or Kodiac.  BUT -
None of us can connect to any NS servers anymore.  Oh, we can connect, and sure, I can even join a team...but at about 30 seconds in, I get booted RIGHT back out, and with only some piece of crap error that means absolutely nothing to me.  I'll go try to log these errors, and post them here, but if anyone knows anything about it, help us out please.  :help:

Turn down your nub meter. Write the error down. Return and report.  ;)

(AHH I HAVE A PROBLEM BUT I CAN'T TELL YOU WHAT IT IS CAN YOU FIX IT?)

I've been plauged by the same problems lately. When I get home, ill post some of the more fun errors I get, aside from all my maps and client.dll are different from the servers (yet it still lets me join.)

I was getting an awesome authentication type error that would randomly boot me. Fixed  it by logging out of steam, 'trying' to log in with a bogus email and password, then logged in normally.

For the record, I figured one of my bros would come on and put a few up, but it looks like I'm alone in this.  Let me get a few for you (if the server's not full, I don't want to kick anyone just to write down a few nub errors)

Yeah this happened to me once.

I logged all the way out, rebooted, logged back in, turned out there was a steam update that hadn't worked. Once it updated, all was well.

Yes.  Immortal did that, and I've thought about that, but I have absolutly no clue what I would be able to do to fix it.  Any ideas, or am I simply doomed?

I only get this error when connected to a router, and using my mic. I know 100% that me using voicecommunication is the cause. On my 28k, it's absolutely fine. You use your mic alot?

log out of steam, log back in. retry
log out of steam, restart, log back in. retry
log out of steam, turn computer off, unplug rounter, wait for 300s, reconnect, boot, log back in. retry

edit: if all else fails, blame it on hardware

Hmmmm.....  Well doubt this will be any help.... cause I'm a Nub when it comes to networking, but If you use a router that will screw with your internet connection too.  I know whenever I'm on my family's Linksys I can't play any of the MMORPGs (everquest, Star wars Galaxies... etc.)  And normally I have a high ping on the NS servers.  You can try hooking the computer directly into the Tower and avoid the Router... that may help.

there are 3 of them i nteh same house....so the router is there so they can all use the internet/sare files  so i don't think taking the router away is an option

ok, i have tried everything suggested in here....and i connected.  But it disconnected and gavge me #gameUI_DisconnectedFromserver.  there were 11 people on ns_hera.

Then i tried again.  this time, ns froze, no error message.  Help?

EDIT: again, and i got this wierd one that looked like a box with a small star on the bottom left corner.  I couldnt get a pic, ns crashed and my cpu shut down too.

HELP!

EDIT (again) :  I was just playing single player opposing force, and it worked fine, but all the multiplayer things are still weird.

And here is another handy error for you....

Your .dll [cl.dlls\client.dll] differs from the servers

I just reinstalled it five minutes before, and restated.

Also, NS does NOT appear in my games, althought there is a nsp folder in the proper directory.

PS:Does anyone else's brain hurt? mine does.....but that might just be the normal state of confusion

that's because you didn't install it right fool.

Okay, I was on for a while just now, but it seems to still give the same problems.  Total reinstall, the works. I lose.

Anyone got any ideas?  I got some errors for you:

UserMsg: Not present on client 192
CL_Parse_Version:  Server is protocol -495973390 instead of 47.
CL_ParseServerMessage: Illegible server message: svc_bad

That's all I could get.  Try number 5 (number four also gave me svc_bad) crashed NS.

Gah, I thought I warned lb about the new hlds updates >.<
The quality of the updates has been going down the drain lately
Pull the router out, try again

ok.  I just reinstalled ns for the 4th time, and tried to join.  Now, i can stay for maybe a minute, sometimes two. then i am disconnected.  No error message, but picking through the console i found this:

Host_Error: UserMsg: Not Present on Client 209

What is this, and what does it do, and how do i fix this?

EDIT:  Just reinstalled steam and Ns, gave me this error:

Client sent drop
Title: Garrr The Pain!
Post by: devicenull on August 18, 2004, 08:44:07 PM
Not present on client means you just joined at a bad time.. theres some bug in ns that sends that randomly, try a reconnect :p

Did you try downgrading your router firmware.. it sounds like you guys are lagging very very badly.. go on broadbandreports.com under tools, run tweak test and line packet loss test, report back with results :p

Its a router problem.  I had the exact same thing.

Basically what you do is put +clientport (porthere) and forward that port to the computer via the router.

ie, my brother and I both play on steam, so we had to use different ports: For him, I created a shortcut for the game, and put +clientport 27007 in the command line (any port will do, I just put a port that is most likely not used).  For me, I put +clientport 27008.  Then I forwarded these ports to the appropriate computers and bam:  No more random parse error disconnects.

Noooo don't do that. They'll want money to run their tests. If you want to check for packet loss, just go to a command line and type 'ping yahoo.com -t' and let that run for 5 mins or so. Then hit ctrl+c and get the results, it'll tell you what % packet loss you're getting. (anything more than 1 - 2 % is bad... I'm getting anywhere from 4 - 9 % lately, and my game is crapped up like crazy)

about your packet loss bob, i was wondering if maybe you got a trojan or spyware sucking up bandwidth? i know i had ping problems, and hat had happened was i got some silly piece of MS code.. from some update.. and it was constantly trying to talk to MS to get an update, a line of communication that i denied, and would result in NASTY lag spikes.

Post by: BobTheJanitor on August 19, 2004, 11:32:33 AM
Actually, it's probably not me at all. Happens on all the computers in this area. Cox recently updated their line speeds, and they're updating software on their end. Everyone in the general area is having the same packet loss problems. Most of them probably don't notice, though, as packet loss while browsing just means a page takes another second to load. Instead for me it means horrible bloody death.  :(

just thought i'd not that bob's bloody death is my normal playing "skill". :( *runs for the cc*

Yeah I've even tried running for the CC a time or two, where lag doesn't hurt as badly. I end up with my usual CC curse -- marines that can't hit the broadside of an onos and won't go to a single waypoint. Hooray!

open up your browser and type in 192.168.1.1

a password prompt will come up.  Leave username blank, type in 'admin' (without the '') as the password.

After the screen loads, go to advanced

goto forwarding

Open up steam, goto play games, right click on whatever game you'll be playing, click on "Create Desktop Shortcut".

At the end of the target line add "+clientport [porthere]" replace [porthere] with the port. in the example i used 27006.

click okay.  goto start>run  type in cmd

in the prompt, type in "ipconfig" and take note of the ip address.  This isn't your real ip address, its the ip address assigned to you by the router.  take note of it.

go back to the port forwarding, and forward the port to that ip address.
the port I used was 27006 and my DHCP ip address assigned to me by the router was 192.168.1.100 so it would look something like this:

for your brothers computers use different +clientport [porthere], then forward that port to thier computers.  For example, my brother has the ip 192.168.1.101, and for him i set +clientport 27007.  So i would forward port 27007 to 192.168.1.101 via the port forwarding section of the router.
