I don't remember when it started, but a while back, we wished someone a happy birthday with a magical squggle, and ever since then, it's been trademark of a birthday and/or good luck. The "~" or "magic squiggle" as it is known to the learned, is a traditional symbol used in ancient pagan rites. Archeopaganologists are in disagreement on it's actual meaning, but it is usually interpreted to mean either (roughly translated) "Happy Birthday"* or "Postcount ++"**
* lit: May the blood of virgins rain down upon the day of your whelping.
** lit: May my number of posts one day equal the size of bob's massive e-llama.
