Title: Argh Voicespam!
Post by: lolfighter on July 27, 2004, 05:31:26 AM
We all know the situation: You're crouching in a corner somewhere, getting your ninja on. You hear the faint *pitterpatter* of an approaching Skulk, and strain your ears to pinpoint the direction. And then it happens:

"OMG CORNMANDER I NEED SOME TURRENTS AND A SHIRTGUN!!"

As your hearing gradually recovers from the verbal assault, you remember with a start that there is a Skulk nearby. You strain your hearing once more, but the sound is gone. But then, in a horrible moment of realization, you turn around. The last thing you see before the screen goes black is the hideous gaping jaws of the Skulk as it bears down on you. Killed by a mic-screaming nub again...

This is a common problem for people like me, who play with a good set of earphones and use sound to their advantage. But what can you do? Communication is necessary in teamplay games like NS. Spam is not allowed on our server, and you're welcome to alert an admin if anybody is spamming the mic with non-game-related chatter. But sometimes, even the necessary communication will come at the most inopportune moment, blanking out your hearing and making you deaf to your surroundings. This is death if there's a skulk approaching from behind. And you can't very well scream at people to shut up when they're trying to coordinate, can you?

lolfighter to the rescue! I present a simple set of aliases that will get you out of the pinch:

alias voicet "voiceoff"
alias voiceoff "voice_scale 0.05; stopsound; developer 1; echo Voice Off; developer 0; alias voicet voiceon"
alias voiceon "voice_scale 0.30; stopsound; developer 1; echo Voice On; developer 0; alias voicet voiceoff"

Simply bind a key to voicet and you're set. Hitting this key will tone down the volume of all voicechat drastically, hitting it again will return the volume to normal levels. If you want all voice completely muted, adjust the voice_scale in the alias voiceoff to "0". And remember to set the voice_scale in the alias voiceon to what your normal voice_scale is. Although I haven't tried it myself, I imagine you could also replace the voice_scale commands with the command to turn voicecomm on and off completely.

Please note that I haven't been able to verify whether these work in conjunction with mp_blockscripts.
(A little edit: It works fine with blockscripts.)

It may not be perfect, but it beats being deaf. And if anybody ever screams at you to stfu so they can hear what's going on halfway across the map with their superhearing, simply direct them to this thread.

Disclaimer: I, lolfighter, claim no merit for the aliases presented in this thread. To my regret, I do not remember whence I got them. Should you know the original creator of these aliases, I shall happily give full credit where it is due.

I know the situation too well, and I've been brought down many times because I lose track of where a skulk is just because a couple clanmates suddenly decide they want to chat about how much they "kicked some f***ing ass" in a game two months ago, or the guy that starts throwing a fit because a teammate accidentally shot him while in the fray against other enemies, or anything of the sort. I'll be sure to test this out in my next game.

Yay

Is voice_scale the volume level for voicechat? All of the voicechatting that I hear is fairly quiet and I have to turn up my volume if I want to hear it. This brings loud game sounds (gunshots, jumping, etc.) which are too loud and so I keep the volume lowered.

P.S. This is why I don't respond well to voicecomming :p  Although every once in a while, I'll catch my name being said over voicecomm and I'll ask what was said.

so want about other noise spam...

I was playing yesterday and someone kept continuously "saying"  "Standing by", "I'm in Position", "I've got your six", OVER AND OVER AND OVER - the phrase would have even been over and he'd cut it off with a new one.  it was soooooo freaking annoying.

Anything to help that??

Having witnessed Mr. Bill's voicespam firsthand, the only thing I can reccomend is... JOIN IN!

Seriously though, beyond those few times where it seems to be fun, I know its really annoying.  A few of us (me, Bill, Cheez) went steady on for a map or so today.  But of course, we're good enough to shut up if you say so.

Now of course some people don't know when to shut up, and that's what mute is for...

i HATE ppl who spam requests, because i actually click on those dang things. and i HATE CLICKING ON 8 QUEUED UP FREAKING REQUESTS!! it slows me down, and might kill your teammate across the map who is number 7 in asking for a medpack

addition to lolfighters scripts

Code: [Select]
alias voicet "voiceoff"
alias voiceoff "voice_scale 0.05; stopsound; developer 1; echo Voice Off; developer 0; hud_saytext 0; alias voicet voiceon"
alias voiceon "voice_scale 0.30; stopsound; developer 1; echo Voice On; developer 0; hud_saytext 1; alias voicet voiceoff""

that should turn off chat for chatspammers as well as voice

aslo hud_saytext_time changes the amount of time chat text is displayed

note: all of this is from memory, so don't shout at me if it doesn't work

You couldn`t play properly for laughing too much. Then  he drops 5 ccs all over the map. I end up building one and an ip in sewer hive thinking we have got away with it, turn around to build the 2nd and stare right at a lerk just sat there watching me!!! Think it was Ness but he decided to let me finish before killing me

Title: Argh Voicespam!
Post by: BobTheJanitor on September 19, 2004, 12:55:27 AM
This works fine even with blockscripts, because it does not use any + commands and does not attempt to repeat anything. And the aliases help too, although I haven't quite figured out how that works exactly. Anyway, I use a script about the same as this whenever I pub on almost any server that isn't LM. Very helpful. Unless you like listening to CS rejects argue over which of them is the bigger nub.

Disclaimer:  In no way do I mean to harass any females that I have played with on NS.  No I am not a pervert.  I also do not mean to imply that any females that I have played with smell good.  They could in fact stink.  I am not a wierdo.  At least I don't whisper all the time like 2_8 or shout constantly like Nooblet.   :D

voice spam is becoming very irritating on the server.  I had to mute my entire team on one round earlier tonite, which I know is not a good thing, but I couldn't hear anything over all the "useless chatter" anyway.

RULE #10... it seems this is a rule that really isn't enforced as much as the others.  should be though.

You're right, I have no sense of humor.  When someone is trying to say something important and gets cut off by a spammer... or when I'm trying to figure out which angle the one skulk is coming from who's going to eat me, and someone won't SHUT UP... it's annoying.  There's a difference between random chatter in a 'fun' game vs a normal game - and MOST of the games on LM I would define as normal.

Ranger, do you WANT a 'dis'-honerable mention?  Does annoying people sound like a fun idea to you?  gah!   *dies*

I've posted myopnion about this before. But I'll say it again. When the game has yet to be decided (first 5 minutes or so), voice comm is a very PRECIOUS commodity. It's for Hoot.. i mean the Comm to spa.. uh.. USE wisely.

When the game is decided (i.e. rines have 1 node, they have 2 fades, most of the nodes, 2 hives and just crushiing us, I don't care how much you Ranger it up.

I understand that there is a certain level of camaraderie (<--Spelling?)  on this server, where most people play the game with eachother every night and get along well with eachother.  but it can get to be too much, to the point last night where someone said "we're team voicespam" and it seemed that everyone was breaking rule #10 on purpose.  I wanted to switch teams since it was 8 vs 7, but I didn't coz that is against the rules as well, as the teams weren't really uneven.

as for having a sense of humor... say something funny.  most of the time voice spam is stuff like "I went in data core, and there were a bunch of rines, and i said OMG I'm going to die, and then I died."  instead of just saying "rines in data core."

I was never great, and outright SUCKED at b5, but I seem to be doing quite well in b6. Not that I really care about the scoreboard. If I feel that I have been useful to my team, what do I care about the scoreboard?
On aliens, my greatest skill is looking out for marine activity and bossing the aliens around to where the action is. "Field Commander" if you will. I believe I can really make a difference that way, but the scoreboard doesn't track that.

Scoreboard measures individual skill, not in any way tied to your team. You may be 40:0, and still lose as a team - or you might be 0:20 and win as a team.
I usually end up being on the top or close to the top of the scoreboard as Alien, and near the bottom as Marine.

Although usually if a guy has a 40:0 ratio, it'll help the team quite a bit, and they should be winning if the rest of the players are any decent at all.

only you man....
I've played with ranger for a long time, and he does spam a lot. but most of the time, if you actually listen to it, hes useful. He knows the names of the map areas and when he whines about an onos eating him in _______________, you can use that to know "ok, theres an onos in this area, probably going to ___________". and when he does spam unnecessarily, just admin_slap him, that usually helps  >:D
I dont use my mic because its all jacked up for some reason and cuts out everyone elses sound when i talk on it. Have yet to figure that one out.
as for the whole b5/3.0 thing, i have ALWAYS sucked scorewise. But the reason is that im a better support player than an offensive player. I always gorge at the beginning of the map and drop rts or chambers on aliens, and always haul ass to res nodes to build em as rines. Plus im fairly good at being a hive ninja if you watch me and are quick with a pg drop. My skill lies in the backfield. You'll usually tab up the scores and see that i'm close to the top with relatively few kills on aliens. I do like the new version a hell of a lot better than b5 though...b5 was garbage.

TBH Ranger, last few times I've played with you I've noticed you being more quiet.  One time though you made me laugh - you 'said' something useless and then immediately typed something very important for our team to know. lollers

but muting someone makes you not see their text either, doesn't it?

Yeah, you won't see the person's text either which is kind of bad since they might type something important since they use the mic to just talk about ****.

there should be a way to ONLY mute someone's mic, still being able to read their text.

That's called "muting".. and apparently doing that mutes that person's text as well. (The point of muting is to not hear/see what spammers/ignorant people are saying.)

This script works great except when you turn it back on it resets the voice receive volume to low, i usually max it out so i hafta move it back up manually :(

is there a way around this?

Put it into the script, as part of the second command for restoring. It should be voice_something, like voice_receive_volume or whatever. Type voice in console, and you'll see lots of commands - scroll through them, they're pretty clearly labelled.

voice_overdrive
The higher it is, the softer the background becomes while voice is activated. Mine's 2, set to 5 if you like voices of teammates more than footsteps of the enemy :)
