so now i was hoping some one would have a nice desktop version of lunix for me to play with when i leave broad band land soon.
things it needs to have:
1.some form of internet connection sharing, for the future.
2.overhwlming sweetness
3. no need to write code every day im feeling lazy this summer.

First off, do not use Redhat, Mandrake, Lycoris, or Lindows. Granted, they're easy to set up, but in the long run you're not using linux. They're too weird and proprietary, too different from a true linux OS.
I've heard good things about Gentoo, but haven't had a chance to use it as it doesn't like my onboard RAID controller (arg die). I've used CRUX and it's hard. I've used Debian and it's manageable but still difficult. What I would recommend is Slackware (http://www.slackware.com).
Slackware is not extremely easy to set up; that is, you'll need to read some instructions as you're doing it. But it does have an installer system and tips to help you along the way. It ships with a large number of software packages; you'll likely be happy with what it has, but if not, you can install anything from either pre-compiled Slackware packages (not common, but they're around) or just install it from source yourself, which is about as difficult as using IRC. In other words, it's only hard if you have typing-phobia.
As for coding, well, Slackware certainly comes with all the resources for you if you should need to write some programs, but you are by no means required to do so. I'm no coder. I know some python, I can tell what a bash script does by reading it, and the best C program I ever wrote was a number guessing game. And I've customized (http://208.35.225.137/jrhodes/desktop.jpg) the hell out of my Slackware system. (The desktop environment pictured in that screenshot is Enlightenment, which is so malleable that it's the Winamp of linux window managers. Slackware ships with several window managers, including GNOME and KDE, both of which mimic a windows style, with menu bars and desktop icons.)
Slackware's most recent version is 9.1 and the ISO images can be acquired from here (http://linuxiso.org/distro.php?distro=17).
If you have any questions, I'm constantly in the IRC channel. Just ask.

gah, a linux acolyte!! RUN!!
imho, mandrake or knoppix will do you fine.
-
Niteowl, Knoppix is a bootable distribution. It's not meant for everyday use, and while it can be done, the darn thing doesn't even come with proper tools for installing anything other than prebuilt binary packages. Knoppix is simply meant to be "omg look at linux isn't it cool and not scary" to newbies.
And as for Mandrake, yeah, it's the least retarded of the "easy" distributions, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

yeah, i know, that's why i recommended it, didn't he want just to get a flavour of it?
if he really wants to get into linux, then i'd recommend debian. automagically updating packages over the intarwebness is kewl.
-
yeah, but im about to go back to 56k land:) also i am running a raid right now as well.
i guess ill try slack ware, mebe, debian. see which one i like more. the mandrake one is pron i tell you:)
EDIT: AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!
ok im downloading slack ware. even as i speak!

Make sure whatever it is supports WINE.. if you want to run any windows games
Damn we need a version of steam for linux
-
Slackware supports WINE, and I got steam running on it kinda.
That is, it started up and it updated all the platform files and such, but since WINE lacks a proper system tray, it promptly disappeared from sight, and I could not test it to see if it would let me play any games.
And yes, you can boot from CD.
