I think the CPU fan on my laptop broke, so I won't be playing any games/be on for a while.
I would open it up but it's a laptop and chances are I'll just lose a few pieces and never ever be able to rebuild it.

Hello Nick,
Thank you for your reply.
Nick, I really appreciate your time and efforts. I apologize that your
issue has not been fixed.
Your computer needs to come in for out of warranty service to be
repaired. I will need the following information from you in order to
get this process started:
1. Gateway Customer ID.
2. Original order number.
3. Original serial number (usually, it's on the bottom of the computer
on a white sticker containing a bar code. Normally it will start with a
zero or possibly three zeros, but has no letters in it).
4. Your complete contact name and shipping address to return the
computer to you upon completion of the service work.
5. Please provide the system passwords (if any) for the computer.
6. It may be necessary to format the hard drive to resolve the issue.
May we do that if needed without first contacting you?
In order to fulfill the out of warranty service, I will need for you to
provide a method of payment. For your protection, Gateway no longer
accepts credit card numbers via e-mail. Instead, we have a secured site
where this information can be entered. This information will only be
accessible to Gateway, for the purposes of placing this specific order.
The information will then be purged within 24 hours for your protection.
Please click on the Internet address below to begin this process:
https://support.gateway.com/support/contact...&cusid=28621468 (https://support.gateway.com/support/contact/contact_ccinfo.asp?srn=2-1581966257&cusid=28621468)
If the Service Request Number and Customer ID are not automatically
filled in, please enter them manually. Your Service Request Number is
2-1581966257 and your Customer ID is 28621468.
The approximate charge involved in the service is $299.00. This charge
may vary if any additional components need to be replaced or any
undisclosed information is found. The Gateway limited warranty covers
defects in materials and workmanship for the specified timeframe and
does not cover damages caused by misuse, accidents, and other external
causes. Upon receipt at the service facility, your system will be
evaluated for physical damage. If it is determined that the system has
sustained non-disclosed damage and the system is not covered by
Gateway's Accidental Damage or LCD Replacement Coverage, a service
representative will contact you with an estimate for the associated
repair. If found that the estimated cost were more than the actual cost
involved in the repair, then we would credit that balance amount to your
account.
NOTE: This price does not include any applicable taxes that may be
incurred.
Fill out the form as well as you can with your information. Once your
information has been submitted, please respond to this message. At that
time, I will place the order for you. I will then e-mail you back with
your order number.
In addition, Gateway will send you packaging to use to ship your system
to our service facility. The box should arrive within 1 to 2 business
days
I have documented this correspondence in Service Request Number
2-1581966257 in our contact tracking database. Please use this number
in the future if you need to contact us again regarding this issue.
Please reply to this message if you require further assistance with this
issue.
Thank you.

I'll let you skim over that.

wow $299.00 just as a estimate to fix it
-
If the hard drive's easy to remove, I'd pull it out before sending it in. Gateway's format happy, I know, I used to work phone support for them. Unless you don't care about what's on the drive, I'd pull it.
-
Hehfay, where do you live? If it's somewhere reachable from here, I'll fix it for $100
-
Note to you: Never buy anything gateway again ;), I havent met a single person who had a good experience with anything gateway related olo..... cept for the monitor I have which I got for free from a friend of my bros......

What do you mean format happy? My A+ cert teacher gave me a spare fan he had today, I'm thinking about opening it up and taking a look. I would have done it already were it a reguler computer but I don't want to mess around with laptops.
Should I open it up and try to install this fan y/n
-
he means that if you send them the computer with the hard drive in it, they'll likely format it...
as for trying to replace the fan yourself: I'd say go for it, since there's no warranty to void at this point you have nothing to lose...
-
Yeh if it's already out of warranty I wouldn't be too worried. Laptops aren't terribly hard to work on, they're just tiny. Most likely your CPU fan access will be under the keyboard. First look for nice easy ways to pull the keyboard off, might just have tabs holding it in place (some do, if you're REALLY lucky). If not, start taking out every screw you see (probably all from the bottom). If you think it likely that you'll forget where they go, either write it down or draw yourself a diagram or something. I wouldn't worry too much about them. Almost every laptop I work on I end up with an extra screw or two. As long as you can pick it up and shake it without bits shooting off, you're fine.
Once you get into it and see where the fan is, pull that puppy out and slap the new one in in the same manner. This is where screws might be more important. Usually the heatsink is held down by screws, so make sure you put it back down snug. Not so tight as to snap the CPU into bits (seen that happen once, I lol'ed) but enough that it's got a firm hold on it. Err on the side of tightness. Then just reverse the process of taking it apart, and try it out. If anything breaks or catches on fire, blame BM.
Oh also most laptop components are hooked up by tiny ribbon cables. They usually use little connectors that have a part that slides out to unlock the cable and slides back into place to lock it down. It's pretty simple when you see it. So you can avoid snapping your keyboard or touchpad cable in half when you get to that point. But don't worry, the little ribbon cables are quite tough. I haven't snapped one yet.
GOOD LUCK TO YOU SIR!

Before you do that, google for something like "Direct Fan Control"
I have a program for my dell laptop that gives me direct control of the fan, because the bios doesnt bo much with the fan

about that...
I tried to open it up, couldn't get it open (I pulled out EVERY screw in the bottom, still couldn't get the keyboard off) and now it won't turn on.
I will look for the tabs, though
Edit: No tabs. I think it's a 550s (it's something in the 500s.) Any help would be appreciated Bob D:

You did take the battery out before you started... right?
Take any Floppy/Hard/Disk drives out, they may be holding it together
-
and this thread is living proof of why laptops != fun
but I have confidence in your abilities to remedy the situation in due time.
hell, you should be thankfull you even have your own computer

Yes of course. It was being held together right in the middle of the thing, I could get the sides open but not the middle for some reason...

Seems like everybody's computers are breaking lately :(
I'm just about to drop 400 on a new processor/mobo/power supply (fancy that - all three apparently went out at the same time).
So yeah....*cry*
<edit> :( </edit>

About what gateway wants you to pay, something like that happened to me. The latch that keeps my screen shut broke off and they wanted something like $190 to replace this tiny piece of plastic.
