Umm.. ok, yeah. How do I get IRC and spam my coolness in the LM channel? :huh:

First, download the client you want - mIRC is the most functional, basic (but at the same time powerful one), as well as being the most well-known and popular. Instructions are included :)
HydraIRC is nice because it looks purdy. Other than that, there isn't much i can see that separates it from mIRC. But that's just because I too, am an IRC nublin :) Hydra (the client I personally use) also comes with instructions.
Now second, you'll need to register and Auth with GameSurge (http://www.gamesurge.net/). Just look in the "Account registration" section linked in the yop right corner.

umm....
all I see are GamesNET servers... no GameSurge...
I registered an account on GameSurge and I got a pword in my eMail, but I need to be connected to the gamesurge server before I use the authserv cmd

Hydra hasn't been updated yet, just type /server irc.gamesurge.net in the window that shows up first.

you apparently need to custom-add the gamesurge servers to your server list :)
To be honest, I think I'm too tired to remember how at the moment :-p Ask Dev/null - he's basically my IRC guru :)
Conversely, you could wait until tomorrow when I get my sh*t together if you can wait that long :)

sweet! i'm in the LM room, now how do I set it up so I authserv and join #lunixmonster everytime I connect to GameSurge?

i don't know much about hydra but you put this in your perform or whatever hydra has
/authserv auth nick pword
/join #lunixmonster

That's the one reason why I prefer mIRC over HydraIRC without ever having tried Hydra: Most people use mIRC, so it's easier to get help for it.

For hydra, you have to go to Options/Preferences/Command Profile and set it up there.
Unfortunately after the switch to gamesurge, I can't get it for the LIFE of me to automatically auth and join what rooms I want. 'Twas a beautiful thing before the switchover :(

I got my help from devnull, so here goes.
Go to preferences
Command profiles
Make a new profile called "OnStartup"
In that profile, type "/server irc.gamesurge.net
Make another profile called "irc.gamesurge.net_OnLoggedIn
In that profile, type this stuff
/msg AuthServ@Services.GameSurge.net AUTH [Your account] [Your password]
/join #lunixmonster
(I also have /join #naturalselection , but thats just me)
Delete all the other profiles there for good measure
You should be set.

I guess I had the "/msg AuthServ@Services.GameSurge.net AUTH [Your account] [Your password]" wrong - I just had "/authserv auth [acct name] [password] before and it worked like a charm with gamesnet!
But that's hellaciously awesome. I can be lazy once again!

Note that since this seems to be your first time on IRC, you have to actually register an authserv account before you can auth to it. Next time you join, type "/msg AuthServ help register" and follow the instructions.
