Title: Enhancing Ns
Post by: rad4Christ on April 01, 2004, 02:59:14 PM
This was posted over on CoFR by Draco (don't want to steal the credit, but these packs are nice. Try them.

Detailed textures:
Summary:
This pack was made by Soylient Green. There is no direct link talkin about this pack, but the links to other discussion is below. It is constantly updated, so get it every few weeks. Install it, and then type r_detailtextures 1 in console and, voila you are set! I'd recommend using the less bumps textures, but it's up to you!

Get them here: Clickeh (http://hem.bredband.net/congal/temp/DetTex_pack.zip)
Read About Them here: Clickeh (http://www.natural-selection.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=62384))

Ambience Pack
Summary:
Updated 4/22/04 - Replaces default ambience with higher-bitrate, hand-crafted sounds.

What's New in 4.0:
-Finally replaced old 8-bit Half-Life sounds in Hera and Nancy.
-Thoroughly re-edited with new reverb engine: Gverb!
-Properly inserted repeat flags for a few wavs that weren't repeating.
-Increased mp3 bitrate from 96 to 128 for higher fidelity.

Tip: Use the "less bumps" files for a more realistic feel. THe bumpmap texturing is... well... too fake in some areas.

For the detail textures, it's an on or off thing. You type r_detailtextures 1 in the console to turn them on, and r_detailtextures 0 to turn them back off. So if you hate them, put it back at 0 and you'll never see them again.

I was just listening to the ambient sound pack. VERY cool stuff. Only one oddity I've noticed so far. Ambience/thunder2.wav sounds like a jet plane flying by for some reason, instead of thunder. I was rather confused by that... Everything else is quite cool though. Any idea who the author is by chance? I'm interested in the possiblity of using these in a map instead of just using the default ambient noises. (so even people who aren't using these will still get the cool sound effects for that map)

You might check out uranium's map thread for ns_desolate, that uses them after all. Otherwise, why not just try them? They don't overwrite anything, and like I mentioned up there, turning them off is as easy as one console command.

I made something like that a while ago ;)

And if you want custom-models i suggest looking on Thrill2Kill (http://www.thrill2kill.com/) and NSArmsLab (http://www.nsarmslab.com/).
Both of them have a big collection of models.
i suggest looking for a Laser-Pack that puts laser on you Handgun/LMG and the Marines helmet, i love it <3!

On the detailtextures: If you're using any nvidia card gf4 mx and below, they won't work for you. Gf4 ti and up works fine. Most ATI cards seem to work too. Just something about the way valve programmed them in, they don't like slightly older nvidia cards. Time to upgrade!

very cool :> glad I installed these, thanks...

as for the bump textures, I don't know whose idea it was that 'really bumpy' = 'realistic', so I'm using the de-bumped ones too.

also, they only work for NS_ maps and not CO_ maps right?

Go to the zip file and place the files in the "less bumps" folder in your maps folder. lok at the readme in the less bumps folder in the zip for instructions.
