Title: Halflife 2
Post by: Grimm on March 25, 2004, 09:13:06 PM
Now, I know its been a long time since Halflife 2 was first announced, and even I can't help but feel a bit discouraged by its delays. While wandering some sites and such, I came across the half-hour gameplay video that I remember watching what seems to be an eternity ago, and I am still completely amazed and astounded by what I saw. I'd spent so long waiting for Halflife 2 to be released, and spent so much time listening to people rant and rave about how Valve sucks for taking so long, but watching this video again just reminded me the absolute awesomeness of what the game will be.

If its been a while since you've seen that video, or havn't seen it at all, I highly highly recommend going and watching it again, and maybe all of the others for the hell of it. I don't know if you all will be hit the same way as I was, but it sure doesn't hurt to try.

I had them all but deleted them when I thought HL was 'just around the corner' gleefully thinking I wouldn't need them because I'd oh so soon have the actual game itself... silly me ^^;

The E3 demonstration video I think. Yes, it looks sweet, and to say I'm not excited about it would be lying. But I'm not getting my hopes up - it wouldn't be the first time that a hyped game fails due to something the customers never knew before they had already bought and installed the game.

Hafaf, just dont think the AI is going to be better than everything, mainly because everything in the E3 videos were scripted..... Which is why HL2 is taking so long ^______^ kekeke unfinished rush!!

*edit* was to were*

i would ask how you knew it was scripted, but i'll just say that it was a demo. not the real thing, just supposed to look like it

^^

but that kekekek ^________^ unfinished rush was funny

the AI scripting was a reference to the door being kicked open regardless of soldier or not

and hell yeah, the 30 minute E3 video was pretty sweet

He's right, they're all scripted. :/

guys... if you're complaining about 'scripts' then you obviously don't know how the HL2 AI works.

You place scripts on the map and the AI only pulls them off if it fufils the correct conditions.  It's quite possible to play through that map and never have the script go off, it only went off because the player was in the house and the door was blocked =3
Unlike in HL1 where scripts will go off in the manner they were made no matter what the scripts in HL2 are entirely conditional ^^

I think that some of the stuff in E3 was unconditional scripting. Just to show things off. Like where the Strider moved, I'd put money on the Strider walking the same path every time. But things like impaling people would be a conditional script like Gem said. If it detects a person in range, it runs the "Spear The Humans!!!" script and spears the target.

The HL2 team admitted to using scripts saying that the game was not finished, so using scripts was the only way can they can make a demo.

Besides the door being kicked in, when you walk outside(where the demo shows you shoot some trash can thing then alot of things fall killing the aliens)there is some scripting going on there too.

From what I read the walker trying to work out how to get past the bridgey thing, shooting it then before deciding to duck under it was just the normal AI at work =D
